This thesis focuses on the representation of Popular Music in museums by mapping, analyzing, and characterizing its practices in Portugal at the beginning of the 21st century. Now that museums' ability to shape public discourse is acknowledged, the examination of popular music's discourses in museums is of the utmost importance for Ethnomusicology and Popular Music Studies as well as for Museum Studies. The concept of 'heritage' is at the heart of this processes. The study was designed with the aim of moving the exhibiting of popular music in museums forward through a qualitative inquiry of case studies. Data collection involved surveying pop-rock music exhibitions as a qualitative sampling of popular music exhibitions in Portugal from 2007 to 2013. Two of these exhibitions were selected as case studies: No Tempo do Gira-Discos: Um Percurso pela Produção Fonográfica Portuguesa at the Museu da Música in Lisbon in 2007 (also Faculdade de Letras, 2009), and A Magia do Vinil, a Música que Mudou a Sociedade at the Oficina da Cultura in Almada in 2008 (and several other venues, from 2009 to 2013). Two specific domains were observed: popular music exhibitions as instances of museum practice and museum professionals. The first domain encompasses analyzing the types of objects selected for exhibition; the interactive museum practices fostered by the exhibitions; the concepts and narratives used to address popular music discursively, as well as the interpretative practices they allow. The second domain, focuses museum professionals and curators of popular music exhibitions as members of a group, namely their goals, motivations and perspectives. The theoretical frameworks adopted were drawn from the fields of ethnomusicology, popular music studies, and museum studies. The written materials of the exhibitions were subjected of methods of discourse analysis methods. Semi-structured interviews with curators and museum professional were also conducted and analysed. From the museum studies perspective, the study research suggests that the practice adopted by popular music museums largely matches that of conventional museums. From the ethnomusicological and popular music studies stand point, the two case studies reveal two distinct conceptual worlds: the first exhibition, curated by an academic and an independent researcher, points to a mental configuration where popular music is explained through a framework of genres supported by different musical practices. Moreover, it is industry actors such as decision makers and gatekeepers that govern popular music, which implies that the visitors' romantic conception of the musician is to some extent dismantled; the second exhibition, curated by a record collector and specialist, is based on a more conventional process of the everyday historical speech that encodes a mismatch between “good” and “bad music”. Data generated by a survey shows that only one curator, in fact that of my first case study, has an academic background. The backgrounds of all the others are in some way similar to the curator of the second case study. Therefore, I conclude that the second case study best conveys the current practice of exhibiting Popular Music in Portugal.

Land plant evolution required the generation of a new body plan that could resist the harsher and fluctuating environmental conditions found outside of aquatic environments. Unraveling the genetic basis of plant developmental innovations is not only revealing in terms of an evolutionary point of view, but it is also important for understanding the emergence of agronomically important traits. Comparative genetic studies between basal and modern land plants, both at the genome and trancriptome levels, can help in the generation of hypotheses related to the genetic basis of plant evolutionary development.(...)

All life forms need to monitor carbon and energy availability to survive and this is especially true for plants which must integrate unavoidable environmental conditions with metabolism for cellular homeostasis maintenance. Sugars, in the heart of metabolism, are now recognized as crucial signaling molecules that translate those conditions. One such signal is trehalose 6- phosphate (T6P), a phosphorylated dimer of glucose molecules which levels correlate well with those of sucrose (Suc). Central integrators of stress and energy regulation include the conserved plant Snf1-related kinase1 (SnRK1) which respond to low cellular energy levels by up-regulating energy conserving and catabolic metabolism and down-regulating energy consuming processes. In 2009 T6P was shown to inhibit SnRK1. The in vitro inhibition of SnRK1 by T6P was confirmed in vivo through the observation that genes normally induced by SnRK1 were repressed by T6P and vice-versa, promoting growth processes. Este projeto de tese traça uma percepção etnográfica sobre a Oficina Popular de Audiovisual Latino-americano, projeto de aproximação audiovisual a jovens imigrantes latino-americanos residentes na cidade de São Paulo, através do seu acompanhamento e da filmagem partilhada das suas sessões, ocorridas durante os meses de junho, julho, agosto e setembro de 2014, realizadas no espaço do Cineclube latino-americano, sediado no Memorial da América Latina. Parte-se das premissas de que a latinoamericanidade é um imaginário identitário integracionista continuamente inventado e reinventado por vários agentes, ressignificado ininterruptamente por outros imaginários transregionais e locais, e de que entre as muitas vias da sua contínua reinvenção o audiovisual se dá como expressão estética mediadora de impressões locais e transregionais e como potencializador da reflexão coletiva sobre a existência social de cada um e a partilhada. Descreve-se em forma de relatório e de ensaio audiovisual etnográfico, a intersecção de imaginários identitários migrantes e latino-americanos mediados pelo audiovisual, a envolvência dos jovens com os temários da deslocação e da latinoamericanidade através da Oficina, da recepção de filmes latino-americanos contemporâneos e da criação coletiva de dois curtas-metragens.

The goal of this paper is to determine and to quantify how subjective brand valuation is. To do so, we review the different valuation methods and apply the Hirose model to a sample of 20 US companies from the technology sector. Even if the results vary in function of the rankings we choose as a comparison, we may identify the trend that brands are usually overvalued in those rankings. It explains why internally generated goodwill (which includes brand names) is not recognized as an intangible asset in the financial statements.

Nowadays, a significant increase in chronic diseases is observed. Epidemiological studies showed a consistent relationship between the consumption of fruits and vegetables and a reduced risk of certain chronic diseases, namely neurodegenerative disorders. One factor common to these diseases is oxidative stress, which is highly related with proteins, lipids, carbohydrates and nucleic acids damage, leading to cellular dysfunction. Polyphenols, highly abundant in berries and associated products, were described as having antioxidant properties, with beneficial effect in these pathologies. The aims of this study were to evaluate by proteomic analyses the effect of oxidative insult in a neuroblastoma cell line (SK-N-MC) and understand the mechanisms involved in the neuroprotective effects of digested extracts from commercial and wild blackberry (R. vagabundus Samp.). The analysis of the total proteome by two-dimensional electrophoresis revealed that oxidative stress in SK-N-MC cells resulted in altered expression of 12 protein spots from a total of 318. Regarding some redox proteomics alterations, particularly proteins carbonylation and glutathionylation, protein carbonyl alterations during stress suggest that cells produce an early and late response; on the other hand, no glutathionylated polypeptides were detected. Relatively to the incubation of SK-N-MC cells with digested berry extracts, commercial blackberry promotes more changes in protein pattern of these cells than R. vagabundus. From 9 statistically different protein spots of cells incubated with commercial blackberry, only β-tubulin and GRP 78 were until now identified by mass spectrometry. Further studies involving the selection of sub proteomes will be necessary to have a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying the neuroprotective effects of berries.

This paper aims to explore the ways in which standard art history terminology shapes the practice of art history by conditioning the interpretation of specific works of art and, in certain cases, the definition of a research subject (especially where questions of genre and periodization are concerned). Taking as a case study a painting by Georges de La Tour, the Peasant Couple Eating, I will argue that terms such as realism, realistic, naturalistic etc. used for its description and/or interpretation, far from constituting objective stylistic characterizations, shape our perception of the work in question. Bringing the question of social class to the center of the discourse on realism, I propose to show how the social divide between the painter and his subject matter (in this case, the peasants) is internalized in the painting’s style and meaning, and how it is fundamental for the understanding of its intentionality and function.

Como noutros países europeus, também em Portugal a arquitectura popular foi ao longo do século XX objecto privilegiado do interesse de intelectuais de extracção variada, especialmente de arquitectos e antropólogos. Esse interesse começou por se desenvolver entre os arquitectos ligados ao movimento da “Casa Portuguesa”, liderado por Raul Lino. Tendo-se iniciado na viragem do século XIX para o século XX, o movimento da “Casa Portuguesa” estava ainda activo nos anos 1940 e 1950 e foi central tanto nas tentativas do Estado Novo de impor um estilo arquitectónico oficial, como nos modos de representação do cultura popular promovidos pelo regime. As principais ideias defendidas pelo movimento da “Casa Portuguesa” viriam entretanto a ser postas em causa por outras aproximações ao tema, como aquelas que foram propostas: (a) pelo “Inquérito à Habitação Rural”, que teve lugar no início dos anos 1940 e foi conduzido por um grupo de engenheiros agrónomos preocupadas com as condições habitacionais existentes nas áreas rurais portuguesas; (b) pelo “Inquérito à Arquitectura Popular em Portugal” organizado no final dos anos 1950 por um grupo diversificado de arquitectos modernos hostis ao movimento da “Casa Portuguesa”; (c) e, finalmente, pelas pesquisas conduzidas pelo antropólogo Ernesto Veiga de Oliveira e seus colaboradores no Museu de Etnologia entre 1950 e 1960. O objectivo deste livro é analisar as diferentes aproximações à arquitectura popular em cada um dos estudos mencionados como momentos de uma espécie de “guerra cultural” opondo diferentes visões da arquitectura e da cultura populares e distintos modos de tratamento do laço entre cultura popular e identidade nacional durante os anos do Estado Novo. As visões da ruralidade prevalecentes em cada uma destes estudos sobre arquitectura popular, as tensões entre nacionalismo e modernismo na percepção das virtualidades da arquitectura popular, as discussões sobre unidade e diversidade do país no tocante à arquitectura popular, são alguns dos tópicos que serão tratados com mais detalhe.

A antropologia e a arquitectura são disciplinas que se têm frequentado com alguma assiduidade, algumas vezes de forma consciente, outras sem que disso se tenham necessariamente dado conta. Uma das mais assíduas plataformas de encontro entre ambas as disciplinas tem sido fornecida pela arquitectura variavelmente designada de “popular, “vernácula” ou “tradicional”. Por vias diferentes, sobretudo no decurso dos anos 1960, tanto a antropologia como a arquitectura fizeram da arquitectura popular um objecto comum de estudo, analisado de acordo com uma preocupação dominante por formas genuínas e autênticas, marcadas pelo peso da tradição. E por vias diferentes, tanto a antropologia como a arquitectura, retendo embora uma preferência pelo popular, trocaram, a partir dos anos 1980, essas ideias de genuinidade e autenticidade por uma conceptualização do popular enquanto matéria híbrida e impura. Learning from Las Vegas (1977) de Robert Venturi, do lado da arquitectura, e Culturas Híbridas (1989) de Nestor García Canclini, do lado da antropologia, são duas obras marcantes nessa viragem. É a partir delas que esta comunicação se propõe interrogar o modo como no Inquérito à Arquitectura Popular em Portugal se pode surpreender uma tensão entre o popular como autêntico e formas mais misturadas do popular, resolvida então a favor da autenticidade, que se projecta, de forma contraditória, na actualidade.
