Practices and trends of telework in the Portuguese industry: the results of surveys in the textile, metal and software sectors

The aim of the TeleRisk Project on labour relations and professional risks within the context of teleworking in Portugal – supported by IDICT – Institute for Development and Inspection of Working Conditions (Ministry of Labour), is to study the practices and forms of teleworking in the manufacturing sectors in Portugal. The project chose also the software industry as a reference sector, even though it does not intend to exclude from the study any other sector of activity or the so-called “hybrid” forms of work. However, the latter must have some of the characteristics of telework. The project thus takes into account the so-called “traditional” sectors of activity, namely textile and machinery and metal engineering (machinery and equipment), not usually associated to this type of work. However, telework could include, in the so-called “traditional” sectors, other variations that are not found in technologically based sectors. One of the evaluation methods for the dynamics associated to telework consisted in carrying out surveys by means of questionnaires, aimed at employers in the sectors analysed. This paper presents some of the results of those surveys. It is important to mention that, being a preliminary analysis, it means that it does not pretend to have exhausted all the issues in the survey, but has meant that it shows the bigger tendencies, in terms of teleworking practices, of the Portuguese industry.

Changing representations and practices in school mathematics: the case of Modern Math in Portugal

The curricular movement known as Modern Mathematics aimed at the transformation of representations and practices in school mathematics. Its study provides us with ways of understanding how these changes came about. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the understanding of the ways in which representations of school mathematics gradually were influenced by ideas from the Modern Mathematics movement, how these new ideas merged into local educational traditions, and how they were transformed into meaningful practice. This work is centred on the Portuguese context from the middle 1950s to the middle 1960s, and builds on Chervel’s notion of school culture and Gruzinski’s discussion of connected histories.

Atitudes, conhecimentos e práticas dos médicos de família face aos rastreios de autonomia funcional multidimensional em pessoas idosas

RESUMO - O envelhecimento demográfico é uma constatação e ao mesmo tempo uma oportunidade para viver de forma mais saudável e autónoma o mais tempo possível. A principal razão para a admissão de pessoas idosas em instituições e para o uso desproporcionado de serviços de saúde é o declínio funcional que acompanha o envelhecimento. Os Cuidados de Saúde Primários apresentam‐se como contexto ideal para promover cuidados antecipatórios. A avaliação da autonomia funcional multidimensional permite a detecção de perturbações incipientes. Os programas de rastreios facilitam o desencadear de recursos para a detecção precoce e tratamento. Os médicos sentem diversas barreiras na aplicação dos rastreios, como a falta de familiaridade com os testes, bem como a falta de tempo ou recursos. O estudo aqui proposto visa conhecer, a título exploratório, as atitudes dos médicos de família face aos rastreios de autonomia funcional multidimensional em pessoas idosas; avaliar o grau de conhecimento sobre esta abordagem multidimensional, no que diz respeito às áreas e instrumentos a avaliar; caracterizar as práticas na prestação de cuidados preventivos às pessoas idosas e caracterizar as condições genéricas necessárias para a aplicação destes rastreios no contexto dos cuidados de saúde primários. Para tal, irá basear‐se num questionário auto‐administrado aos médicos de família dos 22 Agrupamentos de Centros de Saúde, na Região de Saúde de Lisboa e Vale do Tejo. As suas conclusões poderão contribuir para uma uniformização do conceito de autonomia funcional multidimensional e para a realização de um levantamento de necessidades de formação sobre a abordagem multidimensional e interdisciplinar.

Knowledge and practices of general practitioners of district Peshawar about schizophrenia

ABSTRACT: Schizophrenia with its disabling features has been placed in the top ten of global burden of disease and is associated with long-term decline in functional ability. General Practitioners not only have an important role in treating patients with an established diagnosis of schizophrenia but they can also contribute significantly by identifying people in early stages of psychosis as they are the first hand medical help available and the duration of untreated psychosis is a good indicator of patient’s prognosis. This cross sectional survey, conducted at the clinics of General Practitioners, was designed to assess the knowledge and practices of general practitioners in Peshawar on diagnosis and treatment of schizophrenia. A semi structured questionnaire was used to assess their knowledge and practices regarding schizophrenia. The Knowledge/Practice was then categorized as good or poor based on their responses to the questions of the administered questionnaire. Overall, the results showed that the knowledge and practices of general practitioners of district Peshawar were poor regarding schizophrenia and may be responsible for delayed diagnosis, inadequate treatment and poor prognosis.
