Climbing robots: a survey of technologies and applications

The interest in the development of climbing robots is growing rapidly. Motivations are typically to increase the operation efficiency by obviating the costly assembly of scaffolding or to protect human health and safety in hazardous tasks. Climbing robots are starting to be developed for applications ranging from cleaning to inspection of difficult to reach constructions. These robots should be capable of travelling on different types of surfaces, with varying inclinations, such as floors, walls, ceilings, and to walk between such surfaces. Furthermore, these machines should be capable of adapting and reconfiguring for various environment conditions and to be self-contained. Regarding the adhesion to the surface, they should be able to produce a secure gripping force using a light-weight mechanism. This paper presents a survey of different applications and technologies proposed for the implementation of climbing robots.

A survey of wireless technologies coexistence in WBAN: analysis and open research issues

Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) is the most convenient, cost-effective, accurate, and non-invasive technology for e-health monitoring. The performance of WBAN may be disturbed when coexisting with other wireless networks. Accordingly, this paper provides a comprehensive study and in-depth analysis of coexistence issues and interference mitigation solutions in WBAN technologies. A thorough survey of state-of-the art research in WBAN coexistence issues is conducted. The survey classified, discussed, and compared the studies according to the parameters used to analyze the coexistence problem. Solutions suggested by the studies are then classified according to the followed techniques and concomitant shortcomings are identified. Moreover, the coexistence problem in WBAN technologies is mathematically analyzed and formulas are derived for the probability of successful channel access for different wireless technologies with the coexistence of an interfering network. Finally, extensive simulations are conducted using OPNET with several real-life scenarios to evaluate the impact of coexistence interference on different WBAN technologies. In particular, three main WBAN wireless technologies are considered: IEEE 802.15.6, IEEE 802.15.4, and low-power WiFi. The mathematical analysis and the simulation results are discussed and the impact of interfering network on the different wireless technologies is compared and analyzed. The results show that an interfering network (e.g., standard WiFi) has an impact on the performance of WBAN and may disrupt its operation. In addition, using low-power WiFi for WBANs is investigated and proved to be a feasible option compared to other wireless technologies.

Smart Grid Communication Technologies in the Brazilian Electrical Sector

Intelligent electrical grids can be considered as the next generation of electrical energy transportation. The enormous potential leads to worldwide focus of research on the technology of smart grids. This paper aims to present a review of the Brazilian electricity sector in context with the integration of communication technologies for smart grids. The work gives an overview of the generation, transmission and distribution of electrical energy in the Brazil and a brief summary of the current electricity market. Smart grid technologies are introduced and the requirements for the Brazilian power system are pointed out. Various technologies for communication within an intelligent network are presented and their characteristics, advantages and disadvantages are compared to the Brazilian conditions. In addition, a summary is given of current pilot projects for Smart Grid technologies within Brazil, as well as a presentation of individual selected projects.

The Digital Textbook: Methodological and Didactic Challenges for Primary School

The potentialities of ICT in education bring about changes in the teaching and learning methodologies, in the places where you learn and in the way you learn. This demands a reflection not only on the ways of learning, but also on the support resources, so that learning can take place and, of course, it is indispensable to understand the teachers’ answer to the digital challenges. Thus, the purpose of this analysis is to reflect about technological trends in an educational context and their underlying models by analyzing the role played by digital textbooks in Portugal in an innovating context. This way, we intend to contribute to an educational policy as we plan to relate the teachers’ training to the increasing development of the digital textbooks and we also intend to contribute to the understanding of a didactic resource which is closely related to the learning processes which resort to advanced technology.

Os Dez Princípios de uma Boa Prática com TIC

A importância que actualmente se concede à integração das novas tecnologias na educação impõe uma reflexão sobre as práticas pedagógicas hoje vividas nas nossas escolas e a sua repercussão na educação. Este estudo tem como propósito compreender os efeitos das boas práticas e apresentar os 10 princípios de boas práticas com TIC escorados num estudo realizado com professores do 1º Ciclo do Ensino Básico na região do grande Porto. Esperamos assim contribuir para uma reflexão crítica sobre a inclusão das TIC e realçar o seu potencial na educação.

Formar para Inovar, Inovar Formando com TIC

O futuro exige mudanças no paradigma da educação para que se preparem as gerações atuais e futuras para um mundo incerto, tecnológico e global. Exige, assim, responsabilidades acrescidas a todos os atores da educação no sentido de uma resposta eficaz à renovação da escola. Apresenta-se, neste artigo, uma reflexão crítica que permite compreender a inclusão das TIC discutindo os resultados de um estudo que envolveu 1300 professores na região do Porto e que aborda três dimensões fundamentais: disponibilidade de recursos TIC, formação de professores e boas práticas docentes. Pretende-se, através da interação destes vetores, contribuir para a reedificação de novas políticas que promovam a inclusão das TIC, a formação de professores em TIC e para a disseminação de boas práticas, no sentido de uma visão renovada da construção de aprendizagens e de um novo modo de se viver a escola.

A cidadania e as TIC: projeto no 1º CEB

A escola, enquanto comunidade, imprime possibilidades de relações plurais que superam os programas curriculares e contribuem para o desenvolvimento integral dos alunos. Assim, o presente artigo reflete o modo como as TIC podem modificar contextos e motivações ao nível dos alunos, do professor, da escola e dos encarregados de educação. Neste contexto, alunas da formação inicial de professores implementaram o projeto “Vokimania” em contexto real e, espera-se, que a disseminação do mesmo possa instigar outros contextos educativos à realização de boas práticas com recursos tecnológicos e, deste modo, contribuir para a renovação das práticas pedagógicas.

O retrato da integração das TIC no 1º ciclo: Que perspectivas?

Durante a última década fizeram-se diversos investimentos que impulsionaram mudanças no apetrechamento de equipamento informático nas escolas e na formação de professores. Parece-nos haver necessidade de entender em que estádio de desenvolvimento se encontram os professores no âmbito das TIC, que tipo de ferramentas utilizam, com que frequência e que resultados verificam nas práticas pedagógicas. Esta investigação envolveu cerca de 1300 professores a leccionarem em escolas públicas e privadas na região do grande Porto e tem como propósito reflectir sobre a integração das TIC na educação podendo contribuir no apoio à decisão em futuras iniciativas.

Tecnologias da informação e comunicação e liderança: a realidade da e-liderança

As tecnologias de informação e comunicação (TIC) permitiram à liderança tradicional assumir novos contornos. O uso destas TIC levou ao surgimento de um novo paradigma na liderança, a e-liderança. Contudo, não se pode chamar à liderança com apoio nas TIC e-liderança. Na e-liderança todos os processos de liderar decorrem com recurso às TIC e apenas excepcionalmente há recurso a encontros face a face (f2f). Enquanto que, na liderança tradicional, as TIC possam, de forma opcional ser utilizadas, tornando o processo mais ágil, na e-liderança são fulcrais e, sem elas, a mesma não existe. Semelhante dependência obriga a que haja alterações em todas as facetas da liderança, como sejam as características do líder, da equipa e mesmo do tipo de relação que há entre ambos. O líder, para ser e-líder, tem de assumir novos papéis, estar pronto para novos desafios e aceitar as novas responsabilidades que surgem com esta nova forma de liderar. Para além de influenciar todos os aspectos mencionados, as TIC também alteram a forma como se cria e gere a informação e o conhecimento dentro das equipas, agora e-equipas. Primeiramente, e devido à necessidade de haver uma ferramenta que sirva de canal de comunicação entre emissor e receptor, surge uma diferença “física”. Depois, e devido à dificuldade na criação de confiança entre os elementos da e-equipa, podem surgir impedimentos na partilha de conhecimento. Recorrendo a um estudo verificou-se que apenas 35% das empresas inquiridas possuem equipas virtuais. Claramente, a existência de equipas virtuais dentro das empresas dependerá, em certo modo, da sua dimensão, da sua maturidade, assim como do mercado em que se inserem.

TEC4SEA - A Modular Platform for Research, Test and Validation of Technologies Supporting a Sustainable Blue Economy

This paper presents the TEC4SEA research infrastructure created in Portugal to support research, development, and validation of marine technologies. It is a multidisciplinary open platform, capable of supporting research, development, and test of marine robotics, telecommunications, and sensing technologies for monitoring and operating in the ocean environment. Due to the installed research facilities and its privileged geographic location, it allows fast access to deep sea, and can support multidisciplinary research, enabling full validation and evaluation of technological solutions designed for the ocean environment. It is a vertically integrated infrastructure, in the sense that it possesses a set of skills and resources which range from pure conceptual research to field deployment missions, with strong industrial and logistic capacities in the middle tier of prototype production. TEC4SEA is open to the entire scientific and enterprise community, with a free access policy for researchers affiliated with the research units that ensure its maintenance and sustainability. The paper describes the infrastructure in detail, and discusses associated research programs, providing a strategic vision for deep sea research initiatives, within the context of both the Portuguese National Ocean Strategy and European Strategy frameworks.
