Ao longo dos últimos anos tem-se verificado um desenvolvimento significativo em soluções Internet Protocol Television (IPTV), com vista a ser implementadas em diversos sectores, incluindo o mercado hoteleiro. O presente trabalho desenvolveu-se em torno de um produto específico ligado a esta área, o sistema de entretenimento NiVo. Este produto foi criado pela Nonius Software, empresa associada ao ramo das telecomunicações, que continua a expandi-lo, conferindo-lhe novas características e melhoramentos. O objectivo principal do projecto consiste no desenvolvimento de uma aplicação simuladora dos temas gráficos do sistema NiVo, com a finalidade de facilitar o processo de criação dos mesmos. Esta aplicação pretende ter uma apresentação e interactividade o mais próxima possível do sistema real, permitindo realizar o teste/validação de um tema, sem a necessidade de utilização de equipamento que compõe o sistema NiVo. Um segundo objectivo baseia-se no desenvolvimento de uma aplicação de ajuda à composição de temas, evitando que estes sejam desenvolvidos manualmente, sem qualquer tipo de suporte, o que pode resultar em erros. Para o cumprimento dos objectivos estabelecidos, focando-se no desenvolvimento do simulador, utilizou-se a tecnologia Flash, sendo esta muito utilizada para a criação de animações interactivas. Desta forma, a aplicação desenvolvida tira partido das vantagens fornecidas por esta tecnologia.

The objective of this article is to provide additional knowledge to the discussion of long-term memory, leaning over the behavior of the main Portuguese stock index. The first four moments are calculated using time windows of increasing size and sliding time windows of fixed size equal to 50 days and suggest that daily returns are non-ergodic and non-stationary. Seeming that the series is best described by a fractional Brownian motion approach, we use the rescaled-range analysis (R/S) and the detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA). The findings indicate evidence of long term memory in the form of persistence. This evidence of fractal structure suggests that the market is subject to greater predictability and contradicts the efficient market hypothesis in its weak form. This raises issues regarding theoretical modeling of asset pricing. In addition, we carried out a more localized (in time) study to identify the evolution of the degree of long-term dependency over time using windows 200-days and 400-days. The results show a switching feature in the index, from persistent to anti-persistent, quite evident from 2010.

In this paper we will talk about a math project submitted to the Lifelong Learning Programme. European higher education needs a reform in order to play its full role in the Europe of Knowledge. Modernisation of higher education is necessary in the areas of curricula (Bologna process), funding and governance so that higher education institutions can face the challenges posed by globalisation and contribute more effectively to the training and retraining of the European workforce. On the other hand Mathematics is an essential component of all educational systems. Mathematical literacy is being scrutinized in assessment efforts such as the OCDE Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). This showed a low level in Europe. Due to the Bologna Process, which brought several didactical implications for Higher Education (HE) institutions, there is the need of lifelong learning. This evolution is in conflict with the earlier mentioned lack of competencies on basic sciences, such as Mathematics. Forced by this duality, efforts are combined to share expertise in the Math field and the integration of pedagogical methodologies becomes a necessity. Thus, several European countries have proposed an International Project to the Lifelong Learning Programme, Action ERASMUS Modernisation of Higher Education, to make institutions more attractive and more responsive to the needs of the labour market, citizens and society at large. One of the main goals of the project is to attract students to math through high-quality instructional units in an understandable, exciting and attractive way.

The dominant discourse in education and training policies, at the turn of the millennium, was on lifelong learning (LLL) in the context of a knowledge-based society. As Green points (2002, pp. 611-612) several factors contribute to this global trend: The demographic change: In most advanced countries, the average age of the population is increasing, as people live longer; The effects of globalisation: Including both economic restructuring and cultural change which have impacts on the world of education; Global economic restructuring: Which causes, for example, a more intense demand for a higher order of skills; the intensified economic competition, forcing a wave of restructuring and creating enormous pressure to train and retrain the workforce In parallel, the “significance of the international division of labour cannot be underestimated for higher education”, as pointed out by Jarvis (1999, p. 250). This author goes on to argue that globalisation has exacerbated differentiation in the labour market, with the First World converting faster to a knowledge economy and a service society, while a great deal of the actual manufacturing is done elsewhere.

With the restructuring of the energy sector in industrialized countries there is an increased complexity in market players’ interactions along with emerging problems and new issues to be addressed. Decision support tools that facilitate the study and understanding of these markets are extremely useful to provide players with competitive advantage. In this context arises MASCEM, a multi-agent simulator for competitive electricity markets. It is essential to reinforce MASCEM with the ability to recreate electricity markets reality in the fullest possible extent, making it able to simulate as many types of markets models and players as possible. This paper presents the development of the Balancing Market in MASCEM. A key module to the study of competitive electricity markets, as it has well defined and distinct characteristics previously implemented.

With the electricity market liberalization, distribution and retail companies are looking for better market strategies based on adequate information upon the consumption patterns of its electricity customers. In this environment all consumers are free to choose their electricity supplier. A fair insight on the customer´s behaviour will permit the definition of specific contract aspects based on the different consumption patterns. In this paper Data Mining (DM) techniques are applied to electricity consumption data from a utility client’s database. To form the different customer´s classes, and find a set of representative consumption patterns, we have used the Two-Step algorithm which is a hierarchical clustering algorithm. Each consumer class will be represented by its load profile resulting from the clustering operation. Next, to characterize each consumer class a classification model will be constructed with the C5.0 classification algorithm.

Decision support tools that facilitate the study and understanding of these markets become extremely useful to provide players with competitive advantage. In this context arises MASCEM, a multi-agent system for simulating competitive electricity markets. To provide MASCEM with the capacity to recreate the electricity markets reality in the fullest possible extent, it is essential to make it able to simulate as many market models and player types as possible. This paper presents the development of the Complex Market in MASCEM. This module is fundamental to study competitive electricity markets, as it exhibits different characteristics from the already implemented market types.

We study market reaction to the announcements of the selected country hosting the Summer and Winter Olympic Games, the World Football Cup, the European Football Cup and World and Specialized Exhibitions. We generalize previous results analyzing a large number and different types of mega-events, evaluate the effects for winning and losing countries, investigate the determinants of the observed market reaction and control for the ex ante probability of a country being a successful bidder. Average abnormal returns measured at the announcement date and around the event are not significantly different from zero. Further, we find no evidence supporting that industries, that a priori were more likely to extract direct benefits from the event, observe positive significant effects. Yet, when we control for anticipation, the stock price reactions around the announcements are significant.

A Nonius Software é uma empresa nacional de engenharia na área de telecomunicações, que se dedica ao desenvolvimento de soluções para a gestão de sistemas informáticos e de entretenimento, tendo como finalidade o mercado mundial hoteleiro e hospitalar. A solução de TV interactiva da Nonius oferece uma experiência única ao hóspede, ao disponibilizar várias opções de entretenimento e acesso a conteúdos de elevada qualidade e interesse. O hóspede tem acesso a canais de TV, aluguer de filmes, Internet, jogos, informações, promoções e compras na TV. O objectivo principal desta dissertação foi implementar alguns serviços de entretenimento numa televisão LG Pro: Centric. Este equipamento tem como principal vantagem o facto de conter a set-top-box inserida dentro da própria televisão. Em termos arquitectónicos, o sistema Nonius TV tem dois elementos fundamentais: o backend, responsável pelo processamento e tratamento da informação centralizada e o frontend instalado nos dispositivos com os quais o hóspede contacta directamente. Uma parte significativa do trabalho desenvolvido centrou-se na implementação de funcionalidades no backend. Foram, no entanto, também desenvolvidas algumas funcionalidades nos serviços de frontend. Para o cumprimento dos objectivos estabelecidos, foi utilizada a tecnologia FLASH, tendo como linguagem de programação a segunda versão do ActionScript. Relativamente ao desenvolvimento de backend são utilizados o PHP e o JavaScript.

The electricity market restructuring, and its worldwide evolution into regional and even continental scales, along with the increasing necessity for an adequate integration of renewable energy sources, is resulting in a rising complexity in power systems operation. Several power system simulators have been developed in recent years with the purpose of helping operators, regulators, and involved players to understand and deal with this complex and constantly changing environment. The main contribution of this paper is given by the integration of several electricity market and power system models, respecting to the reality of different countries. This integration is done through the development of an upper ontology which integrates the essential concepts necessary to interpret all the available information. The continuous development of Multi-Agent System for Competitive Electricity Markets platform provides the means for the exemplification of the usefulness of this ontology. A case study using the proposed multi-agent platform is presented, considering a scenario based on real data that simulates the European Electricity Market environment, and comparing its performance using different market mechanisms. The main goal is to demonstrate the advantages that the integration of various market models and simulation platforms have for the study of the electricity markets’ evolution.

Speech interfaces for Assistive Technologies are not common and are usually replaced by others. The market they are targeting is not considered attractive and speech technologies are still not well spread. Industry still thinks they present some performance risks, especially Speech Recognition systems. As speech is the most elemental and natural way for communication, it has strong potential for enhancing inclusion and quality of life for broader groups of users with special needs, such as people with cerebral palsy and elderly staying at their homes. This work is a position paper in which the authors argue for the need to make speech become the basic interface in assistive technologies. Among the main arguments, we can state: speech is the easiest way to interact with machines; there is a growing market for embedded speech in assistive technologies, since the number of disabled and elderly people is expanding; speech technology is already mature to be used but needs adaptation to people with special needs; there is still a lot of R&D to be done in this area, especially when thinking about the Portuguese market. The main challenges are presented and future directions are proposed.

A liderança e a motivação são aspetos essenciais no alcance do sucesso das organizações. Os líderes alcançaram um papel de destaque nas organizações, quer através da tomada de decisões estratégicas, quer na motivação dos colaboradores. Os conceitos e o entendimento da liderança têm vindo a mudar no decurso do tempo. E sugere que, provavelmente, a liderança adquirirá novos significados e será alvo de novas abordagens no futuro. Porque as sociedades, as organizações e as pessoas mudam, é presumível que novas janelas de compreensão venham a ser abertas. Atendendo a que vivemos numa era de globalização, em que a tecnologia, as estratégias e a estrutura das organizações são quase uniformes, a verdadeira vantagem competitiva só poderá surgir das competências dos recursos humanos. Os líderes também alcançaram um papel de destaque nas organizações, quer através da tomada de decisões estratégicas, quer na motivação dos colaboradores, motivação esta que é o motor que potencia capacidade para que os colaboradores sejam persistentes visando alcançar os seus objetivos. Na indústria hoteleira, objeto de estudo da presente investigação, um dos desafios permanentes é proporcionar níveis consistentes de qualidade de serviço. Esse segmento é profundamente afetado pelo comportamento dos seus líderes e das suas características pessoais e especialmente pela maneira como influenciam os seus colaboradores a alcançarem um resultado. Sendo assim, a presente dissertação tem como objetivo geral conhecer, identificar e analisar os estilos e comportamentos de liderança praticados pelos líderes dos vários departamentos de uma unidade hoteleira do Grande Porto. Para isso, recorremos ao estudo de caso, que inclui as metodologias quantitativa e qualitativa, por forma a identificar o(s) estilo(s) de liderança presente(s) no hotel. As conclusões que resultaram da aplicação das entrevistas e do inquérito por questionário mostram que o líder atual da unidade hoteleira em estudo é o líder democrático.
