Grounded on Raymond Williams‘s definition of knowable community as a cultural tool to analyse literary texts, the essay reads the texts D.H.Lawrence wrote while travelling in the Mediterranean (Twilight in Italy, Sea and Sardinia and Etruscan Places) as knowable communities, bringing to the discussion the wide importance of literature not only as an object for aesthetic or textual readings, but also as a signifying practice which tells stories of culture. Departing from some considerations regarding the historical development of the relationship between literature and culture, the essay analyses the ways D. H. Lawrence constructed maps of meaning, where the readers, in a dynamic relation with the texts, apprehend experiences, structures and feelings; putting into perspective Williams‘s theory of culture as a whole way of life, it also analyses the ways the author communicates and organizes these experiences, creating a space of communication and operating at different levels of reality: on the one hand, the reality of the whole way of Italian life, and, on the other hand, the reality of the reader who aspires to make sense and to create an interpretative context where all the information is put, and, also, the reality of the writer in the poetic act of writing. To read these travel writings as knowable communities is to understand them as a form that invents a community with no other existence but that of the literary text. The cultural construction we find in these texts is the result of the selection, and interpretation done by D.H.Lawrence, as well as the product of the author‘s enunciative positions, and of his epistemological and ontological filigrees of existence, structured by the conditions of possibility. In the rearticulation of the text, of the writer and of the reader, in a dynamic and shared process of discursive alliances, we understand that Lawrence tells stories of the Mediterranean through his literary art.

The globalization is a process of economical, social, cultural and political integration motivated by the needs generated by a consumption-orientated society and a set of factors that have led to its development, such as reducing transport costs, the technological advancement and the development of communication networks. However, the phenomenon of globalization has been accompanied by increasing levels of insecurity as a result of various types of threats and transnational crimes that the International Community seeks to control and minimize. Throughout this work, we examined how the globalization process has been developing and how nations are able to maintain security levels consistent with their economical status and social development, without disturbing the normal course of organizations’ economical activity and the well-being of people. From the investigation developed we concluded that, besides the confirmation that economic integration and the opening of markets have influence on internal consumption, market globalization and migrations have been causing modifications in the consumption habits. We also concluded that the security measures implemented by States or by the International Community affect international trade, but do not imply disproportionate costs or significant delays in transactions. Likewise, we concluded that the control measures implemented in international trade are sufficient to ensure the safety of the people and nations, enabling us to confirm two of the three conjectures raised in this study.

The IEEE 802.15.4 protocol proposes a flexible communication solution for Low-Rate Wireless Personal Area Networks (LR-WPAN) including wireless sensor networks (WSNs). It presents the advantage to fit different requirements of potential applications by adequately setting its parameters. When in beaconenabled mode, the protocol can provide timeliness guarantees by using its Guaranteed Time Slot (GTS) mechanism. However, power-efficiency and timeliness guarantees are often two antagonistic requirements in wireless sensor networks. The purpose of this paper is to analyze and propose a methodology for setting the relevant parameters of IEEE 802.15.4-compliant WSNs that takes into account a proper trade-off between power-efficiency and delay bound guarantees. First, we propose two accurate models of service curves for a GTS allocation as a function of the IEEE 802.15.4 parameters, using Network Calculus formalism. We then evaluate the delay bound guaranteed by a GTS allocation and express it as a function of the duty cycle. Based on the relation between the delay requirement and the duty cycle, we propose a power-efficient superframe selection method that simultaneously reduces power consumption and enables meeting the delay requirements of real-time flows allocating GTSs. The results of this work may pave the way for a powerefficient management of the GTS mechanism in an IEEE 802.15.4 cluster.

Neste trabalho, começamos por focar a nossa atenção nas perturbações da linguagem. Assim, fazemos uma abordagem à literatura existente sobre estas perturbações, analisando os conceitos de comunicação, linguagem e fala. Com base neste enquadramento teórico, consideramos importante conhecer que impacto poderá ter a utilização de software educativo nos alunos com perturbações da linguagem, assim como determinar que fatores favorecem e condicionam essa utilização. A proposta para o uso de software educativo, numa perspetiva de aprendizagem, desenvolve-se a partir da utilização das Tecnologias da Comunicação e Informação (TIC) ao nível do ensino e em particular da Educação Especial (EE), considerando questões como: adequação dos conteúdos à realidade do educando, aplicação de novas metodologias que incentivem a participação ativa do aluno no processo de aprendizagem e redefinição dos objetivos a fim de ampliar o desenvolvimento do indivíduo para a sua inserção na sociedade moderna. É assim nossa intenção perceber se o uso das TIC, nomeadamente de softwares educativos, poderá apresentar resultados significativos no processo de construção de conhecimento, proporcionando condições para o desenvolvimento cognitivo, visando a motivação, a autonomia e a especificidade de cada aluno. Para tal, criamos uma plataforma interativa passível de ser utilizada por professores, profissionais e até mesmo pais de crianças com estas perturbações. Assim, este projeto parte de um estudo de natureza qualitativa, investigando, através do estudo de caso, se a utilização do software educativo “Talky – A Destrava Língua” será um instrumento capaz de minimizar ou até mesmo colmatar as dificuldades inerentes às crianças portadoras destas perturbações.
