All of the imputation techniques usually applied for replacing values below thedetection limit in compositional data sets have adverse effects on the variability. In thiswork we propose a modification of the EM algorithm that is applied using the additivelog-ratio transformation. This new strategy is applied to a compositional data set and theresults are compared with the usual imputation techniques

In the eighties, John Aitchison (1986) developed a new methodological approach for the statistical analysis of compositional data. This new methodology was implemented in Basic routines grouped under the name CODA and later NEWCODA inMatlab (Aitchison, 1997). After that, several other authors have published extensions to this methodology: Marín-Fernández and others (2000), Barceló-Vidal and others (2001), Pawlowsky-Glahn and Egozcue (2001, 2002) and Egozcue and others (2003). The log-ratio methodology makes available powerful tools for analyzing compositionaldata. Nevertheless, the use of this methodology is only possible for those data setswithout null values. Consequently, in those data sets where the zeros are present, aprevious treatment becomes necessary. Last advances in the treatment of compositionalzeros have been centered especially in the zeros of structural nature and in the roundedzeros. These tools do not contemplate the particular case of count compositional datasets with null values. In this work we deal with \count zeros" and we introduce atreatment based on a mixed Bayesian-multiplicative estimation. We use the Dirichletprobability distribution as a prior and we estimate the posterior probabilities. Then weapply a multiplicative modi¯cation for the non-zero values. In a seminal paper, Aitchison and Lauder (1985) introduced classical kernel densityestimation techniques in the context of compositional data analysis. Indeed, they gavetwo options for the choice of the kernel to be used in the kernel estimator. One ofthese kernels is based on the use the alr transformation on the simplex SD jointly withthe normal distribution on RD-1. However, these authors themselves recognized thatthis method has some deficiencies. A method for overcoming these dificulties based onrecent developments for compositional data analysis and multivariate kernel estimationtheory, combining the ilr transformation with the use of the normal density with a fullbandwidth matrix, was recently proposed in Martín-Fernández, Chacón and Mateu-Figueras (2006). Here we present an extensive simulation study that compares bothmethods in practice, thus exploring the finite-sample behaviour of both estimators

The quantitative estimation of Sea Surface Temperatures from fossils assemblages is afundamental issue in palaeoclimatic and paleooceanographic investigations. TheModern Analogue Technique, a widely adopted method based on direct comparison offossil assemblages with modern coretop samples, was revised with the aim ofconforming it to compositional data analysis. The new CODAMAT method wasdeveloped by adopting the Aitchison metric as distance measure. Modern coretopdatasets are characterised by a large amount of zeros. The zero replacement was carriedout by adopting a Bayesian approach to the zero replacement, based on a posteriorestimation of the parameter of the multinomial distribution. The number of modernanalogues from which reconstructing the SST was determined by means of a multipleapproach by considering the Proxies correlation matrix, Standardized Residual Sum ofSquares and Mean Squared Distance. És conegut que arreu del món hi ha moltes poblacions aïllades que encara viuen a partir de l’agricultura i la ramaderia de subsistència i que utilitzen tots aquells recursos del seu entorn per tal de cobrir les serves necessitats bàsiques. Aquest ús acostuma a ser insostenible, fent que l’entorn tendeixi a degradar-se cada cop més. El projecte representa una peça bàsica en la inserció del desenvolupament sostenible per a moltes d’aquestes poblacions, com és el cas de les comunes el riu Lules (Tucumán, Argentina). Basat en entrevistes i enquestes als pobladors, es fa una anàlisi estadística per determinar l’ús i la percepció de canvi que tenen els habitants, i a la vegada, es relaciona amb altres variables com el nivell socioeconòmic i l’edat, entre d’altres. Aquesta anàlisi juntament amb l’observació directa, permet fer una diagnosi de l’àrea i, conseqüentment, una llista de propostes (i desenvolupament de les més urgents) per tal de crear un pla de gestió de la zona i poder assegurar el seu desenvolupament sostenible

A graphical processing unit (GPU) is a hardware device normally used to manipulate computer memory for the display of images. GPU computing is the practice of using a GPU device for scientific or general purpose computations that are not necessarily related to the display of images. Many problems in econometrics have a structure that allows for successful use of GPU computing. We explore two examples. The first is simple: repeated evaluation of a likelihood function at different parameter values. The second is a more complicated estimator that involves simulation and nonparametric fitting. We find speedups from 1.5 up to 55.4 times, compared to computations done on a single CPU core. These speedups can be obtained with very little expense, energy consumption, and time dedicated to system maintenance, compared to equivalent performance solutions using CPUs. Code for the examples is provided.

In Catalonia, according to the nitrate directive (91/676/EU), nine areas have been declared as vulnerable to nitrate pollution from agricultural sources (Decret 283/1998 and Decret 479/2004). Five of these areas have been studied coupling hydro chemical data with a multi-isotopic approach (Vitòria et al. 2005, Otero et al. 2007, Puig et al. 2007), in an ongoing research project looking for an integrated application of classical hydrochemistry data, with a comprehensive isotopic characterisation (δ15N and δ18O of dissolved nitrate, δ34S and δ18O of dissolved sulphate, δ13C of dissolved inorganic carbon, and δD and δ18O of water). Within this general frame, the contribution presented explores compositional ways of: (i) distinguish agrochemicals and manure N pollution, (ii) quantify natural attenuation of nitrate (denitrification), and identify possible controlling factors.To achieve this two-fold goal, the following techniques have been used. Separate biplots of each suite of data show that each studied region has a distinct δ34S and pH signatures, but they are homogeneous with regard to NO3- related variables. Also, the geochemical variables were projected onto the compositional directions associated with the possible denitrification reactions in each region. The resulting balances can be plot together with some isotopes, to assess their likelihood of occurrence

One of the tantalising remaining problems in compositional data analysis lies in how to deal with data sets in which there are components which are essential zeros. By anessential zero we mean a component which is truly zero, not something recorded as zero simply because the experimental design or the measuring instrument has not been sufficiently sensitive to detect a trace of the part. Such essential zeros occur inmany compositional situations, such as household budget patterns, time budgets,palaeontological zonation studies, ecological abundance studies. Devices such as nonzero replacement and amalgamation are almost invariably ad hoc and unsuccessful insuch situations. From consideration of such examples it seems sensible to build up amodel in two stages, the first determining where the zeros will occur and the secondhow the unit available is distributed among the non-zero parts. In this paper we suggest two such models, an independent binomial conditional logistic normal model and a hierarchical dependent binomial conditional logistic normal model. The compositional data in such modelling consist of an incidence matrix and a conditional compositional matrix. Interesting statistical problems arise, such as the question of estimability of parameters, the nature of the computational process for the estimation of both the incidence and compositional parameters caused by the complexity of the subcompositional structure, the formation of meaningful hypotheses, and the devising of suitable testing methodology within a lattice of such essential zero-compositional hypotheses. The application of Discriminant function analysis (DFA) is not a new idea in the studyof tephrochrology. In this paper, DFA is applied to compositional datasets of twodifferent types of tephras from Mountain Ruapehu in New Zealand and MountainRainier in USA. The canonical variables from the analysis are further investigated witha statistical methodology of change-point problems in order to gain a betterunderstanding of the change in compositional pattern over time. Finally, a special caseof segmented regression has been proposed to model both the time of change and thechange in pattern. This model can be used to estimate the age for the unknown tephrasusing Bayesian statistical calibration

Several eco-toxicological studies have shown that insectivorous mammals, due to theirfeeding habits, easily accumulate high amounts of pollutants in relation to other mammal species. To assess the bio-accumulation levels of toxic metals and their in°uenceon essential metals, we quantified the concentration of 19 elements (Ca, K, Fe, B, P,S, Na, Al, Zn, Ba, Rb, Sr, Cu, Mn, Hg, Cd, Mo, Cr and Pb) in bones of 105 greaterwhite-toothed shrews (Crocidura russula) from a polluted (Ebro Delta) and a control(Medas Islands) area. Since chemical contents of a bio-indicator are mainly compositional data, conventional statistical analyses currently used in eco-toxicology can givemisleading results. Therefore, to improve the interpretation of the data obtained, weused statistical techniques for compositional data analysis to define groups of metalsand to evaluate the relationships between them, from an inter-population viewpoint.Hypothesis testing on the adequate balance-coordinates allow us to confirm intuitionbased hypothesis and some previous results. The main statistical goal was to test equalmeans of balance-coordinates for the two defined populations. After checking normality,one-way ANOVA or Mann-Whitney tests were carried out for the inter-group balances

The paper discusses maintenance challenges of organisations with a huge number of devices and proposes the use of probabilistic models to assist monitoring and maintenance planning. The proposal assumes connectivity of instruments to report relevant features for monitoring. Also, the existence of enough historical registers with diagnosed breakdowns is required to make probabilistic models reliable and useful for predictive maintenance strategies based on them. Regular Markov models based on estimated failure and repair rates are proposed to calculate the availability of the instruments and Dynamic Bayesian Networks are proposed to model cause-effect relationships to trigger predictive maintenance services based on the influence between observed features and previously documented diagnostics

La mediació en l‘àmbit penal del menor és un mitjà innovador de resolució de conflictes, que s’ha de promoure per les seves innegables avantatges envers el model de punició tradicional. Permet que tots el agents afectats puguin intervenir i apropa la justícia a la societat, tot donant un paper fonamental a la víctima i afavorint-hi les possibilitats resocialitzadores i educatives del menor infractor. L’objectiu principal ha de ser facilitar al menor, que tot just comença la seva carrera criminal, les eines necessàries per evitar-ne l’evolució com a adult delinqüent, amb el consegüent benefici per a tota la societat. Igualment, la víctima, gran oblidada del procés penal, adquireix un nou protagonisme per decidir l‘abast de la seva reparació i, alhora, la societat reforça els mecanismes per obtenir la pau social. Aquestes finalitats tan loables mereixen l’esforç de les institucions per invertir en mitjans personals i materials que garanteixin l’eficàcia i la viabilitat dels programes de mediació i reparació. L’experiència a Catalunya, comunitat pionera en aquest àmbit, ve avalada per uns resultats excel·lents en el camp de la jurisdicció dels menors, segons reconeixen els mateixos protagonistes. Els resultats favorables de la mediació en l’àmbit del menor han permès, fins i tot, iniciar la primera experiència a l’Estat pel que fa a la mediació en la justícia penal d’adults. S’obren, doncs, noves possibilitats dins la filosofia del dret penal que ens permetran assolir en el futur solucions innovadores, proposades per les persones directament afectades. Aquest ha estat l’objectiu del nostre estudi, tot mirant d’aprofundir els avantatges de la mediació envers al sistema punitiu tradicional i els resultats de la seva implantació a Catalunya, així com cercar solucions que alleugeressin la sempre sobrecarregada Administració de justícia.

L’estudi es proposa saber si hi ha factors individuals dels infants i adolescents, factors familiars i/o de l’entorn que incideixen en el temps d’estada d’un infant o adolescent en un CRAE. L’estudi també es proposa analitzar els factors institucionals per saber si aquests poden explicar el temps d’estada dels menors en un centre. La mostra, extreta de la base de dades de la Direcció General de la Infància i l’Adolescència, és de 350 individus, amb un internament mitjà de 491 dies, que s’incrementa per cada any d’edat de l’infant en 47 dies. Els resultats mostren que no hi ha un sol factor determinant que incideixi en el temps d’internament, sinó que són una combinació: l’edat del menor, el motiu d’ingrés, les activitats d’alt risc i els conflictes relacionals de risc entre els progenitors, la freqüència de la relació familiar, les característiques personals de l’infant i el tipus i nivell d’integració d’aquest en el centre. La tipologia i les característiques de cada CRAE influeixen en el temps d’estada en un centre (si és exclusivament per a nois disminueix l’estada, mentre que, si és religiós, l’estada s’allarga), però no en les mesures d’èxit pel que fa al desinternament i definides en la recerca, que són homogènies en tots els tipus de centres.

Les rogues de disseny són utilitzades hores d’ara amb major intensitat encara que no suposen un problema tan greu, a nivell assistencial o clínic, com les drogues més clàssiques. La seva prevalença no ha estat molt estudiada des del punt de vista legal i la seva implicació en procediments civils o penals no és ben coneguda. La recerca pretén obtenir dades del consum de drogues de disseny, avaluar la seva associació amb dades sociodemogràfiques, mèdiques i amb els delictes comesos per la població d’estudi, valorar aspectes forenses, intoxicació i morts degudes al seu consum, revisar sentències i repercussió als àmbits civil i penal en relació amb aquestes drogues, a través de l’estudi d’una mostra de 175 subjectes que es troben detinguts al Jutjat de Guàrdia de Barcelona i de subjectes interns al Centre Penitenciari de Joves de Barcelona.
