International Equity on Greenhouse Gas Emissions and World Levels: an integrated analysis through distributive welfare indices

Up until now, analyses of the international distribution of pollutant emissions have not paid sufficient attention to the implications that, in terms of social welfare, the combined evolution of the global world average entails. In this context, this paper proposes the use of environmental welfare indices, taken and adapted from the literature on social welfare and inequality, in order to make a comprehensive examination of the international equity factor and the mean factor in this field. The proposed methodology is implemented empirically in order to explore the evolution in distributive-based environmental welfare on a global level for the three main pollutants with greenhouse gas effects: CO2, CH4 and NO, both globally and for selected years during the period of 1990- 2005. The main results found are as follows: firstly, typically, the environmental welfare associated with the overall greenhouse gases decreased significantly over the period, due primarily to the role of CO2; secondly, in contrast, the global welfare associated with CH4 and NO improved; and thirdly, typically, the evolutions can be attributed to a greater extent to the mean component than to the distributive component, although there are exceptions. Parameterization of written signatures based on EFD

In this work we propose a method to quantify written signatures from digitalized images based on the use of Elliptical Fourier Descriptors (EFD). As usually signatures are not represented as a closed contour, and being that a necessary condition in order to apply EFD, we have developed a method that represents the signatures by means of a set of closed contours. One of the advantages of this method is that it can reconstruct the original shape from all the coefficients, or an approximated shape from a reduced set of them finding the appropriate number of EFD coefficients required for preserving the important information in each application. EFD provides accurate frequency information, thus the use of EFD opens many possibilities. The method can be extended to represent other kind of shapes.

ODiSEA: International Registry on Research Data

El artículo revisa los temas principales en la preservación y reuso de los datos de investigación (beneficios, ciclo de vida, proyectos, normativas ) e identifica la falta de un registro mundial de bancos, repositorios y bibliotecas de datos. Expone la creación de una herramienta web que recoja este tipo de depósitos y los clasifique por áreas disciplinares: ODiSEA International Registry on Research Data. Ofrecemos resultados sobre número y tipología temática de este tipo de depósitos a escala mundial. Esta aportación facilita el descubrimiento de nuevos conjuntos de datos cuya recombinación desde una perspectiva multidisciplinar fomentará la innovación y la rentabilidad de la inversión en ciencia.

On cumulant techniques in speech processing

This paper analyzes applications of cumulant analysis in speech processing. A special focus is made on different second-order statistics. A dominant role is played by an integral representation for cumulants by means of integrals involving cyclic products of kernels.

Improving Pitch Tracking Performance in Hard Noise Conditions by a Preprocessing Based on Mathematical Morphology

In this paper we show how a nonlinear preprocessing of speech signal -with high noise- based on morphological filters improves the performance of robust algorithms for pitch tracking (RAPT). This result happens for a very simple morphological filter. More sophisticated ones could even improve such results. Mathematical morphology is widely used in image processing and has a great amount of applications. Almost all its formulations derived in the two-dimensional framework are easily reformulated to be adapted to one-dimensional context

Population ageing and ICT: An exploratory review of technology innovation trough digital applications

The multidimensional process of physical, psychological, and social change produced by population ageing affects not only the quality of life of elderly people but also of our societies. Some dimensions of population ageing grow and expand over time (e.g. knowledge of the world events, or experience in particular situations), while others decline (e.g. reaction time, physical and psychological strength, or other functional abilities like reduced speed and tiredness). Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) can help elderly to overcome possible limitations due to ageing. As a particular case, biometrics can allow the development of new algorithms for early detection of cognitive impairments, by processing continuous speech, handwriting or other challenged abilities. Among all possibilities, digital applications (Apps) for mobile phones or tablets can allow the dissemination of such tools. In this article, after presenting and discussing the process of population ageing and its social implications, we explore how ICTs through different Apps can lead to new solutions for facing this major demographic challenge.

It departs from specific ageing and biometric traits to then focus on behavioural biometric traits like handwriting, speech and gait to finally explore their practical application in health monitoring of elderly.

Rob Kitchin, geógrafo muy activo y prolífico, mantiene una intensa actividad editorial, puesto que dirige colecciones de temas geográficos y forma parte de los comités asesores de varias revistas internacionales de primera línea, entre ellas, Social and Cultural Geography, que se publica bimensualmente desde el año 2000 y de la que es director. Precisamente, en esta revista dedicada a temas relacionados con la geografía cultural y social se halla el origen de este libro, uno de cuyos propósitos iniciales fue desafiar la hegemonía anglosajona que domina el panorama geográfico internacional.
