This paper approaches issues related to frame problems and nonresponse in surveys. These nonsampling errors affect the accuracy of the estimates whereas the estimators became biased and less precise. We analyse some estimation methods that deal with those problems and give an especial focus to post-stratification procedures.

The relative attractiveness of cities as places to live determines population movements in or out of them. Understanding the appealing features of a city is fundamental to local governments, particularly for cities facing population decline. Pull and push attributes of cities can include economic aspects, the availability of amenities and psychological constructs, initiating a discussion around which factors are more relevant in explaining migration. However, a pull–push approach has been underexplored in studies of shrinking cities. In the present study, we contribute to the discussion by identifying pull and push factors in Portuguese shrinking cities. Data were collected using a face-to-face questionnaire survey of 701 residents in four shrinking cities: Oporto, Barreiro, Peso da Régua and Moura. Factor analysis and automatic linear modelling were used to analyse the data. Our results support previous findings that the economic activity of a city is the most relevant feature for retaining residents. However, other characteristics specific to each city, especially those related to heritage and natural beauty, are also shown to influence a city’s attractiveness as a place to live. The cause of population shrinkage is also found to influence residents’ assessments of the pull and push attributes of each city. Furthermore, the results show the relevance of social ties and of place attachment to inhabitants’ intention to continue living in their city of residence.

The forces of globalization are changing the skills and competences required by effective global leadership. Accordingly, Business Schools (BSs) must adapt curriculums to the new queries so they, in fact, do develop future leader able to meet the challenges ahead. Increasing attention is being placed on global mindset (GM). Yet, this concept lacks research support. To help fulfilling this gap this research analyzes the effect that cultural intelligence (CQ) and a set of both personal and psychological characteristics have on GM enhancement. Based on a sample of academic students (N=220), findings suggested that CQ, vacations abroad and cosmopolitanism directly increase GM, while # language, PsyCap, TA and CSA do it indirectly. Practical implications for BSs and conclusions finalize this study.

The aim of this research is to investigate if a celebrity can be a mediator between two brands so that a negative event happening to one brand can spill over to a completely unrelated brand, which shares with the first brand only the celebrity endorser. Even though celebrity endorsement is a popular marketing strategy and celebrities often endorse multiple brands, so far there has not been any systematic study on this topic. Drawing on Associative Network Theory and the Meaning Transfer Model as theoretical framework, this research finds out that negative publicity about a brand can spill over and thereby not only hurt consumers’ attitude toward the celebrity endorser but also toward a second brand that is endorsed by the same celebrity. An unexpected finding is that celebrities can act as a protective shield for brands by weakening the direct impact of negative publicity.

Since the financial crisis, risk based portfolio allocations have gained a great deal in popularity. This increase in popularity is primarily due to the fact that they make no assumptions as to the expected return of the assets in the portfolio. These portfolios implicitly put risk management at the heart of asset allocation and thus their recent appeal. This paper will serve as a comparison of four well-known risk based portfolio allocation methods; minimum variance, maximum diversification, inverse volatility and equally weighted risk contribution. Empirical backtests will be performed throughout rising interest rate periods from 1953 to 2015. Additionally, I will compare these portfolios to more simple allocation methods, such as equally weighted and a 60/40 asset-allocation mix. This paper will help to answer the question if these portfolios can survive in a rising interest rate environment.

The workforce in organizations today is becoming increasingly diverse. Consequently the role of diversity management is heavily discussed with respect to the question how diversity influences the productivity of a group. Empirical studies show that on one hand there is a potential for increasing productivity but on the other hand it might be as well that conflicts arise due to the heterogeneity of the group. Usually according empirical studies are based on interviews, questionnaires and/or observations. These methods imply that answers are highly selective and filtered. In order to make the invisible visible, to have access to mental models of team members the paper will present an empirical study on the self-understanding of groups based on an innovative research method, called “mind-scripting”.

RESUMO - A presente investigação procura descrever e compreender como a estratégia influencia a liderança e como esta por sua vez interage nos processos de inovação e mudança, em organizações de saúde. Desconhecem-se estudos anteriores, em Portugal, sobre este problema de investigação e da respectiva problemática teórica. Trata-se de um estudo exploratório e descritivo que envolveu 5 organizações de saúde, 4 portuguesas e 1 espanhola, 4 hospitais (dois privados e uma unidade local de saúde). Utilizou-se uma abordagem mista de investigação (qualitativa e quantitativa), que permitiu compreender, através do estudo de caso, como se articulam a estratégia, a liderança e a inovação nessas cinco organizações de saúde. Os resultados do estudo empírico foram provenientes da recolha de dados efectuada através de observação directa e estruturada, entrevistas com actores-chave, documentos em suporte de papel e digital, e ainda inquérito por questionário de auto-resposta a uma amostra (n=165) de actores do line e do staff (Administradores, Directores de Serviço/Departamento, Enfermeiros Chefe e Técnicos Coordenadores) das cinco organizações de saúde. Tanto o modelo de Miles & Snow (estratégia organizacional), como o modelo dos valores contrastantes de Quinn (cultura organizacional e liderança), devidamente adaptados, mostram-se heurísticos e provam poder aplicar-se às organizações de saúde, apesar a sua complexidade e especificidade. Tanto as organizações do sector público como do sector privado e organizações públicas concessionadas (parcerias público privadas) podem ser acompanhadas e monitorizadas nos seus processos de inovação e mudança, associados aos tipos de cultura, liderança ou estratégia organizacionais adoptadas. As organizações de saúde coabitam num continuum, onde o ambiente (quer interno quer externo) e o tempo são factores decisivos que condicionam a estratégia a adoptar. Também aqui, em função da realidade dinâmica e complexa onde a organização se move, não há tipologias puras. Há, sim, uma grande plasticidade e flexibilidade organizacionais. Quanto aos líderes, exercem habitualmente a autoridade formal, pela via da circular normativa. Não são pares (nem primi inter pares), colocam-se por vezes numa posição de superioridade, quando o mais adequado seria a relação de parceria, cooperação e procura de consensos, com todos os colaboradores, afim de serem eles os verdadeiros protagonistas e facilitadores da mudança e das inovações. Como factores facilitadores da inovação e da mudança, encontrámos nas organizações de saúde estudadas o seguinte: facilidade de aprender; visão/missão adequadas; ausência de medo de falhar; e como factores inibidores: falta de articulação entre serviços/departamentos; estrutura organizacional (no sector público muito verticalizada e no sector privado mais horizontalizada); resistência à mudança; falta de tempo; falha no tempo de reacção (o tempo útil para a tomada de decisão é, por vezes, ultrapassado). --------ABSTRACT - The present research seeks to describe and understand how strategy influences leadership and how this in turn interacts in the process of innovation and change in health organizations. Previous studies on these topics are unknown in Portugal, about this research problem and its theoretical problem. This is an exploratory and descriptive study that involved 5 health organizations, 4 Portuguese and 1 Spanish. We used a mixed approach of research (qualitative and quantitative), which enabled us to understand, through case study, how strategy and leadership were articulated with innovation in these five health organizations. The results of the empirical study came from data collection through direct observation, interviews with key actors, documents and survey questionnaire answered by 165 participants of line and staff (Administrators, Medical Directors of Service /Department, Head Nurses and Technical Coordinators) of the five health organizations. Despite their complexity and specificity, both the model of Miles & Snow (organizational strategy) and the model of the Competing Values Framework of Quinn (organizational culture and leadership), suitably adapted, have proven heuristic power and able to be apply to healthcare organizations. Both public sector organizations, private and public organizations licensed (public-private partnerships) can be tracked and monitored in their processes of innovation and change in order to understand its kind of culture, leadership or organizational strategy adopted. Health organizations coexist in a continuum, where the environment (internal and external) and time are key factors which determine the strategy to adopt. Here too depending on the dynamic and complex reality where the organization moves, there are no pure types. There is indeed a great organizational plasticity and flexibility. Leaders usually carry the formal authority by circular normative. They are not pairs (or primi inter pares). Instead they are, sometimes, in a position of superiority, when the best thing is partnership, collaboration, cooperation, building consensus and cooperation with all stakeholders, in order that they are the real protagonists and facilitators of change and innovation. As factors that facilitate innovation and change, we found in health organizations studied, the following: ease of learning; vision / mission appropriate; absence of fear of failure, and as inhibiting factors: lack of coordination between agencies / departments; organizational structure (in the public sector it is too vertical and in the private sector it is more horizontal); resistance to change; lack of time and failure in the reaction time (the time for decision making is sometimes exceeded).

RESUMO - Este estudo tem como objectivo analisar a questão da equidade em saúde e nos cuidados de saúde entre migrantes e não migrantes no contexto da infecção de VIH/SIDA. A equidade em saúde e nos cuidados de saúde são valores de justiça distributiva. Este princípio representa um direito essencial para atingir uma melhor saúde e preocupa-se com a redução das desigualdades injustas em saúde e nos cuidados de saúde entre classes socioeconómicas. Os migrantes podem ser mais propensos a piores níveis de saúde do que os não migrantes devido a desigualdades sociais, na infecção por VIH/SIDA. Há escassez de estudos sobre a equidade em saúde e nos cuidados de saúde entre migrantes e não migrantes, aplicado ao contexto de VIH/SIDA em Portugal. Este é um país recente de migração e apresenta um aumento do número de casos de VIH/SIDA. O desenvolvimento deste estudo é importante para uma melhor compreensão da realidade da equidade em saúde e cuidados de saúde entre migrantes e não migrantes. Para a metodologia deste estudo, foram utilizados os dados da notificação obrigatória dos casos de VIH/SIDA em Portugal. A nacionalidade foi utilizada como aproximação ao estatuto de migrante. Através deste estudo empírico, foi possível constatar que os não nacionais estão sobre-representados nos casos notificados com um aumento no número de casos nos últimos anos. Estes dados sugerem uma iniquidade na saúde e nos cuidados de saúde a favor dos nacionais. Os portugueses representam. ----- ABSTRACT - The main goal of this work was to analyze the equity in health and health care between migrants and non migrants in the HIV/AIDS context. Equity in health and health care is a value of distributive justice. Is a primary right in order to achieve a better health and is concerned with a reduction in unfair inequality in health and health care between socioeconomic classes. Migrants are more susceptible to worse health levels due to socio inequalities, especially in the HIV/AIDS disease, when compared to non migrants. There is a scarcity of studies about health and health care between migrants and non migrants applied to the HIV/AIDS context in Portugal. Migration in Portugal is a recent, but increasing, phenomenon regarding the number of HIV/AIDS cases. This study brings a new overview over the equity of health and health care between migrants and non migrants. The methodology of this study uses mandatory notification of the HIV/AIDS cases detected in Portugal, and the nationality was used as a proxy to the migrant status. This empirical study allowed, detect that non nationals are overrepresented among notified cases, although the number has increased in the last years. This data suggests an inequity in health and health care in favor of nationals. Portuguese people’s represent the majority of notified cases, and the PALOP citizens come in second place.

RESUMO - As Directivas Antecipadas de Vida, são instruções escritas ou orais formuladas por uma pessoa competente relativamente à prestação ou suspensão de cuidados médicos numa eventual situação de doença geradora de incapacidade para decidir ou expressar a sua vontade (Neves et al., 2010). No presente estudo, o problema de investigação centra-se em saber de que forma a construção de um modelo de Directivas Antecipadas de Vida pode contribuir para uma melhor gestão nas unidades de saúde? Para a realização do presente projecto de investigação, foi efectuada uma pesquisa bibliográfica sobre os principais conceitos e estado actual do conhecimento, os quais contribuíram para a definição dos objectivos de investigação empírica: Contribuir para a criação de um corpo de conhecimento no que diz respeito às Directivas Antecipadas de Vida com a elaboração de uma proposta de um modelo de aferição da sua aceitabilidade nas unidades de saúde em Portugal. Identificar os diferentes intervenientes, e qual o seu papel na implementação do modelo proposto. No que se refere ao estudo das Directivas Antecipadas de Vida em Portugal, e em especial nas unidades de saúde, recorreu-se a uma metodologia exploratória e descritiva, para identificar as principais características e trabalhos desenvolvidos na área em investigação. A primeira conclusão reside nas características da própria sociedade, a qual não parece ainda estar suficientemente desperta para a problemática em estudo, não obstante se verificar a existência de iniciativas legislativas recentemente apresentadas. Esta constatação verifica-se igualmente ao nível das unidades prestadoras de cuidados de saúde.

We conduct a systematic study of the impact of European Union (EU) regional policies on regional economic growth that controls for national policies and geographic characteristics. Special care is taken in distinguishing between the impact of EU policies and of national policies on economic growth. Our empirical study tries to answer two different questions. First, is there convergence across EU regions, and if so, do regions converge to a common European steady-state or to a national one? Second, how do European and national policies affect regional growth? We find evidence of regional convergence at the national level but not at the European level. In addition we find that trade openness at the national level is associated with regional convergence while European regional policies contribute, though weakly, to regional convergence. Our results suggest that policies that foster market integration – and convergence to a common steady-state - such as the promotion of labour and capital movements across countries and common regulatory policies are as important for European-wide regional convergence as regional structural funds.

This empirical study aims to explore the impact of increased capital ratio requirements, on the ROE of the Portuguese banking sector. The paper employs both a quantitative- and qualitative approach, with the qualitative approach as the main method of research. The method adopted to conduct the qualitative research was semi structured elite interviews with banking executives. Higher capital requirements decrease the ROE of banks in Portugal, but huge impairments charges, macroeconomic factors and increased costs of deposits are clearly the dominant reasons for the reduced levels of ROE the past years. Among the measures taken to increase capital ratios, reduction of RWAs and non-core assets have been the main focus, but the issuance of CoCos is regarded as the most expensive measure due to high interest payments. However, the CoCos will not have any effect on the ROE in the long term. It is difficult to draw any conclusions on the impact of more equity in the balance sheet on the ROE of Portuguese banks, as many banks currently don’t generate enough money to pay back on shareholders´ investments.
