Balanço da utilização da versão portuguesa do Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI)

Sendo as queixas da existência de acufenos um motivo frequente de procura da consulta de ORL (Otorrinolaringologia), e sendo frequente encontrar na literatura referências à depressão, à ansiedade, entre outras dimensões psicopatológicas, associadas a essas queixas, pretendemos com o nosso trabalho verificar a existência de eventuais correlações entre essas dimensões e a existência de acufenos. Para tal, utilizamos a escala de avaliação psicológica BSI (Brief Syntoms Inventory), que avalia nove dimensões psicológicas, tendo igualmente efectuado uma avaliação audiométrica nos indivíduos com queixas de acufenos. Estes indivíduos frequentavam a consulta de ORL de três hospitais, e apresentavam como queixa principal os acufenos. Os resultados obtidos nesses indivíduos, foram comparados com os resultados de um grupo de controlo. Dos resultados obtidos, é de destacar o facto de os elementos do sexo feminino com queixas de acufenos, apresentarem valores significativamente mais elevados para as dimensões de somatização e ansiedade fóbica. Relativamente ao nível de audição não foram encontradas diferenças significativas entre os diferentes níveis considerados e as mesmas dimensões. Quando comparamos os resultadosobtidos nas referidas dimensões entre o grupo de pacientes com acufenos e o grupo de controle, é de destacar o facto de existirem diferenças significativas para seis das nove dimensões avaliadas pela escala usada, o que vem confirmar os resultados encontrados na literatura, evidenciando o interesse do recurso a escalas de avaliação psicológica para referenciar o paciente, e abrir portas a estudos mais aprofundados nesta área.

On a generalized Laguerre operational matrix of fractional integration

A new operationalmatrix of fractional integration of arbitrary order for generalized Laguerre polynomials is derived.The fractional integration is described in the Riemann-Liouville sense.This operational matrix is applied together with generalized Laguerre tau method for solving general linearmultitermfractional differential equations (FDEs).Themethod has the advantage of obtaining the solution in terms of the generalized Laguerre parameter. In addition, only a small dimension of generalized Laguerre operational matrix is needed to obtain a satisfactory result. Illustrative examples reveal that the proposedmethod is very effective and convenient for linear multiterm FDEs on a semi-infinite interval.

Operational modal monitoring of ancient structures using wireless technology

Operational Modal Analysis is currently applied in structural dynamic monitoring studies using conventional wired based sensors and data acquisition platforms. This approach, however, becomes inadequate in cases where the tests are performed in ancient structures with esthetic concerns or in others, where the use of wires greatly impacts the monitoring system cost and creates difficulties in the maintenance and deployment of data acquisition platforms. In these cases, the use of sensor platforms based on wireless and MEMS would clearly benefit these applications. This work presents a first attempt to apply this wireless technology to the structural monitoring of historical masonry constructions in the context of operational modal analysis. Commercial WSN platforms were used to study one laboratory specimen and one of the structural elements of a XV century building in Portugal. Results showed that in comparison to the conventional wired sensors, wireless platforms have poor performance in respect to the acceleration time series recorded and the detection of modal shapes. However, for frequency detection issues, reliable results were obtained, especially when random excitation was used as noise source.

Gestão de stocks aplicada a uma instituição de saúde privada

A gestão de stocks tem-se tornado uma ferramenta fundamental na racionalização de custos das empresas permitindo uma maior eficiência operacional. Os modelos de gestão de stocks procuram ajudar a determinar as quantidades a encomendar e quando encomendar, com um custo total de aprovisionamento mínimo. Este trabalho visa o estudo da gestão de stocks, dos modelos existentes e a aplicação de um deles num prestador de saúde, em particular, na área da imagiologia. Neste estudo optou-se por efectuar a classificação ABC dos produtos e posteriormente procurou-se definir o modelo de gestão de stocks que melhor se adeqúe à realidade empresarial em estudo de modo a manter o nível de stock correcto associado a um menor custo. Optou-se pelo modelo de revisão periódica de stocks que permite efectuar a encomenda sempre com o mesmo intervalo de tempo e efectuar ajustes nas quantidades necessárias. Com base nos dados fornecido efectuou-se uma previsão da procura e assim definiram-se as quantidades a encomendar, bem como o stock de segurança necessário. Implementaram-se as quantidades e o stock de segurança e efectuou-se uma avaliação dos resultados obtidos e analisou-se o impacto da gestão de stocks no prestador de saúde.

Psychometric Properties of the Portuguese Version of the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory Short Form Among Divorced Adults

The aim of this study was to develop and validate a Portuguese version of the Short Form of the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI-SF). Using an online convenience sample of Portuguese divorced adults (N = 482), we confirmed the oblique five-factor structure of the PTGI-SF by confirmatory factor analysis. The results demonstrated the measurement invariance across divorce initiator status groups. Total score and factors of PTGI-SF showed good internal consistency, with the exception of the New Possibilities factor, which revealed an acceptable reliability. The Portuguese PTGI-SF showed a satisfactory convergent validity. In terms of discriminant validity, posttraumatic growth assessed by the Portuguese PTGI-SF was a distinct factor from posttraumatic psychological adjustment. These preliminary findings suggest the cultural adaptation and also psychometric properties of the present Portuguese PTGI-SF to measure posttraumatic growth after personal crisis.

Criteria for the selection of foster families and monitoring of placements.: Comparative study of the application of the Casey Foster Applicant Inventory-Applicant Version (CFAI-A)

Based on a literature review, this article frames different stages of the foster care process, identifying a set of standardized measures in the American and Portuguese contexts which, if implemented, could contribute towards higher levels of foster success. The article continues with the presentation of a comparative study, based on the application of the Casey Foster Applicant Inventory-Applicant Version (CFAI-A) questionnaire, in the aforementioned contexts. Taking a comparative analyses of CFAI-A's psychometric characteristics in four different samples as a starting point, one discovered that despite the fact that the questionnaire was adapted to Portuguese reality, it kept the quality values presented on the American samples. It specifically shows significant values regarding reliability and validity. This questionnaire, which aims to assess the potential of foster families, also supports the technical staff's decision making process regarding the monitoring and support of foster families, while it also promotes a better decision in the placement process towards the child's integration and development.

A Review of Operational Matrices and Spectral Techniques for Fractional Calculus

Recently, operational matrices were adapted for solving several kinds of fractional differential equations (FDEs). The use of numerical techniques in conjunction with operational matrices of some orthogonal polynomials, for the solution of FDEs on finite and infinite intervals, produced highly accurate solutions for such equations. This article discusses spectral techniques based on operational matrices of fractional derivatives and integrals for solving several kinds of linear and nonlinear FDEs. More precisely, we present the operational matrices of fractional derivatives and integrals, for several polynomials on bounded domains, such as the Legendre, Chebyshev, Jacobi and Bernstein polynomials, and we use them with different spectral techniques for solving the aforementioned equations on bounded domains. The operational matrices of fractional derivatives and integrals are also presented for orthogonal Laguerre and modified generalized Laguerre polynomials, and their use with numerical techniques for solving FDEs on a semi-infinite interval is discussed. Several examples are presented to illustrate the numerical and theoretical properties of various spectral techniques for solving FDEs on finite and semi-infinite intervals.
