Electrically driven Er3+ doped Si slot waveguides emitting at 1530 nm are demonstrated. Two different Er3+ doped active layers were fabricated in the slot region: a pure SiO2 and a Si-rich oxide. Pulsed polarization driving of the waveguides was used to characterize the time response of the electroluminescence (EL) and of the signal probe transmission in 1 mm long waveguides. Injected carrier absorption losses modulate the EL signal and, since the carrier lifetime is much smaller than that of Er3+ ions, a sharp EL peak was observed when the polarization was switched off. A time-resolved electrical pump & probe measurement in combination with lock-in amplifier techniques allowed to quantify the injected carrier absorption losses. We found an extinction ratio of 6 dB, passive propagation losses of about 4 dB/mm, and a spectral bandwidth > 25 nm at an effective d.c. power consumption of 120 μW. All these performances suggest the usage of these devices as electro-optical modulators.

Rib-loaded waveguides containing Er3+-coupled Si nanoclusters (Si-nc) have been produced to observe optical gain at 1535 nm. The presence ofSi-nc strongly improves the efficiency ofEr 3+ excitation but may introduce optical loss mechanisms, such as Mie scattering and confined carrier absorption. Losses strongly affect the possibility of obtaining positive optical gain. Si-nc-related losses have been minimized to 1 dB/cm by lowering the annealing time ofthe Er3+-doped silicon-rich oxide deposited by reactive magnetron cosputtering. Photoluminescence (PL) and lifetime measurements show that all Er3+ ions are optically active while those that can be excited at high pump rates via Si-nc are only a small percentage. Er3+ absorption cross section is found comparable to that ofEr 3+ in SiO 2.However, dependence on the effective refractive index has been found. In pump-probe measurements, it is shown how the detrimental role ofconfined carrier absorption can be attenuated by reducing the annealing time. A maximum signal enhancement ofabout 1.34 at 1535 nm was measured.

This article presents the results of a study of the efficiency of silanation process of calcium phosphate glasses particles and its effect on the bioactivity behavior of glasspoly( methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) composites. Two different calcium phosphate glasses: 44.5CaO-44.5P2O5-11Na2O (BV11) and 44.5CaO-44.5P2O5-6Na2O-5TiO2 (G5) were synthesized and treated with silane coupling agent. The glasses obtained were characterized by Microprobe and BET while the efficiency of silanation process was determined using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Thermal Analysis (DTA and TG)techniques. The content of coupling agent chemically tightly bond to the silanated glasses ascended to 1.69 6 0.02 wt % for BV11sil glass and 0.93 6 0.01 wt % for G5sil glass. The in vitro bioactivity test carried out in Simulated Body Fluid (SBF) revealed certain bioactive performance with the use of both silanated glasses in a 30% (by weight) as filler of the PMMA composites because of a superficial deposition of an apatite-like layer with low content of CO3 22 and HPO4 22 in its structure after soaking for 30 days occurred. We present structural and electrical properties for p- and n-type layers grown close to the transition between a-Si:H and nc-Si:H onto different substrates: Corning 1737 glass, ZnO:Al-coated glass and stainless steel. Structural properties were observed to depend on the substrate properties for samples grown under the same deposition conditions. Different behaviour was observed for n- and p-type material. Stainless steel seemed to enhance crystallinity when dealing with n-type layers, whereas an increased crystalline fraction was obtained on glass for p-type samples. Electrical conduction in the direction perpendicular to the substrate seemed to be mainly determined by the interfaces or by the existence of an amorphous incubation layer that might determine the electrical behaviour. In the direction perpendicular to the substrate, n-type layers exhibited a lower resistance value than p-type ones, showing better contact properties between the layer and the substrate.

p-toluensulfonate doped polypyrrole ~PPy!, undergoes an electric-field induced reversible transition from an insulating state to a highly conductive one. The spatially average field can be as small as 200 V/cm, when the temperature of the sample is below 20 K. The applied electric field leads to a sharp jump in the value of the current to a value which is nearly five orders of magnitude higher than before. When the applied electric field is reduced to below a critical value, the system switches back to a low conductive state. The effect is reversible, symmetric in voltage, and reproducible for different samples. The switching is, we believe, an electronic glass melting transition and it is due to the disordered, highly charged granular nature of PPy.

Visible up-conversion in ZnO:Er and ZnO:Er:Yb thin films deposited by RF magnetron sputtering under different O2-rich atmospheres has been studied. Conventional photoluminescence (325 nm laser source) and up-conversion (980 nm laser source) have been performed in the films before and after an annealing process at 800 °C. The resulting spectra demonstrate that the thermal treatment, either during or post-deposition, activates optically the Er3+ ions, being the latter process much more efficient. Moreover, the atmosphere during deposition was also found to be an important parameter, as the deposition under O2 flow increases the optical activity of Er+3 ions. In addition, the inclusion of Yb3+ ions into the films has shown an enhancement of the visible up-conversion emission at 660 nm by a factor of 4, which could be associated to either a better energy transfer from the 2F5/2 Yb level to the 4I11/2 Er one, or to the prevention of having Er2O3 clustering in the films.

In this study, (011)-highly oriented Sr, Nb co-doped BiFeO3 (BFO) thin films were successfully grown on SrRuO3/Si substrates by rf-magnetron sputtering. The presence of parasite magnetic phases was ruled out based on the high resolution x-ray diffraction data. BFO films exhibited a columnar-like grain growth with rms surface roughness values of 5.3 nm and average grain sizes of 65-70 nm for samples with different thicknesses. Remanent polarization values (2Pr) of 54 lC cm 2 at room temperature were found for the BFO films with a ferroelectric behavior characteristic of an asymmetric device structure. Analysis of the leakage mechanisms for this structure in negative bias suggests Schottky injection and a dominant Poole-Frenkel trap-limited conduction at room temperature. Oxygen vacancies and Fe3þ/Fe2þ trap centers are consistent with the surface chemical bonding states analysis from x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data. The (011)-BFO/ SrRuO3/Si film structure exhibits a strong magnetic interaction at the interface between the multiferroic film and the substrate layer where an enhanced ferromagnetic response at 5 K was observed. Zero-field cooled (ZFC) and field cooled (FC) magnetization curves of this film system revealed a possible spin glass behavior at spin freezing temperatures below 30 K depending on the BFO film thickness.

We use a Colombian TV game show to test gender differences in competitivebehavior where there is no opportunity for discrimination and females face no genderspecificexternal constraints. Each game started with six contestants who had toanswer general knowledge questions in private. There were five rounds of questionsand, at the end of each, one participant was eliminated. Despite equality in startingnumbers, women earn less than men and exit the game at a faster rate. In particular, there are more voluntary withdrawals by women than men. We draw an analogybetween the game and the process by which employees rise through the levels of acorporation. As such, we note that glass ceilings may result, in part, from women sown behavior and this raises the issue of how women are socialized to behave. At thesame time, our results illustrate that maintaining and promoting gender diversity at thelower/middle ranks of organizations is necessary to obtain gender diversity at the top.

The representation of women in top corporate officer positions is steadily increasing. However, little is known about the impact this will have. A large literature documents that women are different from men in their choices and in their preferences, but most of this literature relies on samples of college students or workers at lower levels in the corporate hierarchy. If women must be like men to break the glass ceiling, we might expect gender differences to disappear among top executives. In contrast, using a large survey of all directors of publicly-traded corporations in Sweden, we show that female and male directors differ systematically in their core values and risk attitudes. While certain population gender differences disappear at the director level, others do not. Consistent with the findings for the Swedish population, female directors are more benevolent and universally concerned, but less power-oriented than men. However, they are less traditional and security-oriented than their male counterparts. Furthermore, female directors are slightly more risk-loving than male directors. This suggests that having a women on the board need not lead to more risk-averse decision-making.

Mastoparan, a basic tetradecapeptide isolated from wasp venom, is a novel mitogen for Swiss 3T3 cells. This peptide induced DNA synthesis in synergy with insulin in a concentration-dependent manner; half-maximum and maximum responses were achieved at 14 and 17 microM, respectively. Mastoparan also stimulated DNA synthesis in the presence of other growth promoting factors including bombesin, insulin-like growth factor-1, and platelet-derived growth factor. The synergistic mitogenic stimulation by mastoparan can be dissociated from activation of phospholipase C. Mastoparan did not stimulate phosphoinositide breakdown, Ca2+ mobilization or protein kinase C-mediated phosphorylation of a major cellular substrate or transmodulation of the epidermal growth factor receptor. In contrast, mastoparan stimulated arachidonic acid release, prostaglandin E2 production, and enhanced cAMP accumulation in the presence of forskolin. These responses were inhibited by prior treatment with pertussis toxin. Hence, mastoparan stimulates arachidonic acid release via a pertussis toxin-sensitive G protein in Swiss 3T3 cells. Arachidonic acid, like mastoparan, stimulated DNA synthesis in the presence of insulin. The ability of mastoparan to stimulate mitogenesis was reduced by pertussis toxin treatment. These results demonstrate, for the first time, that mastoparan stimulates reinitiation of DNA synthesis in Swiss 3T3 cells and indicate that this peptide may be a useful probe to elucidate signal transduction mechanisms in mitogenesis.

We present an extensive study of the structural and optical emission properties in aluminum silicates and soda-lime silicates codoped with Si nanoclusters (Si-nc) and Er. Si excess of 5 and 15¿at.¿% and Er concentrations ranging from 2×1019 up to 6×1020¿cm¿3 were introduced by ion implantation. Thermal treatments at different temperatures were carried out before and after Er implantation. Structural characterization of the resulting structures was performed to obtain the layer composition and the size distribution of Si clusters. A comprehensive study has been carried out of the light emission as a function of the matrix characteristics, Si and Er contents, excitation wavelength, and power. Er emission at 1540¿nm has been detected in all coimplanted glasses, with similar intensities. We estimated lifetimes ranging from 2.5¿to¿12¿ms (depending on the Er dose and Si excess) and an effective excitation cross section of about 1×10¿17¿cm2 at low fluxes that decreases at high pump power. By quantifying the amount of Er ions excited through Si-nc we find a fraction of 10% of the total Er concentration. Upconversion coefficients of about 3×10¿18¿cm¿3¿s¿1 have been found for soda-lime glasses and one order of magnitude lower in aluminum silicates.

Nitrogen doped silicon (NIDOS) films have been deposited by low-pressure chemical vapor deposition from silane SiH4 and ammonia NH3 at high temperature (750°C) and the influences of the NH3/SiH4 gas ratio on the films deposition rate, refractive index, stoichiometry, microstructure, electrical conductivity, and thermomechanical stress are studied. The chemical species derived from silylene SiH2 into the gaseous phase are shown to be responsible for the deposition of NIDOS and/or (silicon rich) silicon nitride. The competition between these two deposition phenomena leads finally to very high deposition rates (100 nm/min) for low NH3/SiH4 gas ratio (R¿0.1). Moreover, complex variations of NIDOS film properties are evidenced and related to the dual behavior of the nitrogen atom into silicon, either n-type substitutional impurity or insulative intersticial impurity, according to the Si¿N atomic bound. Finally, the use of NIDOS deposition for the realization of microelectromechanical systems is investigated.
