A demência e outros quadros neuropsiquiátricos ligados ao envelhecimento determinam uma carga significativa na sociedade em geral e nas famílias em particular. As apresentações clínicas envolvendo aspectos familiares são múltiplas e ocorrem independentemente do diagnóstico (doença de Alzheimer e outras demências, depressão ou outras doenças mentais do idoso). Daqui decorre uma tendência crescente para trabalhar com famílias no contexto da psiquiatria geriátrica. As questões de casal não motivam frequentemente, por si, o recurso a terapia, mas uma intervenção conjugal pode ser muito útil em qualquer fase do ciclo vital familiar. A efectividade da terapia familiar sistémica não tem sido avaliada tão consistentemente como a psicoeducação familiar. Não obstante, pode constituir um recurso importante quando o foco de intervenção clínica é a dinâmica familiar. Isto, sobretudo, nas famílias em que as circularidades disfuncionais precedem o início da doença num dos seus elementos, não sendo determinadas exclusivamente por ela. Noutras famílias, as abordagens psicoeducativas terão indicação privilegiada (variando os formatos, locais e níveis de intensidade). Contudo, a leitura sistémica dos contextos, com intervenção adequada, não se restringe à terapia familiar clássica nem implica a sua indicação formal: pode inspirar a psicoeducação da família ou abordagens menos estruturadas. As intervenções familiares, qualquer que seja a sua natureza, devem ser precedidas de uma avaliação estruturada mas exequível. A avaliação constitui, intrinsecamente, um início da intervenção, obrigando a uma constante actualização ao longo do processo. As terapias familiares clássicas não têm sido utilizadas, correntemente, em famílias de doentes neuropsiquiátricos idosos. Não obstante, as terapias familiares podem ter indicação em casos específicos e o trabalho genérico com famílias está no âmago da prática da psiquiatria geriátrica.

This article reports preliminary findings about Portuguese scientist women’s perceptions of gender issues in their institutions. Empirical data have been collected by means of an electronic open questionnaire sent to the AMONET (Portuguese Association of Women in Science) members. Basically, the study aims to examine the degree of satisfaction with their profession, the difficulties they meet in everyday professional life, and whether they feel or have felt gender discrimination in their institutions. Findings show that all respondents feel happy or very happy with their profession. However, discrimination is mentioned by a significant percentage, even if such discrimination assumes, quite often, an elusive way, suggesting that higher institutions still discriminate against women. Findings, articulated with literature, also lead to discussion about power and leadership, both in the hands of male academics, in the majority of the institutions, as well as the clarification of different perceptions of ambition both by women and man.

This paper provides empirical evidence of the impact of life satisfaction on the individual intention to migrate. The impacts of individual characteristics and of country macroeconomic variables on the intention to migrate are analyzed jointly. Differently from other studies, we allow for life satisfaction to serve as a mediator between macroeconomic variables and the intention to migrate. Using the Eurobarometer Survey for 27 Central Eastern European (CEE) and Western European (non-CEE) countries, we find that people have a higher intention to migrate when dissatisfied with life. The socio-economic variables and macroeconomic conditions have an effect on the intention to migrate indirectly through life satisfaction. The impact of life satisfaction on the intention to migrate for middle-aged individuals with past experience of migration, low level of education, and with a low or average income from urban areas is higher in CEE countries than in non-CEE countries.

A large number of expensive, but highly profitable branded prescription drugs will go off-patent in the USA between 2011 and 2015. Their revenues are crucial to fund the immense costs associated with the development of an innovative drug. The rising cost pressure on pharmaceutical stakeholders has increased the demand for more affordable medications, as provided by the branded drug's generic counterpart. Yet, research based incumbents are moving beyond the traditional late lifecycle strategies and deploy more aggressive tactics in order to protect their brands, as seen with Pfizer's Lipitor!. It is doubtful, whether these efforts will help the blockbuster business model to resist current market conditions.

This present study aimed to investigate the fatigue life of unused (new) endodontic instruments made of NiTi with control memory by Coltene™ and subjected to the multi curvature of a mandibular first molar root canal. Additionally, the instrument‟s structural behaviour was analysed through non-linear finite element analysis (FEA). The fatigue life of twelve Hyflex™ CM files was assessed while were forced to adopt a stance with multiple radius of curvature, similar to the ones usually found in a mandibular first molar root canal; nine of them were subjected to Pecking motion, a relative movement of axial type. To achieve this, it was designed an experimental setup with the aim of timing the instruments until fracture while worked inside a stainless steel mandibular first molar model with relative axial motion to simulate the pecking motion. Additionally, the model‟s root canal multi-curvature was confirmed by radiography. The non-linear finite element analysis was conducted using the computer aided design software package SolidWorks™ Simulation, in order to define the imposed displacement required by the FEA, it was necessary to model an endodontic instrument with simplified geometry using SolidWorks™ and subsequently analyse the geometry of the root canal CAD model. The experimental results shown that the instruments subjected to pecking motion displayed higher fatigue life values and higher lengths of fractured tips than those with only rotational relative movement. The finite element non-linear analyses shown, for identical conditions, maximum values for the first principal stress lower than the yield strength of the material and those were located in similar positions to the instrument‟s fracture location determined by the experimental testing results.
