Estudio de la accesibilidad de los documentos cientificos en soporte digital

Resumen: El artículo analiza los problemas de accesibilidad que actualmente presentan los artículos científicos en soporte digital. El estudio se centra en los aspectos de facilidad de uso del contenido de los documentos digitales según la forma en que se publiquen, sin entrar en el estudio de los distintos sistemas de recuperación. Se analizan los dos formatos más utilizados para la publicación de artículos científicos en soporte digital: HTML y PDF, estudiando el desempeño lector en relación a la presencia de sumarios o de tablas internas o vinculadas. El estudio se ha realizado con dos colectivos: 30 sujetos ciegos, usuarios de Jaws, contactados gracias a la mediación de la Fundación ONCE, y 30 sujetos no ciegos, profesores del Departamento de Biblioteconomía y Documentación de la Universidad de Barcelona. El estudio muestra que la localización de los datos contenidos en tablas se ve facilitada en documentos HTML por la inclusión de un sumario que vincule con la tabla, así como la inclusión de tablas completas en el cuerpo del documento HTML facilita la actividad lectora por parte de los usuarios ciegos. A nivel metodológico la presente investigación aporta dos novedades relevantes respecto a la literatura existente en los estudios de usabilidad con ciegos: estudia la usabilidad del formato PDF y es un test de usabilidad cuantitativo; este último hecho dificulta su comparación con la mayoría de artículos publicados. Abstract: This paper analyses the problems of accessibility posed by scientific articles published in digital format, focusing on the ease of use of their content with respect to the form in which they are published (irrespective of the recovery system). The two most widely used formats for the publication of scientific articles in digital format, HTML and PDF, are analysed, examining reader performance in relation to the presence of contents lists or internal or linked tables. The study involved two groups: 30 blind subjects, all JAWS users, contacted through the ONCE Foundation, and 30 sighted subjects, lecturers in the Department of Librarianship and Documentation of the University of Barcelona. The results shows the location of data in tables is easier in HTML documents through the inclusion of a contents list linked to these tables. Further, the inclusion of complete tables in the body of HTML document facilitates the reading activity of blind users. At the methodological level, this work reports two novelties with respect to the existing literature on usability by blind people: it examines the usability of the PDF format, and discusses a quantitative usability test. The latter hinders comparison with the majority of published articles.

L'administració electrònica i la gestió de documents

The projects dealing with e-government are currently the principal factor in instigating the changes taking place within the public administration. This change, which is considered unstoppable, has important implications regarding the management and conservation of administrative documents generated by electronic transactions. This article analyses the methodological, legal and cultural challenges that come about when the archives paradigm is included within e-government projects and also the consequences that this may have on the archives themselves. In conclusion the author proposes a set of methodological solutions for identifying those electronic documents with evidential value, determining their life cycle, defining a preservation policy and creating a digital archive.

S'estableix una relació entre els cursos bàsics de treball de referència, impartits en les escoles de Biblioteconomia i Documentació nord-americanes, i les assignatures Serveis d'informació i Serveis i fonts d'informació presents en els plans d'estudis de la Diplomatura en Biblioteconomia i Documentació de la Universitat de Barcelona durant la dècada dels noranta. Es presenta una revisió de la literatura recent sobre la naturalesa i les tendències del curs bàsic esmentat, i s'analitzen els programes corresponents a aquesta assignatura que s'imparteixen a les millors escoles dels Estats Units d'Amèrica

Revistes electròniques, comunicació científica i biblioteques

El recent auge de les revistes científiques electròniques va tenir els seus inicis quan les biblioteques van començar a tenir accés a la World Wide Web (WWW) a mitjan dels noranta. El canvi del paper al suport digital ha afectat l'alineament i el paper tradicionals dels principals implicats, bàsicament autors, editors, universitats i biblioteques. L'autora ofereix una breu anàlisi de la història de la revista científica, seguida de l'evolució de les revistes electròniques durant les dues darreres dècades. L'article se centra aleshores en les implicacions que aquestes han tingut en els processos i serveis tradicionals de la biblioteca, com ara selecció, adquisicions, catalogació, emmagatzematge, preservació i serveis a l'usuari. A la conclusió, l'autora especula sobre l'efecte que l'edició en el web pot tenir a llarg termini sobre el format que la revista científica ha presentat des de fa més de 300 anys.

Electronic journals, scholarly communication and libraries

The recent surge in scientific electronic journals began when libraries began having access to the WWW in the mid-1990s. The shift from paper to digital has affected the traditional alignment and role of the primary "stakeholders" -mainly authors, publishers, universities and libraries. The author offers a brief review of the history of the scholarly journal followed by the evolution of e-journals in during the past two decades. The article then focuses on the implications that these have had on traditional library processes and services such as selection, acquisitions, cataloguing, storage, preservation and user services. In the conclusion the author speculates on the long term effect of Web-based publishing on the format of the traditional scholarly journal as it has existed for over 300 years.

The response was immediate and since the decade of the 1990s different projects have been designed to guarantee permanent access to the digital production -retrieval, storage, handling, preservation and dissemination. This article presents an international overview of existing models of national digital repositories, a name given to these projects that are normally generated by national libraries with a common objective: ensuring that web pages are always accessible.

We review the participation of the Faculty of Library Sciences and Documentation of the University of Barcelona in the Erasmus program since 1993. In general, student participation has been low. We present the results of a study conducted in May 2007 among the students of the Faculty, designed a) to assess their experience of the Erasmus program and their evaluation of it and b) to promote student participation. Though the vast majority of students have heard of the Erasmus program, their awareness of specific aspects of the program is relatively low

Sota el títol de Biblioteconomía y Documentación en la era digital: docencia e investigación, l'Observatori de la Comunicació Científica, la Secció Científica de Biblioteconomia i Documentació del Departament de Ciències Polítiques i Socials i l'Institut de Lingüística Aplicada (IULA) de la Universitat Pompeu Fabra organitzaren en les dates ja esmentades el I Encuentro Británico-Español de Profesores de Biblioteconomia y Documentación a la seu de la Rambla d'aquesta Universitat. Han col·laborat en aquesta activitat, a més, el Ministerio de Educación y Cultura, el Departamento de Biblioteconomía y Documentación de la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, la Llicenciatura en Documentació de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, la Llicenciatura en Documentació de la Universitat de Barcelona, la Llicenciatura en Documentació de laUniversitat Oberta de Catalunya, el Col·legi Oficial de Bibliotecaris-Documentalistes de Catalunya (COBDC) i la School of Information and Media Robert Gordon University. Pel nombre d'institucions implicades i pelseu alt nivell, es constata fàcilment que la trobada naixia amb molt bons auguris.
