Pentachlorophenol (PCP) bioremediation by the fungal strains amongst the cork- colonising community has not yet been analysed. In this paper, the co- and direct metabolism of PCP by each of the 17 fungal species selected from this community were studied. Using hierarchical data analysis, the isolates were ranked by their PCP bioremediation potential. Fifteen isolates were able to degrade PCP under co-metabolic conditions, and surprisingly Chrysonilia sitophila, Trichoderma longibrachiatum, Mucor plumbeus, Penicillium janczewskii and P. glandicola were able to directly metabolise PCP, leading to its complete depletion from media. PCP degradation intermediates are preliminarily discussed. Data emphasise the signiWcance of these fungi to have an interesting potential to be used in PCP bioremediation processes.

Do information flows matter for remittance behavior? We design and implement a randomized control trial to quantitatively assess the role of communication between migrants and their contacts abroad on the extent and value of remittance flows. In the experiment, a random sample of 1,500 migrants residing in Ireland was offered the possibility of contacting their networks outside the host country for free over a varying number of months. We find a sizable, positive impact of our intervention on the value of migrant remittances sent. Our results exclude that the remittance effect we identify is a simple substitution effect. Instead, our analysis points to this effect being a likely result of improved information via factors such as better migrant control over remittance use, enhanced trust in remittance channels due to experience sharing, or increased remittance recipients’ social pressure on migrants.

Ce texte présente une partie des résultats d’une recherche dont le terrain est constitué par trois localités – une ville (Guimarães), un village (Vizela) et un bourg (Santa Eulália). Notre étude porte sur les représentations de l’espace, que l’on considère comme partie des composantes culturelles qui intègrent les processus de constitution des identités collectives. Les configurations spatiales qui correspondent aux représentations de chaque communauté sont présentes dans les processus de négociation spatial que les trois localités établissent entre elles, en vue de la constitution d’un espace d’ensemble compatible. L’identité de chacune dépend donc de la forme que prend l’espace régional qui comprend les trois localités étudiées. L’étude de cas (Vizela) démontre, dans une situation de transformation du territoire, qu’une double contrainte, organisée par l’inclusion et l’exclusion, conduit à la projection d’un nouvel espace - d’inclusion spatiale, sociale et symbolique - qui constitue une nouvelle réponse à l’imbrication des espaces organisés par différentes villes. Le refus d’une inclusion régionale conduit à la création/revendication d’un nouveau découpage spatial, défini à une échelle plus restreinte, et ce processus se transforme en un point de fixation identitaire.

RESUMO - O presente estudo pretende contribuir a nÃvel de saúde pública para o planeamento de estratégias orientadas para a prevenção, rastreio e tratamento do VIH/Sida em trabalhadores sexuais em contexto de interior. Esta é uma população de difÃcil acesso, particularmente vulnerável à infeção por VIH, e associada a fatores de risco que incluem a pobreza, discriminação e desigualdade de género, estigma e exclusão social, condicionando o seu acesso a serviços de saúde. Analisaram-se 272 questionários aplicados no âmbito do estudo PREVIH na área da Grande Lisboa no perÃodo entre Agosto de 2011 e Setembro de 2012 a pessoas que fazem trabalho sexual em contexto de interior. Foi realizada uma abordagem analÃtica permitindo a descrição do fenómeno e a análise da relação entre variáveis sociodemográficas e variáveis sobre o acesso a saúde para informação, prevenção e teste na área do VIH/Sida. Verificou-se que nesta amostra maioritariamente feminina existe elevada presença dos outros dois géneros e os indivÃduos são maioritariamente migrantes. O trabalho sexual é uma forma exclusiva de trabalho, sendo exercido a tempo inteiro e em apartamentos. Foram detetados condicionamentos no acesso a serviços de saúde nas populações minoritárias e mais suscetÃveis a discriminação, tanto na questão do género como da nacionalidade. Estes resultados apontam para a necessidade de planear intervenções nesta área que permitam uma abordagem participativa e de proximidade com as populações mais vulneráveis e também a necessidade de dar continuidade à investigação nesta área no sentido de reforçar polÃticas de saúde pública aplicadas a trabalhadores sexuais.

Companhia das Quintas, Limited Company wishes to conquer the Chinese market with its wines. For that, it decided to enter in a partnership with a local importer and distributor. This project analyses the macroeconomic factors of the country, the local market and the consumer behavior, using on-site research that included interviews with professionals of the industry, unstructured observation of the consumer and existing statistical data analysis. Finally, the project presents a marketing plan to make this partnership a success.

Social ties are potentially an important determinant of migrants’ intention to return to their home country, and yet this topic has not been addressed in the existing economics literature on international migration. This study examines the absolute and relative importance of migrant social networks both at destination and at origin. We base our research on experimental data from Batista and Narciso (2013)1. By defining networks according to different characteristics of their members and migrant return intentions with respect to three different time horizons, we are able to dissect the network effect into its components. After controlling for unobserved heterogeneity and reverse causality biases we find that network at home seems to be the most important determinant of the migrant’s intention to return home within five and ten years.

We propose a theoretical model formally predicting that immigrants with more contacts have additional access to job offers, and are therefore better able to become employed and choose higher paid jobs. Our empirical analysis confirms these findings, while focusing more generally on the relationship between migrants’ social networks and a variety of labor market outcomes (namely wages, employment, occupational choice and job security), contrary to the literature. We find evidence that having one more contact in the network is associated with an increase of 11pp in the probability of being employed and with an increase of about 100 euros in the average salary. However, our data is not suggestive of a network size effect on occupational choice and job security. Our findings are robust to sample selection and other endogeneity concerns.
