We model the cytoskeleton as a fractal network by identifying each segment with a simple Kelvin-Voigt element with a well defined equilibrium length. The final structure retains the elastic characteristics of a solid or a gel, which may support stress, without relaxing. By considering a very simple regular self-similar structure of segments in series and in parallel, in one, two, or three dimensions, we are able to express the viscoelasticity of the network as an effective generalized Kelvin-Voigt model with a power law spectrum of retardation times L similar to tau(alpha). We relate the parameter alpha with the fractal dimension of the gel. In some regimes ( 0 < alpha < 1), we recover the weak power law behaviors of the elastic and viscous moduli with the angular frequencies G' similar to G" similar to w(alpha) that occur in a variety of soft materials, including living cells. In other regimes, we find different power laws for G' and G".

O papel crucial da escola na sociedade e o exercício da atividade profissional como docente, com um olhar atento sobre o traçar das políticas educativas, motivou a elaboração deste trabalho de investigação, que tem como objeto de estudo os papéis desempenhados pelos diretores das escolas estatais e não estatais e como objetivos específicos estudar o impacto da legislação emanada pela tutela, nas escolas públicas e privadas e analisar as convergências e divergências nas conceções e práticas dos seus diretores. As dimensões analíticas exploradas no estudo abrangem as conceções gestionárias dos diretores quanto aos modelos de gestão, às práticas de autonomia, ao serviço educativo e à prestação de contas. Este trabalho de natureza qualitativa foca o olhar sobre um grupo restrito de atores educativos que foram escolhidos devido ao papel que desempenham na organização educativa e porque a publicação do Decreto- Lei 75/ 2008 de 22 de abril, trouxe alterações à escola pública. A tradição de direção colegial que vigorava nas organizações educativas estatais foi quebrada. O presidente do conselho diretivo é doravante substituído pelo diretor que passa a delegar competências, a designar equipas e a prestar contas à tutela e comunidade educativa à semelhança do diretor da escola privada. O estudo de caso apresentado foi realizado em três escolas públicas e em três colégios privados com recurso a entrevistas semiestruturadas e à análise documental. As conclusões deste trabalho remetem para a existência de muitos pontos de convergência entre a opinião dos diretores da escola pública e privada. As temáticas relativas à autonomia, escolha do pessoal docente e prestação de contas, são olhadas pela mesma perspetiva. A autonomia é vista como “uma miragem”; uma “terra prometida” (Lima e Afonso, 1995). A prestação de contas é exigida aos diretores do ensino estatal e do privado através de instrumentos próximos. As principais divergências situam-se ao nível do menor interesse demonstrado, por parte da direção da escola privada, pela oferta de cursos profissionais e pelo menor investimento em estratégias para a prevenção do abandono escolar, que é considerado pouco significativo na escola não estatal. A defesa da escolha de escola e da modalidade de cheque ensino são outros dos pontos que marcam a divergência entre estes diretores. Abstract: This investigative paper - whose objective is the study of the role of the school directors, both State and non-state, and the impact of legislation on both State and private schools, as well as the analysis of the convergent and divergent conceptions and practices of these directors – is motivated by the crucial role played by schools in our society and by the professional activity of the teacher, with an attentive look at the educational practices. The analytical dimension explored in this study includes the various concepts of management of the school director as models of management, as well as practices in self-sufficiency, budget control and educational service to the community. This study has a qualitative nature and focuses on a small group of individuals who were chosen for the role they play in the whole educational structure, considering that the Decree nº 75/2008, published on April the 22nd, determined alterations to the public school system. The traditional method of control of the public school system has, henceforth, been changed. The headmaster is now substituted by a director who delegates his functions, makes up work teams and elaborates the school budget which is presented to the respective governmental ministry and the community, much like as what happens in private schools. The present study encompasses three public schools and three private schools, the methods of study being semi-structured interviews as well as the consultation of documentation. The conclusions point to many convergent opinions of the school directors of both the public and the private sector. The school directors of both public and private schools used in this study share the same opinion as to the factors involved in the selection of teachers, the elaboration of the school budget and the implementation of self-sufficiency policies. These self-sufficiency policies are seen as a “mirage” or a “promised land” (Lima and Afonso, 1995). The school budget and its management practices are implemented in both public and private schools through similar instruments. The principal differences are noted on smaller, less interesting points, on the part of the direction of the private schools, and result from the elaboration of professional courses and minor investment in the strategies, oriented to the prevention of school drop-outs, which is considered of little significance in the private school sector. The other factors of divergence result from the right to choose the type of school desired and the type of teaching implemented.

The criticality of self-assembled rigid rods on triangular lattices is investigated using Monte Carlo simulation. We find a continuous transition between an ordered phase, where the rods are oriented along one of the three (equivalent) lattice directions, and a disordered one. We conclude that equilibrium polydispersity of the rod lengths does not affect the critical behavior, as we found that the criticality is the same as that of monodisperse rodson the same lattice, in contrast with the results of recently published work on similar models. The kraft pulps produced from heartwood and sapwood of Eucalyptus globulus at 130 degrees C, 150 degrees C, and 170 degrees C were characterized by wet chemistry (total lignin as sum of Klason and soluble lignin fractions) and pyrolysis (total lignin denoted as py-lignin). The total lignin content obtained with both methods was similar. In the course of delignification, the py-lignin values were higher (by 2 to 5%) compared to Klason values, which is in line with the importance of soluble lignin for total lignin determination. Pyrolysis analysis presents advantages over wet chemical procedures, and it can be applied to wood and pulps to determine lignin contents at different stages of the delignification process. The py-lignin values were used for kinetic modelling of delignification, with very high predictive value and results similar to those of modelling using wet chemical determinations.

We report the nucleotide sequence of a 17,893 bp DNA segment from the right arm of Saccharomyces cerevisiae chromosome VII. This fragment begins at 482 kb from the centromere. The sequence includes the BRF1 gene, encoding TFIIIB70, the 5' portion of the GCN5 gene, an open reading frame (ORF) previously identified as ORF MGA1, whose translation product shows similarity to heat-shock transcription factors and five new ORFs. Among these, YGR250 encodes a polypeptide that harbours a domain present in several polyA binding proteins. YGR245 is similar to a putative Schizosaccharomyces pombe gene, YGR248 shows significant similarity with three ORFs of S. cerevisiae situated on different chromosomes, while the remaining two ORFs, YGR247 and YGR251, do not show significant similarity to sequences present in databases.

This paper is on the self-scheduling for a power producer taking part in day-ahead joint energy and spinning reserve markets and aiming at a short-term coordination of wind power plants with concentrated solar power plants having thermal energy storage. The short-term coordination is formulated as a mixed-integer linear programming problem given as the maximization of profit subjected to technical operation constraints, including the ones related to a transmission line. Probability density functions are used to model the variability of the hourly wind speed and the solar irradiation in regard to a negative correlation. Case studies based on an Iberian Peninsula wind and concentrated solar power plants are presented, providing the optimal energy and spinning reserve for the short-term self-scheduling in order to unveil the coordination benefits and synergies between wind and solar resources. Results and sensitivity analysis are in favour of the coordination, showing an increase on profit, allowing for spinning reserve, reducing the need for curtailment, increasing the transmission line capacity factor. One fundamental idea of service-oriented computing is that applications should be developed by composing already available services. Due to the long running nature of service interactions, a main challenge in service composition is ensuring correctness of transaction recovery. In this paper, we use a process calculus suitable for modelling long running transactions with a recovery mechanism based on compensations. Within this setting, we discuss and formally state correctness criteria for compensable processes compositions, assuming that each process is correct with respect to transaction recovery. Under our theory, we formally interpret self-healing compositions, that can detect and recover from faults, as correct compositions of compensable processes. Moreover, we develop an automated verification approach and we apply it to an illustrative case study.

New homoditopic bis-calix[4]arene-carbazole conjugates, armed with hydrophilic carboxylic acid functions at their lower rims, are disclosed. Evidence for their self-association in solution was gathered from solvatochromic and thermochromic studies, as well as from gel-permeation chromatography analysis. Their ability to function as highly sensitive sensors toward polar electron-deficient aromatic compounds is demonstrated.

Four Cynara cardunculus clones, two from Portugal and two from Spain were studied for biomass production and their lignin was characterized. The clones differed in biomass partitioning: Spanish clones produced more capitula (54.5% vs. 43.9%), and Portuguese clones more stalks (37.2% vs. 25.6%). The heating values (HHV0) of the stalks were similar, ranging from 17.1 to 18.4 MJ/kg. Lignin was studied by analytical pyrolysis (Py-GC/MS(FID)), separately in depithed stalks (stalksDP) and pith. StalksDP had in average higher relative proportions of lignin derived compounds than pith (23.9% vs. 21.8%) with slightly different lignin monomeric composition: pith samples were richer in syringyl units as compared to stalksDP (64% vs. 53%), with S/G ratios of 2.1 and 1.3, respectively. The H:G:S composition was 7:40:53 in stalksDP and 7:29:64 in pith. The lignin content ranged from 18.8% to 25.5%, enabling a differentiation between clones and provenances. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. The basic objective of this work is to evaluate the durability of self-compacting concrete (SCC) produced in binary and ternary mixes using fly ash (FA) and limestone filler (LF) as partial replacement of cement. The main characteristics that set SCC apart from conventional concrete (fundamentally its fresh state behaviour) essentially depend on the greater or lesser content of various constituents, namely: greater mortar volume (more ultrafine material in the form of cement and mineral additions); proper control of the maximum size of the coarse aggregate; use of admixtures such as superplasticizers. Significant amounts of mineral additions are thus incorporated to partially replace cement, in order to improve the workability of the concrete. These mineral additions necessarily affect the concrete’s microstructure and its durability. Therefore, notwithstanding the many well-documented and acknowledged advantages of SCC, a better understanding its behaviour is still required, in particular when its composition includes significant amounts of mineral additions. An ambitious working plan was devised: first, the SCC’s microstructure was studied and characterized and afterwards the main transport and degradation mechanisms of the SCC produced were studied and characterized by means of SEM image analysis, chloride migration, electrical resistivity, and carbonation tests. It was then possible to draw conclusions about the SCC’s durability. The properties studied are strongly affected by the type and content of the additions. Also, the use of ternary mixes proved to be extremely favourable, confirming the expected beneficial effect of the synergy between LF and FA. © 2015 RILEM.
