European information users: topics from a comparative analysis within the European Union

Purpose – The aim of this article is to present some results from research undertaken into the information behaviour of European Documentation Centre (EDC) users. It will reflect on the practices of a group of 234 users of 55 EDCs covering 21 Member States of the European Union (EU), used to access European information. Design/methodology/approach – In order to collect the data presented here, five questionnaires were sent to users in all the EDCs in Finland, Ireland, Hungary and Portugal. In the remaining EU countries, five questionnaires were sent to two EDCs chosen at random. The questionnaires were sent by post, following telephone contact with the EDC managers. Findings – Factors determining access to information on the European Union and the frequency of this access are identified. The information providers most commonly used to access European information and the information sources considered the most reliable by respondents will also be analysed. Another area of analysis concerns the factors cited by respondents as facilitating access to information on Europe or, conversely, making it more difficult to access. Parallel to this, the aspects of accessing information on EU that are valued most by users will also be assessed. Research limitations/implications – Questionnaires had to be used, as the intention was to cover a very extensive geographical area. However, in opting for closed questions, it is acknowledged that standard responses have been obtained with no scope for capturing the individual circumstances of each respondent, thus making a qualitative approach difficult. Practical implications – The results provide an overall picture of certain aspects of the information behaviour of EDC users. They may serve as a starting point for planning training sessions designed to develop the skills required to search, access, evaluate and apply European information within an academic context. From a broader perspective, they also constitute factors which the European Commission should take into consideration when formulating its information and communication policy. Originality/value – This is the first piece of academic research into the EDCs and their users, which aimed to cover all Members State of the EU.

Master's in autonomous systems: an overview of the robotics curriculum and outcomes at ISEP, Portugal

Robotics research in Portugal is increasing every year, but few students embrace it as one of their first choices for study. Until recently, job offers for engineers were plentiful, and those looking for a degree in science and technology would avoid areas considered to be demanding, like robotics. At the undergraduate level, robotics programs are still competing for a place in the classical engineering graduate curricula. Innovative and dynamic Master’s programs may offer the solution to this gap. The Master’s degree in autonomous systems at the Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP), Porto, Portugal, was designed to provide a solid training in robotics and has been showing interesting results, mainly due to differences in course structure and the context in which students are welcomed to study and work

Projeto de comportamento térmico, certificação energética e ensaios acústicos

O presente relatório incluído na Unidade Curricular de Dissertação/Projeto/Estágio do Mestrado (DIPRE) em Engenharia Civil do Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP) e desenvolvido no âmbito do estágio curricular realizado na empresa Asl & Associados, tem como principais objetivos a minha integração no mercado de trabalho e obtenção de experiência profissional. Neste trabalho, serão abordados temas como as introduções teóricas ao Comportamento Térmico e Acústico de Edifícios de Habitação, estudos de casos práticos como o Projeto de Comportamento Térmico de uma grande intervenção, Certificação Energética de edifícios existentes com base no Regulamento de Desempenho Energético dos Edifícios de Habitação e Ensaios Acústicos de Edifícios de acordo com o Regulamento dos Requisitos Acústicos dos Edifícios. O projeto realizado consistiu no estudo do comportamento térmico do edifício na Avenida Marechal Gomes da Costa nº802, no Porto. Nesse estudo realizou-se a verificação das soluções construtivas, por vezes foram propostas alterações das mesmas de modo a verificar os requisitos impostos pelo REH e foi realizada a emissão do seu pré-certificado. A maior parte do período em que decorreu o estágio na empresa foi preenchida com a realização de certificados energéticos de frações autónomas e de moradias. Para a recolha da informação necessária à sua elaboração, foram efetuadas várias vistorias aos imóveis referidos. Foram também efetuados durante o estágio, ensaios acústicos a edifícios de habitação e comércio e elaborado o respetivo relatório de ensaio.

Topics regarding access to european information institutions: European Union so close and yet so far

From the 1990s, the Parliament, the Council and the European Commission adopted a new approach to disclosure of their working papers. Legal instruments to regulate and allow a fairly broad access to internal working documents of these institutions were created. European institutions also exploited the potential of Information and Communication Technologies, developing new instruments to register the documents produced and make them accessible to the public. The commitment to transparency sought to shows a more credible European government, and reduces the democratic deficit. However, the data analysis regarding access to EU institutions documents shows that general public is still far from direct contact with European bodies.

Information literacy skills of portuguese LIS students: some topics on evaluation of resources credibility

This paper focuses on the Portuguese results from an international survey on LIS students’ information literacy skills. The results’ analysis will be grounded on a literature review on the criteria application to evaluate information and determine the credibility by undergraduate students. The guidelines for the information evaluation, especially regarding credibility aspect, on three main information literacy frameworks will be presented. After an overall presentation of the main results, the analysis of the Portuguese survey results will focus on issues related to information evaluation skills, namely on criteria to assess information credibility and on difficulties to apply them.
