The history between cetaceans and humans is documented throughout time not only in reports, descriptions, and tales but also in legal documents, laws and regulations, and tithes. This wealth of information comes from the easy spotting and identification of individuals due to their large size, surface breathing, and conspicuous above water behaviour. This work is based on historical sources and accounts accounting for cetacean presence for the period between the 12th and 17th centuries, as well as scientific articles, newspapers, illustrations, maps, non-published scientific reports, and other grey literature from the 18th century onwards. Information on whale use in Portugal's mainland has been found since as early as the 12th century and has continued to be created throughout time. No certainty can be given for medieval and earlier events, but both scavenging of stranded whales or use of captured ones may have happened. There is an increasing number of accounts of sighted, stranded, used, or captured cetaceans throughout centuries which is clearly associated with a growing effort towards the study of these animals. Scientific Latin species denominations only started to be registered from the 18th century onwards, as a consequence of the evolution of natural sciences in Portugal and increasing interest from zoologists. After the 19th century, a larger number of observations were recorded, and from the 20th century to the present day, regular scientific records have been collected. Research on the environmental history of cetaceans in Portugal shows a several-centuries-old exploitation of whales and dolphins, as resources mainly for human consumption, followed in later centuries by descriptions of natural history documenting strandings and at sea encounters. Most cetaceans species currently thought to be present in Portuguese mainland waters were at some point historically recorded.

Estuaries are perhaps the most threatened environments in the coastal fringe; the coincidence of high natural value and attractiveness for human use has led to conflicts between conservation and development. These conflicts occur in the Sado Estuary since its location is near the industrialised zone of Peninsula of Setúbal and at the same time, a great part of the Estuary is classified as a Natural Reserve due to its high biodiversity. These facts led us to the need of implementing a model of environmental management and quality assessment, based on methodologies that enable the assessment of the Sado Estuary quality and evaluation of the human pressures in the estuary. These methodologies are based on indicators that can better depict the state of the environment and not necessarily all that could be measured or analysed. Sediments have always been considered as an important temporary source of some compounds or a sink for other type of materials or an interface where a great diversity of biogeochemical transformations occur. For all this they are of great importance in the formulation of coastal management system. Many authors have been using sediments to monitor aquatic contamination, showing great advantages when compared to the sampling of the traditional water column. The main objective of this thesis was to develop an estuary environmental management framework applied to Sado Estuary using the DPSIR Model (EMMSado), including data collection, data processing and data analysis. The support infrastructure of EMMSado were a set of spatially contiguous and homogeneous regions of sediment structure (management units). The environmental quality of the estuary was assessed through the sediment quality assessment and integrated in a preliminary stage with the human pressure for development. Besides the earlier explained advantages, studying the quality of the estuary mainly based on the indicators and indexes of the sediment compartment also turns this methodology easier, faster and human and financial resource saving. These are essential factors to an efficient environmental management of coastal areas. Data management, visualization, processing and analysis was obtained through the combined use of indicators and indices, sampling optimization techniques, Geographical Information Systems, remote sensing, statistics for spatial data, Global Positioning Systems and best expert judgments. As a global conclusion, from the nineteen management units delineated and analyzed three showed no ecological risk (18.5 % of the study area). The areas of more concern (5.6 % of the study area) are located in the North Channel and are under strong human pressure mainly due to industrial activities. These areas have also low hydrodynamics and are, thus associated with high levels of deposition. In particular the areas near Lisnave and Eurominas industries can also accumulate the contamination coming from Águas de Moura Channel, since particles coming from that channel can settle down in that area due to residual flow. In these areas the contaminants of concern, from those analyzed, are the heavy metals and metalloids (Cd, Cu, Zn and As exceeded the PEL guidelines) and the pesticides BHC isomers, heptachlor, isodrin, DDT and metabolits, endosulfan and endrin. In the remain management units (76 % of the study area) there is a moderate impact potential of occurrence of adverse ecological effects and in some of these areas no stress agents could be identified. This emphasizes the need for further research, since unmeasured chemicals may be causing or contributing to these adverse effects. Special attention must be taken to the units with moderate impact potential of occurrence of adverse ecological effects, located inside the natural reserve. Non-point source pollution coming from agriculture and aquaculture activities also seem to contribute with important pollution load into the estuary entering from Águas de Moura Channel. This pressure is expressed in a moderate impact potential for ecological risk existent in the areas near the entrance of this Channel. Pressures may also came from Alcácer Channel although they were not quantified in this study. The management framework presented here, including all the methodological tools may be applied and tested in other estuarine ecosystems, which will also allow a comparison between estuarine ecosystems in other parts of the globe.

Abstract Health at work policies: a sociological inquiry into Portuguese corporations Portuguese literature on workplace health policies, programs and activities is still scarce. With this research project the author intends (i) to improve knowledge on the Occupational Health and Safety (shortly thereafter, OSH) management systems and (ii) contribute to the development of health promotion initiatives at a corporate level. Five categories of workplace health initiatives have been identified: (i) Occupational Hygiene and Safety / Improvement of Physical Working Environment (type A programs); (ii) Health Screening, Medical Surveillance and Other Occupational Health Care Provision (type B programs); (iii) Preventing Risk Behaviours / Promoting Healthy Life Styles (type C programs); (iv) Organisational Change / Improvement of Psycho-Social Working Environment (type D programs); and (v) Industrial and Social Welfare (type E programs). A mail questionnaire was sent to the Chief Executive Officer of the 1500 largest Portuguese companies, operating in the primary and secondary sectors (≥ 100 employees) or tertiary sector (≥ 75 employees). Response rate has reached about 20% (259 respondents, representing about 300 companies). Carried out between Spring 1997 and Summer 1998, the fieldwork has encompassed two direct mailings and one phone follow-up. Sample is considered to be representative of the two thousand largest companies. One in four is a multinational. Union membership rate is about 30%, but only 16% has reported the existence of a workers’ health and safety representative. The most frequent workplace health initiatives were those under the traditional scope of the OSH field (type A and B programs) (57% of total) (e.g., Periodical Medical Examinations; Individual Protective Equipment; Assessment of Working Ability). In SMEs (< 250) it was less likely to find out some time-consuming and expensive activities (e.g., Training on OSH knowledge and skills, Improvement of environmental parameters as ventilation, lighting, heating). There were significant differences in SMEs, when compared with the larger ones (≥ 250) concerning type B programs such as Periodical medical examinations, GP consultation, Nursing care, Other medical and non-medical specialities (e.g., psychiatrist, psychologist, ergonomist, physiotherapist, occupational social worker). With regard to type C programs, there were a greater percentage of programs centred on Substance abuse (tobacco, alcohol, and drug) than on Other health risk behaviours. SMEs representatives reported very few prevention- oriented programs in the field of Drug abuse, Nutrition, Physical activity, Off- job accidents, Blood pressure or Weight control. Frequency of type D programs included Training on Human Resources Management, Training on Organisational Behaviour, Total Quality Management, Job Design/Ergonomics, and Workplace rehabilitation. In general, implementation of this type of programs (Organisational Change / Improvement of Psychosocial Working Environment) is not largely driven by health considerations. Concerning Industrial and Social Welfare (Type E programs), the larger employers are in a better position than SMEs to offer to their employees a large spectrum of health resources and facilities (e.g., Restaurant, Canteen, Resting room, Transport, Infra-structures for physical activity, Surgery, Complementary social protection, Support to recreational and cultural activities, Magazine or newsletter, Intranet). Other workplace health promotion programs like Training on Stress Management, Employee Assistance Programs, or Self-help groups are uncommon in the Portuguese worksites. The existence of integrated OSH management systems, not the company size, is the main variable explaining the implementation of more active and innovative workplace health policies in Portugal. The three main prompting factors reported by employers for health protection and promotion initiatives are: (i) Employee absenteeism; (ii) Productivity, quality and/or competitiveness; and (iii) Corporate culture/management philosophy. On the other hand, (i) Improved staff’s health, (ii) Improved working environment and (iii) Improved productivity, quality and/or competitiveness were the three main benefits reported by companies’ representatives, as a result of successful implementation of workplace health initiatives. (i) Lack of staff commitment; (ii) Lack of time; and (iii) Problems of co-operation and communication within company or establishment (iii) are perceived to be the main barriers companies must cope with. Asked about the main facilitating factors, these companies have pointed out the following ones: (i) Top management commitment; (ii) Corporate culture; and (iii) Sense of social responsibility. This sociological research report shows the methodological weaknesses of workplace health initiatives, carried out by Portuguese companies during the last ‘90s. In many cases, these programs and actions were not part of a corporate health strategy and policy, (i) based on the assessment of workers’ health needs and expectancies, (ii) advocated by the employer or the chief executive officer, (ii) planned and implemented with the staff consultation and participation or (iv) evaluated according to a cost-benefit analysis. In short, corporate health policy and action were still rather based on more traditional OSH approaches and should be reoriented towards Workplace Health Promotion (WHP) approach. According to the Luxembourg Declaration of Workplace Health Promotion in the European Union (1997), WHP is “a combination of: (i) improving the work organisation and environment; (ii) promoting active participation; (iii) encouraging personal development”.Résumée Politique(s) de santé au travail: une enquête sociologique aux entreprises portugaises Au Portugal on ne sait presque rien des politiques de santé au travail, adoptés par les entreprises.

Embora não tenham sido estatisticamente evidenciadas as relações entre o sentido de coerência e a ligação materno-fetal e entre estes e os comportamentos de saúde, o carácter preliminar destes resultados, devido à subjectividade do processo de selecção não probabilístico da amostra estudada e à reduzida dimensão desta amostra, e a escassez de estudos descritos na literatura fazem com que seja prudente a realização de estudos de follow-up, com amostras de maiores dimensões, aleatórias e representativas da população, para que sejam estabelecidas quaisquer conclusões acerca destas questões.-----------------------------ABSTRACT - One of the greatest challenges faced by Public Health in nowadays is the burden represented by chronic diseases as co-responsible for the majority of deaths that occurs in the world, for the meaningful and progressive reduction of quality of life and increase of disabilities in affected individuals and for an important part of health expenses. However, the complexity of the genetic, biological, psychological, emotional, social, cultural and environmental dynamics that involves human behaviours related to some of these diseases – cardiovascular diseases, some kind of cancers, obesity, hypertension, diabetes and joint and bone diseases – poses the continuous challenge of searching for new and effective interventions of health promotion that positively influence individuals, groups and community lifestyles. Due to the fact that sense of coherence is an individual personality trace directly or indirectly influenced by the same factors listed above, the discovery of a relationship between this construct and human behaviours might be promising to the creation of new health promotion interventions. On the other hand, pregnancy may represent a turn point to the mother’s life and a good start in the baby’s life in relation to sense of coherence and health behaviours and It might occur because of the influence of maternal-fetal attachment. With the purpose of contributing with the creation of effective health promotion interventions through the discovery of probable salutogenic potentials in the referred constructs – sense of coherence and maternal-fetal attachment – , it was developed a quantitative observational study with the following objectives: to increase knowledge about changes in sense of coherence throughout life, specifically during pregnancy; to increase knowledge about the relationship between sense of coherence and maternal-fetal attachment and some social, demographical, psychological, emotional and obstetric factors of pregnant women; to identify probable relationships between sense of coherence, maternal-fetal attachment and pregnant women’s lifestyles, represented by diet habits, caffeine consumption, alcohol consumption, smoking habits, physical activity habits and weigh gain during pregnancy. This report describes the structure and the findings of this study involving a sample of 61 pregnant women who had been followed by health professionals in the mother health services of Carnaxide (Linda-a-Velha unity) and Oeiras Health Centres, in Lisbon, Portugal, between February and July of 2005. The results show that, for the 61 pregnant women who filled the self-reported questionnaire, it was found a statistically significant association between sense of coherence and education level. It was also found some evidence of the associations between sense of coherence and age, marital status and mensal household income and a trend toward pregnant women with higher levels of sense of coherence to drink less alcoholic beverages than pregnant women with lower levels of sense of coherence. However, the others associations tested were not confirmed. Regarding maternal-fetal attachment, it was found, for the sample of 41 women who participated in the second moment of data collection, between the 20th and the 24th week of pregnancy, statistically significant associations with education level and mensal household income. The others associations tested were not confirmed. Although the associations between sense of coherence and maternal-fetal attachment and between these constructs and health behaviours were not confirmed, all findings presented here are considered preliminary because of small dimension of sample and non-probabilistic criteria used for sample selection. What’s more, there are almost no studies described in the literature which could confirm or contradict these findings. Therefore, it is better to be careful and develop follow-up studies, with bigger and representative of population samples, before draw any conclusions about these theme.

----------------------------------- ABSTRACT - Patient safety is, nowadays, a fundamental principle of health care. Despite this fact, each point in the process of care contains an inherent degree of uncertainty. Adverse events may result from problems in practice, products, processes or systems. Improving patient safety requires an effort of a whole complex system, involving a wide range of measures to improve performance, safety and environmental risk management, including, among other priorities, the practice of health care in a safe environment and the best quality. It is known that every year die, in Portuguese hospitals, around three thousand people, due to mistakes made by health professionals. To understand human error and intervene as appropriate in their causes, it is required much more than an assessment of the fact itself, but an assessment of the whole structure where it is likely to occur. There are countless factors that are related to this issue, but human factors, those who may deserve some consideration, are still left out in management guidelines and supervisors considerations. Therefore, this research project seeks to determine, through a literature review, the identification of various human factors that influence the performance of healthcare providers involved in direct provision of care. The aim is also to know which factors are reflected in safety healthcare and how they are, in fact, crucial in the performance of professionals and in the promotion of quality and safety of the healthcare provided in healthcare institutions. Given the conclusive results after a review of literature, it is found that the human factors that influence the performance of health professionals are: communicating and sharing information, knowledge and training, leadership, teamwork, safety culture and learning; workload, physical demands and work environment. It is expected that this project may contribute to advance of the knowledge regarding this problem and be an essential tool to the beginning of a reliance on the development, increasingly important but still limited, of these intangibles management values – the human factors.
