Process virtualization theory (PVT) and institutional theory (INT) to explain SAAS adoption

Software as a service (SaaS) is a service model in which the applications are accessible from various client devices through internet. Several studies report possible factors driving the adoption of SaaS but none have considered the perception of the SaaS features and the pressures existing in the organization’s environment. We propose an integrated research model that combines the process virtualization theory (PVT) and the institutional theory (INT). PVT seeks to explain whether SaaS processes are suitable for migration into virtual environments via an information technology-based mechanism. INT seeks to explain the effects of the institutionalized environment on the structure and actions of the organization. The research makes three contributions. First, it addresses a gap in the SaaS adoption literature by studying the internal perception of the technical features of SaaS and external coercive, normative, and mimetic pressures faced by an organization. Second, it empirically tests many of the propositions of PVT and INT in the SaaS context, thereby helping to determine how the theory operates in practice. Third, the integration of PVT and INT contributes to the information system (IS) discipline, deepening the applicability and strengths of these theories.

A «vontade de verdade» nas Confissões de Santo Agostinho

Pelo menos a partir de Platão, o problema da “vontade de verdade” tornou-se um dos problemas filosóficos mais badalados do pensamento ocidental. A polémica e a tinta gasta à volta deste problema, a partir daí, foram mais que muitas. Desde a Antiguidade até aos séculos mais recentes o trabalho filosófico tenta e volta a tentar olhar para este problema. Muito resumidamente, o problema da “vontade de verdade” diz respeito à pergunta pela forma como está constituída a relação entre o homem e a verdade, i.e., entre o projecto vital humano e o seu projecto de conhecimento. Não deve causar espanto, por isso, que seja um dos problemas centrais da filosofia; está preso a duas questões essenciais do homem: a vida boa e a possibilidade de conhecer. As Confissões de Agostinho são um momento importante da discussão em torno do conceito de «vontade de verdade». Ao longo dos treze livros, Agostinho, que diz ter descoberto a verdade, parece situar-se numa posição impossível que se caracteriza pela radicalização tanto da necessidade de perseguição da “vontade de verdade” para alcançar a felicidade como pela radicalização do diagnóstico da profunda fragilidade do conhecimento humano. O objectivo deste estudo é mostar como tanto a identificação do homem com a ideia de “cor inquietum” como com a ideia de “cor contenebratum” se articula com a tese agostiniana de que se deve, a risco de todo o perigo, procurar a verdade.

There is an undeniable link between child support and scholarship, under article 1880 of the portuguese Civil Code. Of course, by being within family relationships, such link could not be out of controversy. At a time when the continuation of studies is more and more urgent, this link between the two, is often subject of disputes, especially resultant from the interpretation of the law, due to the wide extension that it is entitle to; and many times is also insufficient to the most interested people – the youngsters that want to study. Regardless of the imprecision that rules under article 1880 of the portuguese Civil Code, this article reveals a huge importance by enabling young adults and students to continue their studies, with the financial help from their parents - the responsibility of the parents with the support of their children should have ended by the time they have become legal adults, but it is extended by this article, once the criteria is filled, especially related to the reasonableness of what is required to the parents and the temporal duration of the education chosen. That is, considering that reaching adulthood does not cease the duty of support from the parents, it is important to know how much can parents provide to their children, bearing in mind their income and the child’s and his/her needs, behavior and the intellectual capacity of the child as a student and also the parent-child relationship; and, until when is such support due, taking in to account several circumstances of life and the difficulties inherent to the degree chosen and even the extension of the studies to a master or to a PhD degree that justifies the extension of the parent’s duty. Anyway, the application of article 1880 of the portuguese Civil Code is always based on a case by case analysis and on the economic insufficient of the youngsters to suffice themselves and the simultaneous desire to continue their studies.
