The European Project Semester at ISEP (EPS@ISEP) is a one semester project-based learning programme addressed to engineering students from diverse scientific backgrounds and nationalities. The students, organized in multicultural teams, are challenged to solve real world multidisciplinary problems, accounting for 30 ECTU. The EPS package, although focused on project development (20 ECTU), includes a series of complementary seminars aimed at fostering soft, project-related and engineering transversal skills (10 ECTU). This paper presents the study plan, resources, operation and results of the EPS@ISEP that was created in 2011 to apply the best engineering education practices and promote the internationalization of ISEP. The results show that the EPS@ISEP students acquire during one semester the scientific, technical and soft competences necessary to propose, design and implement a solution for a multidisciplinary problem.

Current engineering education challenges require approaches that promote scientific, technical, design and complementary skills while fostering autonomy, innovation and responsibility. The European Project Semester (EPS) at Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP) (EPS@ISEP) is a one semester project-based learning programme (30 European Credit Transfer Units (ECTU)) for engineering students from diverse scientific backgrounds and nationalities that intends to address these goals. The students, organised in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams, are challenged to solve real multidisciplinary problems during one semester. The EPS package, although on project development (20 ECTU), includes a series of complementary seminars aimed at fostering soft, project-related and engineering transversal skills (10 ECTU). Hence, the students enrolled in this programme improve their transversal skills and learn, together and with the team of supervisors, subjects distinct from their core training. This paper presents the structure, implementation and results of the EPS@ISEP that was created in 2011 to apply the best engineering practices and promote internationalisation and engineering education innovation at ISEP.

A competitividade contemporânea e a globalização impulsionaram as empresas a explorar novos mercados, e a munir-se de recursos distintivos e de valor acrescentado. Para além da expansão dos mercados, Le Boterf (2006) afirma que a solicitação social de confiança tem aumentado, e as empresas têm de ser capazes de proporcionar e garanti-la. Neste sentido a adequação dos Recursos Humanos é imperativo na estratégia das organizações. Este estudo tem como objetivos compreender qual a importância das competências transversais na missão internacional, compreender quais as competências transversais que são mais valorizadas pelos recrutadores e como é feita a sua avaliação. Para conseguir responder a estas questões, emerge a investigação que se segue, com um cariz qualitativo. O método de recolha de dados utilizado foi a entrevista semiestruturada e foram entrevistados dez recrutadores de expatriados. Os resultados sugerem que as competências transversais são caracterÃsticas importantes na missão internacional, uma vez que atuam em fatores que influenciam o sucesso da missão. Das competências mais importantes é enumerado o relacionamento interpessoal, trabalho em equipa, comunicação, capacidade de adaptação e a tolerância à ambiguidade. No final do trabalho são apresentados os resultados da investigação, bem como a sua discussão.

A survey was conducted among students of the Accounting and Administration undergraduate degree at ISCAP – IPP (School of Accounting and Administration of Polytechnic Institute of Porto) in order to understand their perception value of their course Business Simulation (BS). This course is provided in a business environment where students can learn by doing through the management of a company as they were in the real life, but risk-free. The learning tasks are provided in an action-oriented format to maximize the learning process. Students learn by doing a set of tasks every session and have also to produce reports and presentations during the course. BS is part of the undergraduate degree of Accounting and Administration at ISCAP – IPP since the beginning of 2003. The questionnaire we used captured the students’ perception about general and specific skills and competencies considered important for managers and accountants in the real life, about the methodology used in the course, which is totally different from the traditional form, and also about the adequacy of the course included as part of the undergraduate degree. The results showed that students’ perception is highly positive and almost all of them think they improve the skills needed for a job during the course. These results are consistent with [1] Adler and Milne’s research in which the authors found that students agree with the use of action-oriented learning tasks in order to provide them the needed attitudes, skills, and knowledge. The improvement of group skills is the most important issue for students, which can be understandable as BS is the only course from the degree in Accounting and Administration they really have to work in groups.

Serious games are starting to attain a higher role as tools for learning in various contexts, but in particular in areas such as education and training. Due to its characteristics, such as rules, behavior simulation and feedback to the player's actions, serious games provide a favorable learning environment where errors can occur without real life penalty and students get instant feedback from challenges. These challenges are in accordance with the intended objectives and will self-adapt and repeat according to the student’s difficulty level. Through motivating and engaging environments, which serve as base for problem solving and simulation of different situations and contexts, serious games have a great potential to aid players developing professional skills. But, how do we certify the acquired knowledge and skills? With this work we intend to propose a methodology to establish a relationship between the game mechanics of serious games and an array of competences for certification, evaluating the applicability of various aspects in the design and development of games such as the user interfaces and the gameplay, obtaining learning outcomes within the game itself. Through the definition of game mechanics combined with the necessary pedagogical elements, the game will ensure the certification. This paper will present a matrix of generic skills, based on the European Framework of Qualifications, and the definition of the game mechanics necessary for certification on tour guide training context. The certification matrix has as reference axes: skills, knowledge and competencies, which describe what the students should learn, understand and be able to do after they complete the learning process. The guides-interpreters welcome and accompany tourists on trips and visits to places of tourist interest and cultural heritage such as museums, palaces and national monuments, where they provide various information. Tour guide certification requirements include skills and specific knowledge about foreign languages and in the areas of History, Ethnology, Politics, Religion, Geography and Art of the territory where it is inserted. These skills are communication, interpersonal relationships, motivation, organization and management. This certification process aims to validate the skills to plan and conduct guided tours on the territory, demonstrate knowledge appropriate to the context and finally match a good group leader. After defining which competences are to be certified, the next step is to delineate the expected learning outcomes, as well as identify the game mechanics associated with it. The game mechanics, as methods invoked by agents for interaction with the game world, in combination with game elements/objects allows multiple paths through which to explore the game environment and its educational process. Mechanics as achievements, appointments, progression, reward schedules or status, describe how game can be designed to affect players in unprecedented ways. In order for the game to be able to certify tour guides, the design of the training game will incorporate a set of theoretical and practical tasks to acquire skills and knowledge of various transversal themes. For this end, patterns of skills and abilities in acquiring different knowledge will be identified.

Ao profissional de hoje é exigido o domÃnio de competências que transcendem a sua própria função, área ou nÃvel de qualificação, colocando-se assim à s empresas o desafio de identificar e desenvolver as referidas competências, a partir de uma gestão de recursos humanos (GRH) que tenha por base as competências, seja ela uma gestão mais ou menos formalizada. A gestão por competências permite uma gestão estratégica, integrada e coerente dos processos de GRH, na medida em que poderá ser transversal a todos os seus subsistemas e acontece de forma articulada com os objetivos globais do negócio. Neste contexto, emerge a investigação que se segue, um estudo exploratório, de cariz qualitativo que tem como objetivos compreender em profundidade a realidade de diversas empresas em termos de competências transversais valorizadas e as suas práticas de gestão de recursos humanos baseadas em competências. Entrevistamos dez gestores de recursos humanos e administradores de empresas, com um número diferenciado de trabalhadores, representando assim as micro, peque- nas, médias e grandes empresas do norte de Portugal. ConcluÃmos que as competências transversais mais valorizadas pelas empresas são a flexibilidade, relacionamento interpessoal, adaptação à mudança e trabalho em equipa. Esta investigação permitiu ainda compreender que a presença das competências na GRH é caracterizada por uma forte informalidade. Nesta informalidade, as competências transversais estão presentes na contratação, na retenção e nos planos de desenvolvimento, sendo menos frequente a sua utilização em práticas como a gestão e avaliação de desempenho, gestão de carreiras e gestão de benefÃcios e recompensas. Estes resultados representam vantagens para a produção cientÃfica e para as empre- sas, sistemas de ensino, profissionais e estudantes, não só pela importância que as competências e as competências transversais assumem no mercado de hoje e porque fornecem dados atualizados e pistas para investigações futuras.

Economical development has always been connected to the commercial exchanges between people, due to the necessity to suppress their needs. With the increasing growth of international business and more competitive and demanding markets, exportation has become an important first step to internationalisation. Unlike what happened in the past, companies must be aware that the enrolment in the current global market is risky and requires elaborated technical procedures. Internationalisation should not be treated as an isolated event of business management. The first part of this paper aims to understand the export process and fit it in the current stage of international trade, keeping in mind the framework of export under the customs law. Then, we tried to understand how Portuguese companies should face this process in their internationalisation strategy, and what skills organisations must acquire to be able to export competitively in the current scenario of globalisation. The investigation was based on interviews in companies that, through a process of internationalisation by exportation, have implemented themselves strongly in extern markets. This investigation allowed us to analyse the companies’ motivations to become international, as well as the selection criteria for the export destinations. It was also possible to identify the main obstacles to the internationalisation of Portuguese companies. We concluded that companies that choose exportation as a way to become international acquire specific skills that enable them to become competitive in international trade. However, studies have failed to answer the second initial question about whether the measures implemented by Customs potentiate exports.

Os profissionais de saúde mental são o principal instrumento de intervenção nesta área considerada como prioridade de Saúde Pública e estão sujeitos a desgaste emocional e stress, que pode afetar negativamente a sua qualidade de vida. Com este estudo pretende-se avaliar a perceção do estado de saúde e da qualidade de vida relacionada com a saúde nos profissionais de saúde mental. Para responder ao objetivo traçado optou-se por realizar um estudo observacional analÃtico transversal, com abordagem quantitativa. Foi utilizado o SF36v2 como instrumento genérico de avaliação da Qualidade de Vida, que já se encontra validado para a população portuguesa, complementado por um questionário socioprofissional. A recolha de dados decorreu online, de 28 de Janeiro a 30 de Abril de 2013. A amostra foi constituÃda por 201 profissionais de saúde mental de Portugal Continental. Os profissionais de saúde mental que integraram a amostra revelaram pior perceção do estado de saúde e qualidade de vida, quando comparados com os valores de referência para a população portuguesa com nÃvel de instrução alto. Em termos de domÃnios do instrumento, piores resultados foram encontrados para todos eles com exceção do domÃnio Saúde Mental. A avaliação da qualidade de vida dos profissionais de saúde mental possibilita a implementação alterações no funcionamento dos serviços de saúde mental, nomeadamente de programas de gestão de stress, de estratégias de coping e de competências de interação e comunicação entre os profissionais, podendo contribuir para uma melhoria na prestação dos cuidados de saúde aos utentes.

The aim of this paper is the assessment of information literacy skills related to European topics, among a group of 234 users of 55 European Documentation Centres (EDCs), from 21 European Union Member- States. We will present the results of a survey European information. So we will analyse the answers given by the users of the EDCs relating to aspects like the best sources to access trustworthy and impartial Europe information. The factors determining access to information on the EU and the frequency of this access will equally be analysed. The reasons the users gave for the ease or difficulty in accessing European information are also included and pondered on. Parallel to this, we will evaluate the aspects most valued by the users of this kind of information. Our findings on the use of European information available on the Internet, especially the knowledge and making use of databases will be presented. Based on this analysis the paper will demonstrate the need to develop information literacy competencies to identify, use and access European information. Doing so, some potential components of information literacy skills adapted to European information will be introduced.

This paper focuses on the Portuguese results from an international survey on LIS students’ information literacy skills. The results’ analysis will be grounded on a literature review on the criteria application to evaluate information and determine the credibility by undergraduate students. The guidelines for the information evaluation, especially regarding credibility aspect, on three main information literacy frameworks will be presented. After an overall presentation of the main results, the analysis of the Portuguese survey results will focus on issues related to information evaluation skills, namely on criteria to assess information credibility and on difficulties to apply them.

The skills necessary for the formation of a professional devoted to the management of information and knowledge in the context of business organizations will be analysed. Then data collected in two focus group discussion with students from a graduate course in Business Information, from Polytechnic Institute of Porto, Portugal, a will be examined.

The goal of this project, one of the proposals of the EPS@ISEP Spring 2014, was to develop an Aquaponics System. Over recent years Aquaponics systems have received increased attention since they contribute to reduce the strain on resources within 1st and 3rd world countries. Aquaponics is the combination of Hydroponics and Aquaculture, mimicking a natural environment in order to successfully apply and enhance the understanding of natural cycles within an indoor process. Using this knowledge of natural cycles, it was possible to create a system with capabilities similar to that of a natural environment with the support of electronics, enhancing the overall efficiency of the system. The multinational team involved in the development of this system was composed of five students from five countries and fields of study. This paper describes their solution, including the overall design, the technology involved and the benefits it can bring to the current market. The team was able to design and render the Computer Aided Design (CAD) drawings of the prototype, assemble all components, successfully test the electronics and comply with the budget. Furthermore, the designed solution was supported by a product sustainability study and included a specific marketing plan. Last but not least, the students enrolled in this project obtained new multidisciplinary knowledge and increased their team work and cross-cultural communication skills.
