The magnetostratigraphy of two sections in early Miocene marine deposits of the Tagus Basin is studied. Thermal demagnetization was used to isolate the primary component of magnetization for 45 samples from the Foz da Fonte section, and for 74 others from Trafaria section. The succession of the polarity zones found in these sections is tentatively correlated with the geomagnetic polarity time scale (GPTS) on the basis of the biostratigraphic data yielded by planktic Foraminifera. The planktic zones and magnetic polarities recognized in these sections can be adequately correlated with the part of the GPTS [table calibrated by BERGGRENET al. (1985)] corresponding to the Anomalies 6 and 5E (Foz da Fonte) and 5D (Trafaria). This correlations suggests ages between 19,35 and 18,14 Ma for Foz da Fonte section, and 17,90 to 16,98 Ma for Trafaria.

Similarly to other organisms, Vertebrates changed during the Cenozoic Era. Mammals are the only ones to change quickly; their well mineralised bones and teeth are often fossilised. They are highly diverse and even isolated teeth can be identified. They are thus a good tool for establishing a biochronological framewoork. Among Mammals, Rodents with a short lifetime evolve more quickly than the large Mammals. In Europe, the first elaborated zonation was investigated by the Regional Committee on Neogene Stratigraphy and issued as the MN Zonation (Mammals Neogene) by Mein, 1976. During the following years, progress in knowledge lead to new charts. The latest one resulted from collective work (de Bruijn et al., 1992). Bîochronology gives relative data; if we desire to have numerical age estimates, we must correlate these results with radiometrie data, marine biostratigraphîcal units or the Geomagnetic Polarity Time Scale. For Europe, these results are summarised by Steininger et al. (1989-1996) and Steininger (1999). After some recents developments on MN Zonation, here is discussed the succession of Neogene small mammals Portuguese localities. Fortunately these localities are in majority inbedded in marine context. Their assigment to MN Zones is proposed and correlations with the spanish Aragonian Scale (Daams el al., 1999) are also suggested. In fact, some differences appear between Portugal and Aragonian assemblages, probably for ecological reasons. Therefore, the MN zonation is always useful for short and long distance biochronological correlations.

Concluindo, conseguiu-se evidenciar que os indivíduos submetidos a tratamentos de fisioterapia numa UCCI, obtêm um nível de independência funcional mais elevada no momento da alta da fisioterapia, do que antes de serem objetos desta intervenção; o mesmo sucedendo, em relação à mobilidade funcional.---------------ABSTRACT: Currently, the issue aging, triggered by an increasing number of elderly people, unable to meet the demands of self-care and live independently in the community, makes relevant the role of physiotherapy in support to the elderly. The aim of this work is to characterize the evolution of the level of independence in activities of daily living (ADLs), of individuals who perform physiotherapy in long term care hospital. This is a quantitative, observational, longitudinal and descriptive approach. The population of the study focuses on individuals admitted in long-term care in Hospital do Mar. Of this population is withdrawn a convenience sample within a period of four months, according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The instruments used for collecting data were a questionnaire to survey the socio-demographic, health and lifestyle characteristics; Método de Avaliação Biopsicossocial (MAB - Classificação) to assess the level of independence in activities of daily living (ADLs); and the Timed Up and Go (TUG) to assess functional mobility. The main results showed, according to the MAB - Classificação, significant differences between the two time points (before physiotherapy and at discharge from physiotherapy), resulting in a higher level of functional independence in ADLs at discharge from physiotherapy. Regarding the TUG, the average duration of the test decreased at discharge from physiotherapy, relative to the time before physiotherapy, translating into an increase of functional mobility. In conclusion, we were able to show that individuals undergoing physiotherapy treatments in long-term care hospital, obtaining a higher level of functional independence at discharge from physiotherapy than before objects of this intervention; the same applies with respect to functional mobility.

The work described in this thesis was performed at the Laboratory for Intense Lasers (L2I) of Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon (IST-UL). Its main contribution consists in the feasibility study of the broadband dispersive stages for an optical parametric chirped pulse amplifier based on the nonlinear crystal yttrium calcium oxi-borate (YCOB). In particular, the main goal of this work consisted in the characterization and implementation of the several optical devices involved in pulse expansion and compression of the amplified pulses to durations of the order of a few optical cycles (20 fs). This type of laser systems find application in fields such as medicine, telecommunications and machining, which require high energy, ultrashort (sub-100 fs) pulses. The main challenges consisted in the preliminary study of the performance of the broadband amplifier, which is essential for successfully handling pulses with bandwidths exceeding 100 nm when amplified from the μJ to 20 mJ per pulse. In general, the control, manipulation and characterization of optical phenomena on the scale of a few tens of fs and powers that can reach the PW level are extremely difficult and challenging due to the complexity of the phenomena of radiation-matter interaction and their nonlinearities, observed at this time scale and power level. For this purpose the main dispersive components were characterized in detail, specifically addressing the demonstration of pulse expansion and compression. The tested bandwidths are narrower than the final ones, in order to confirm the parameters of these elements and predict the performance for the broadband pulses. The work performed led to additional tasks such as a detailed characterization of laser oscillator seeding the laser chain and the detection and cancelling of additional sources of dispersion.

The design of anchorage blisters of internal continuity post-tensioning tendons of bridges built by the cantilever method, presents some peculiarities, not only because they are intermediate anchorages but also because these anchorages are located in blisters, so the prestressing force has to be transferred from the blister the bottom slab and web of the girder. The high density of steel reinforcement in anchorage blisters is the most common reason for problems with concrete cast in situ, resulting in zones with low concrete compacity, leading to concrete crushing failures under the anchor plates. A solution may involve improving the concrete compression and tensile strength. To meet these requirements a high-performance fibre reinforced self-compacting mix- ture (HPFRC) was used in anchorage corner blisters of post-tensioning tendons, reducing the concrete cross-section and decreasing the reinforcement needed. To assess the ultimate capacity and the adequate serviceability of the local anchorage zone after reducing the minimum concrete cross-section and the confining reinforcement, specified by the anchorage device supplier for the particular tendon, load transfer tests were performed. To investigate the behaviour of anchorage blisters regarding the transmission of stresses to the web and the bottom slab of the girder, and the feasibility of using high performance concrete only in the blister, two half scale models of the inferior corner of a box girder existing bridge were studied: a reference specimen of ordinary reinforced concrete and a HPFRC blister specimen. The design of the reinforcement was based in the tensile forces obtained on strut-and-tie models. An experimental program was carried out to assess the models used in design and to study the feasibility of using high performance concrete only in the blister, either with casting in situ, or with precast solutions. A non-linear finite element analysis of the tested specimens was also performed and the results compared.

The interest in using information to improve the quality of living in large urban areas and its governance efficiency has been around for decades. Nevertheless, the improvements in Information and Communications Technology has sparked a new dynamic in academic research, usually under the umbrella term of Smart Cities. This concept of Smart City can probably be translated, in a simplified version, into cities that are lived, managed and developed in an information-saturated environment. While it makes perfect sense and we can easily foresee the benefits of such a concept, presently there are still several significant challenges that need to be tackled before we can materialize this vision. In this work we aim at providing a small contribution in this direction, which maximizes the relevancy of the available information resources. One of the most detailed and geographically relevant information resource available, for the study of cities, is the census, more specifically the data available at block level (Subsecção Estatística). In this work, we use Self-Organizing Maps (SOM) and the variant Geo-SOM to explore the block level data from the Portuguese census of Lisbon city, for the years of 2001 and 2011. We focus on gauging change, proposing ways that allow the comparison of the two time periods, which have two different underlying geographical bases. We proceed with the analysis of the data using different SOM variants, aiming at producing a two-fold portrait: one, of the evolution of Lisbon during the first decade of the XXI century, another, of how the census dataset and SOM’s can be used to produce an informational framework for the study of cities.
