This paper describes a high-resolution stratigraphic correlation scheme for the early to middle Miocene Lagos-Portimão Formation of central Algarve, southern Portugal. The Lagos Portimão-Formation of central Algarve is a 60 m thick package of horizontally bedded siliciclastics and carbonates. The bryozoan and mollusc dominated biofacies is typical of a shallow marine, warm-temperate climatic environment. We define four stratigraphic marker beds based on biofacies, lithology, and gamma-ray signatures. Marker bed 1 is a reddish shell bed composed predominantly of bivalve shells in various stages of fragmentation. Marker bed 2 is a fossiliferous sandstone / sandy rudstone characterized by bryozoan masses. Marker bed 3 is also a fossiliferous sandstone with abundant larger foraminifers and foliate bryozoans. Marker bed 4 is composed of three distinct layers; two fossiliferous sandstones with an intercalated shell bed. The upper sandstone unit displays thickets of the bryozoan Celleporaria palmate associated with the coral Culizia parasitica. This stratigraphic framework allows to correlate isolated outcrops within the stratigraphic context of the Lagos-Portimão Formation and to establish high resolution chronostratigraphic Sr-isotopic dating.

One of the most common characteristics of Portuguese littoral is the existence of a planed surface (the so-called "littoral platform"), situated at different altitudes and bordered from the inland by a straight relief, strongly contrasting with that planed surface. This one is generally covered with several outcrops of the so-called Plio-Pleistocene deposits. Till the eighties this platform has been interpreted as stable staircase of old marine levels, registering in a passive way the eustatic variations. The rigid step bordering it easterly should be a fossil cliff. However, our study has proved that many of these deposits have a continental origin. These continental deposits have fluvial or alluvial fan facies and they are lying above 40 meters. Marine deposits seem to be quite rare and they only occupy a small western area, beneath the altitude of 40 meters and developing into three different marine levels. There is a rigid step between the two kinds of deposits. We think that the clear geometric separation between these deposits together with this rigid step, indicates a tectonic origin. It seems that the sea must have touched only the western part of this surface, when neotectonic movements lowered it down. There are more evidences for neotectonic movements: a) there are faults (mainly inverse faults) affecting the higher deposits of this littoral platform; b) the same marine level seems to appear at different altitudes, developing an irregular pattern with a general trend dipping from the North to the South.

--------------------------ABSTRACT – The National Health Interview Survey is an instrument of observation in health promoted by the Ministry of Health since 1987, in response to the growing demand for health information, derived from the institution of the National Health Service, as well as its planning and evaluation activities. The National Health Interview Survey has had four editions so far. Data are obtained through the cross-sectional study of probabilistic samples of the Portuguese population, through interviews at home, using valid and stable instruments and methods. Obtained indicators describe the state of health, use of health care and health determinants of the Portuguese population living in familiar dwellings, and are representative at national and regional levels. Besides its usefulness for the study of patterns and trends, this information is important for planning purposes, in the identification of health needs and for the evaluation of the eventual effects of the planned health interventions. The future of the National Health Interview Survey depends on the State’s definition of the needs of epidemiological information and also on its participation in the European system of health surveys. In recent years it has been noticed the progressive disappearance of vernacular sustainable building technologies all over the world mainly due to a strong urban rehabilitation process with modern technologies not compatible with ancient knowledge. Simultaneously new dwellings are needed all over the world and in this sense it was decided to study an ecological and cost-controlled building technology of monolithic walls that can combine the use of low carbon footprint materials, such as earth, fibres and lime using an invasive species: giant reed cane (Arundo Donax). This paper explains the development of this building technology through testing diverse prototypes.
