Tratamiento del carcinoma de labio mediante braquiterapia de alta tasa de dosis

Dado los diferentes métodos terapéuticos para el cáncer de labio, el objetivo del presente estudio es valorar los resultados obtenidos en un grupo prospectivo de 28 pacientes afectos de carcinoma de labio tratados mediante moldes externos de braquiterapia de alta tasa de dosis. Tanto por la remisión completa que ocurrió en todos los casos, la buena tolerancia a la terapia, la ausencia de complicaciones y de recurrencias, la facilidad de empleo de los moldes, la precisión en el posicionamiento de la fuente en la repetición diaria del tratamiento y la seguridad que ofrece en cuanto a radioprotección, concluímos que esta terapéutica probablemente se convierta en la de uso habitual en los próximos años.

Sidelobe elimination for generalized synthetic discriminant functions by a two-filter correlation and subsequent postprocessing of the intensity distributions

One of the most important problems in optical pattern recognition by correlation is the appearance of sidelobes in the correlation plane, which causes false alarms. We present a method that eliminate sidelobes of up to a given height if certain conditions are satisfied. The method can be applied to any generalized synthetic discriminant function filter and is capable of rejecting lateral peaks that are even higher than the central correlation. Satisfactory results were obtained in both computer simulations and optical implementation.

Estudio transdiciplinar de la fosa EE1 de la Cova Colomera (Prepirineo de Lleida): implicaciones domesticas y paleoambientales en el Bronce Antiguo del Noreste de la Peninsula Iberica

El estudio transdisciplinar de la fosa EE1 de la Cova Colomera ha proporcionado un conjunto de datos que aportan importante información sobre las prácticas domésticas y económicas desarrolladas en ella, y sobre las características paleoambientales de esta zona del noreste peninsular en el tránsito III-II milenio cal. AC. Los resultados apuntan a que esta cueva fue ocupada por grupos reducidos, con una economía mixta agropecuaria, que recurrían también a actividades cinegéticas para completar su dieta. En sus cortas estancias en la Cova Colomera, crearon y amortizaron estructuras excavadas en el suelo de la cavidad, como la fosa EE1, bien para almacenar excedentes y después desechar basura, o bien para eliminar residuos de origen doméstico.

Are traffic violators criminals? Searching for answers in experiences of European countries

The connection between road traffic safety and criminal behavior has recently become a topic of interest in the literature, although little emphasis placed on the relationship with road accidents. Evidence worldwide shows that people who commit other offences characteristic of antisocial attitudes, are more prone to suffer road traffic accidents and infringe traffic laws. Here we examine the records of the 28 current member states of the European Union over the period 1999 - 2010. Our aim is to test the hypothesis that crime rates (and specifically, motor vehicle-related crimes) may be considered as predictors of fatal road traffic accidents. If they may, this could justify, at least prima facie, the tendency in several countries to consider traffic offences as crimes in their penal codes and to toughen the punishment imposed on those who commit them. We also analyze the effect of the severity of the legal system applied to traffic offences. Our results reveal that road traffic fatality rates are higher in countries whose inhabitants have more aggressive behavior, while the rates are lower in countries with more severe penal systems.

Usos de un SIG, Sistema de Información Geográfico, en la construcción de una Planimetría Arqueológica para Tarragona (I)

El presente articulo sintetiza los trabajos realizados en el marco del Seminari de Topografía Antiga1 de la Universitat Rovira i Virgili, URV, para construir un SIG que recoja la información arqueológica obtenida en el curso de todas las intervenciones realizadas sobre la ciudad de Tarragona. El artículo se centra en los aspectos referentes a la vectorización de la información planimétrica y topológica.

A digital holography technique for generating beams with arbitrary polarization and shape

A method for generating beams with arbitrary polarization and shape is proposed. Our design requires the use of a Mach-Zehnder set-up combined with translucent liquid crystal displays in each arm of the interferometer; in this way, independent manipulation of each transverse beam components is possible. The target of this communication is to develop a numerical procedure for calculating the holograms required for dynamically encode any amplitude value and polarization state in each point of the wavefront. Several examples demonstrating the capabilities of the method are provided.

On the longitudinal component of paraxial fields

The analysis of paraxial Gaussian beams features in most undergraduate courses in laser physics, advanced optics and photonics. These beams provide a simple model of the field generated in the resonant cavities of lasers, thus constituting a basic element for understanding laser theory. Usually, uniformly polarized beams are considered in the analytical calculations, with the electric field vibrating at normal planes to the propagation direction. However, such paraxial fields do not verify the Maxwell equations. In this paper we discuss how to overcome this apparent contradiction and evaluate the longitudinal component that any paraxial Gaussian beam should exhibit. Despite the fact that the assumption of a purely transverse paraxial field is useful and accurate, the inclusion of the above issue in the program helps students to clarify the importance of the electromagnetic nature of light, thus providing a more complete understanding of the paraxial approach.

Transverse and longitudinal components of the propagating and evanescent waves associated to radially-polarized nonparaxial fields

A comparison is established between the contributions of transverse and longitudinal components of both the propagating and the evanescent waves associated to freely propagating radially polarized nonparaxial beams. Attention is focused on those fields that remain radially polarized upon propagation. In terms of the plane-wave angular spectrum of these fields, analytical expressions are given for determining both the spatial shape of the above components and their relative weight integrated over the whole transverse plane. The results are applied to two kinds of doughnut-like beams with radial polarization, and we compare the behavior of such fields at two transverse planes.

¿Por qué las mujeres con cáncer de mama deben estar guapas y los hombres con cáncer de próstata pueden ir sin afeitar? Oncología, disidencia y cultura hegemónica

El universo oncológico, aparentemente, constituye un ámbito de profundos consensos; aliviar el sufrimiento de pacientes y familias, la búsqueda de una cura efectiva o erradicar el estigma asociado al diagnóstico son objetivos que generan un amplio acuerdo social. Desde una perspectiva cultural, sin embargo, se constata la presencia de ciertas áreas de tensión y disidencia en torno al cáncer. En este artículo, aplicando conceptos analíticos de Gramsci y Foucault, se define en forma de decálogo lugares comunes que como el pensamiento positivo, la feminidad, la prevención o el espíritu de lucha conforman una cultura hegemónica en cáncer de mama enfrentada a los discursos de culturas subalternas como la feminista o ambientalista. Frente a la idea de unidad y consenso, el análisis de la literatura antropológica proporciona una imagen compleja donde la vivencia del cáncer, resignificando la enfermedad como un espacio de conflicto ideológico, es construida en términos de lucha de intereses y proyectos de control social.

Polymorphisms cyclooxygenase-2 -765G>C and interleukin-6 -174G>C are associated with serum inflammation markers in a high cardiovascular risk population and do not modify the response to a Mediterranean diet supplemented with virgin olive oil or nuts

Inflammation is involved in cardiovascular diseases. Some studies have found that the Mediterranean diet (MD) can reduce serum concentrations of inflammation markers. However, none of these studies have analyzed the influence of genetic variability in such a response. Our objective was to study the effect of the -765G.C polymorphism in the cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) gene and the -174G.C polymorphism in the interleukin-6 (IL-6) gene on serum concentrations of IL-6, C-reactive protein, intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 as well as their influence on the response toa nutritional interventionwithMD.An intervention study ina high cardiovascular riskMediterranean population (314 men and 407 women) was undertaken. Participants were randomly assigned to consume a low-fat control diet or a MD supplementedwith virgin olive oil ornuts.Measureswereobtained at baseline and after a 3-mointervention period.At baseline, the COX-2 -765G.C polymorphismwas associated with lower serum IL-6 (5.85 6 4.82 in GG vs. 4.74 6 4.14 ng/L in C-allele carriers; P ¼ 0.002) and ICAM-1 (265.8 6 114.8 in GG vs. 243.0 6 107.1 mg/L in C-carriers; P ¼ 0.018) concentrations. These differences remained significant aftermultivariate adjustment. The IL-6 -174G.C polymorphism was associatedwith higher (CC vs. G-carriers) serumICAM-1concentrations in bothmenandwomenandwithhigherserumIL-6 concentrations inmen.Following the dietary intervention, no significant gene x diet interactions were found. In conclusion, although COX-2 -765G.C and IL-6 -174G.C polymorphismswere associatedwith inflammation, consuming aMD(either supplemented with virgin olive oil or nuts) reduced the concentration of inflammation markers regardless of these polymorphisms.

Recomendaciones para la implementación del artículo 37 Difusión en Acceso Abierto de la Ley de la Ciencia, la Tecnología y la Innovación

La Ley de la Ciencia, la Tecnología y la Innovación, publicada en junio de 20111, recoge en su artículo 37 los principales aspectos a tener en cuenta a la hora de llevar a cabo la difusión en abierto de los resultados de la investigación financiada con fondos públicos y aceptados para su publicación en publicaciones de investigación seriadas o periódicas. Sin embargo, las dudas que han surgido en los diferentes ámbitos de aplicación han motivado la realización de un ejercicio de reflexión que permita ordenar cuáles son los pasos que los diferentes agentes involucrados deberían abordar para un correcto cumplimiento de la normativa legal y facilitar así la adecuada aplicación del artículo sobre “Difusión en acceso abierto”.El objetivo de este documento es contar con una guía práctica que defina los aspectos principales de la política nacional de acceso abierto y despeje el camino a todos los actores afectados, al especificar cuáles son los nuevos roles que habrán de adoptarse y elaborar una serie de recomendaciones destinadas a todos los colectivos implicados en la producción y gestión del mercado de la información científica...
