History of Art and Art Criticism: A System in Crisis

This article aims to reconstruct the critical debate regarding the examination of the crisis in the disciplines of art history and criticism with a particular focus on the proposal formulated by U.S. theorists who contributed to October journal. The discrediting of many modernist critical methods, particularly that of Clement Greenberg – the formalist diktat – marked the birth of the journal and gave rise to proposals set forth by critics committed to a new approach. Their divergent positions, nonetheless, have contributed to undermining the traditional concepts of the autonomy of art and criticism. The proposals discussed over the course of publication were the result of a reappraisal of the disciplinary instruments of art history and criticism pursuant to the crucial cultural changes which took place in the 1980s.

The names of things: terminology and the practice of art history

This paper aims to explore the ways in which standard art history terminology shapes the practice of art history by conditioning the interpretation of specific works of art and, in certain cases, the definition of a research subject (especially where questions of genre and periodization are concerned). Taking as a case study a painting by Georges de La Tour, the Peasant Couple Eating, I will argue that terms such as realism, realistic, naturalistic etc. used for its description and/or interpretation, far from constituting objective stylistic characterizations, shape our perception of the work in question. Bringing the question of social class to the center of the discourse on realism, I propose to show how the social divide between the painter and his subject matter (in this case, the peasants) is internalized in the painting’s style and meaning, and how it is fundamental for the understanding of its intentionality and function.

The affinities of the short story with the style of painting dominating the period in which it is produced have often been debated by critics. The effects of the application of impressionist and vorticist principles in painting turns out differently in Katherine Mansfield and Wyndham Lewis’ short stories structure and strategies, according to their conceptions of Art and Life and to his career as a painter.

Southern modernisms from A to Z and back again

The book now being published results from a research project entitled Southern Modernisms that ran from March 2014 to May 2015 with FCT funding. The aim of the project was to explore the possibility of constructing a more inclusive, plural notion of modernism through the revision of Modernism’s prevailing definition – its stylistic focus, its formalist and anti-representative bias, as well as its autonomic assumptions, or, as far as architecture is concerned, its functionalist credo. This critical undertaking was grounded on the hypothesis that southern European modernisms featured a strong entrenchment in popular culture (folk art and vernacular architecture), and that this characteristic could be understood as anticipating some of the premises of, what would later become known as, critical regionalismo. Jeronimo Martins in 2030 succession and strategy planning

The case outlines the history of Jerónimo Martins and the Dos Santos family in the context of a dialogue between the pater familias Alexandre and his successor Pedro. The case idea analyses the problems associated with next generation entrance in the family business and the outcomes on the different stakeholders and environment, with a particular focus on the evolution of the relationship between family, family holding and the JM group. The case is designed to assess the sustainability of a traditional succession strategy in the context of the challenges of globalization and growth of the company and family, analysing the reciprocal influence in a long-term strategy.
