The main objective of this thesis is to study the developing fields of aquaponics and its potential for aquaculture wastewater treatment and human urine treatment. Aquaponics is a food production system which combines fish farming (aquaculture) with soilless crop farming (hydroponics). In this thesis the concept of aquaponics and the underlying processes are explained. Research on aquaculture wastewater and human urine wastewater is reviewed and its potential application with aquaponic systems is studied. An overview of the different types of aquaponic systems and current research on the field is also presented. A case study was conducted in a farm in Askeröd, Sweden, which involved building two aquaponic systems (System 1 and System 2) and a human urine-based aquaponic system (System 3), with different degrees of component complexity and sizes. The design, building and monitoring of System 1, System 2 and System 3 was documented and described in detail. Four day experiments were conducted which tested the evolution in concentration of Total Ammonia Nitrogen (NH4+/NH3), Nitrite (NO2-), Nitrate (NO3-), Phosphate (PO43-), and Dissolved Oxygen (O2) after an initial nutrient input. The goal was to assess the concentrations of these parameters after four days and compare them with relevant literature examples in the aquaculture industry and in source-separated urine research. Neither of the two aquaponic systems (System 1 and System 2) displayed all of the parameter concentrations in the last day of testing below reference values found in literature. The best performing of the aquaponic systems was the more complex system (System 2) combining the hydroponic Nutrient Film Technique with a Deep Water Culture component, with a Total Ammonia Nitrogen concentration of 0,20 mg/L, a Nitrite concentration of 0,05 mg/L, a Nitrate concentration of 1,00-5,00 mg/L, a Phosphate concentration of <0,02 mg/L and a Dissolved Oxygen concentration of 8,00 mg/L. The human urine-based aquaponic system (System 3) underperformed in achieving the reference concentration values in literature for most parameters. The removal percentage between the higher recorded values after the input addition and the final day of testing was calculated for two literature examples of separated urine treatment and System 3. The system had a removal percentage of 75% for Total Ammonia Nitrogen, 98% for Nitrite, 25% for Nitrate and 50% for Phosphate. These percentages still underperformed literature examples in most of the tested parameters. The results gathered allowed to conclude that while aquaculture wastewater treatment and human urine treatment is possible with aquaponics systems, overall these did not perform as well as some examples found in recirculating aquaculture systems and source-separated urine treatment literature. However, better measuring techniques, longer testing periods and more research is recommended in this field in order to draw an improved representative conclusion.

Evaporative cooling is a traditional strategy to improve summer comfort, which has gained renewed relevance in the context of the transition to a greener economy. Here, the potential for evaporative cooling of two common porous building materials, natural stone and ceramic brick, was evaluated. The work has relevance also to the protection of built heritage becauseevaporation underlies the problems of dampness and salt crystallization, which are so harmful and frequent in this heritage. It was observed that the drying rate of the materials is, in some cases, higher than the evaporation rate of a free water surface. Surface area measurements by a three-dimensional optical technique suggested, as probable cause of this behavior, that surface irregularity gives rise to a large effective surface of evaporation in the material. Surface temperature measurements by infrared were performed afterward during evaporation experiments outside during a hot summer day in Lisbon. Their results indicate that ordinary building materials can be very efficient evaporative media and, thus, may help in achieving higher energy efficiency while maintaining a simultaneous constructive or architectural function.

This study aimed to assess the burden experienced by the caregiver of patients with Schizophrenia, and evaluate its correlation with some demographic characteristics of patients, their caregivers, and the level of expressed emotion in the family. Methods: This descriptive-analytic study was conducted on 172 schizophrenic patients and their primary caregivers selected from the outpatient clinic of a mental hospital in Tehran, Iran using convenience sampling. Caregivers were evaluated with Zarit Burden Interview and Family Questionnaire to assess the burden experienced by the caregivers and the level of expressed emotion in the family, respectively. Data were analyzed using Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis, and Spearman’s tests. Results: The level of burden experienced by the majority of primary caregivers was moderate to severe. The scores obtained in the subscales of emotional over-involvement and critical comments were higher than the cutoff point in 51.7% and 64.5% of caregivers respectively. The results showed that the scores obtained in the two subscales of family questionnaire had a significant, direct correlation with the burden experienced by the caregivers. The level of burden experienced by the caregivers was significantly different between the subgroups of age and marital status of the caregivers, and gender, occupational status and marital status of the patients. Number of family members, home ownership status, time spent by the caregiver with the patient daily, level of family income and duration of disorder significantly affected the level of burden experienced by the caregiver. Conclusion: Based on the results, some demographic factors of the primary caregivers, patients and their family significantly affect the burden experienced by the primary caregivers. Most of the families of patients have high expressed emotions and a significant, direct association exists between the expressed emotions and the burden experienced.

This paper provides an ongoing analysis to one of the biggest ethical and financial scandals in Portugal – Banco Espírito Santo (BES). BES was considered one of the three best banks but it went bankrupted and its employees were transferred to a new entity – Novo Banco. This study was conducted in order to provide an understanding of the employees’ side, which has been forgotten so far. An ethical scandal (sensebreaking) creates ambiguity and uncertainty which triggers new sensemaking processes in order to understand and derive meaning from the new reality. The methodology followed was semi-structured interviews to employees both from the branches and the central services. We found evidence that in organizations with strong identification, unethical behavior has a significant impact on followers’ – the new process of sensemaking is particularly important in this situation because employees suffer more from the disruption of their reality.

W is the biggest electronic goods retailer in Portugal accounting with almost fifty percent of market share in its area. During the last years, many small W suppliers had to close their doors, and many others are in huge troubles. Among the reason for this situation, the huge bargaining power of W in the relationship seems crucial. The focus of the directed research will be in the after sales department where I did an internship from September 2014 to January 2015.

Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) is gaining relevance among financial and non-financial companies but its benefits still are uncertain. This paper aims at investigating the relationship between ERM adoption and firm performance based on a sample of 1130 non-financial companies belonging to the STOXX® index. A content analysis of individual accounts is performed to distinguish adopters, and a regression analysis explores the effect of ERM adoption on firm performance, proxied by Tobin’s Q. The findings suggest that there is a statistical significant positive effect of ERM adoption on firm performance, meaning that firms are benefiting from the implementation of this process.

This work project regards a challenge presented by a Portuguese organization on the retail sector, SONAEMC, which is a case study of how and why fruit shrinkage occurs in the fruit supply chain within their convenience stores. A qualitative research methodology enabled to infer in which stages throughout the chain shrinkage’s causes occur and, to conclude that internal rules for procedures and processes are not always followed and whose compliance would be enough to reduce fruit shrinkage. The key conclusion is that if fruit stock loss is reduced by as much as 15% the category’s profitability could increase about 8%.
