Optical fiber microwires (OFMs) are nonlinear optical waveguides that support several spatial modes. The multimodal generalized nonlinear Schrodinger equation (MM-GNLSE) is deduced taking into account the linear and nonlinear modal coupling. A detailed theoretical description of four-wave mixing (FWM) considering the modal coupling is developed. Both, the intramode and the intermode phase-matching conditions is calculated for an optical microwire in a strong guiding regime. Finally, the FWM dynamics is studied and the amplitude evolution of the pump beams, the signal and the idler are analyzed.

In this paper we exploit the nonlinear property of the SiC multilayer devices to design an optical processor for error detection that enables reliable delivery of spectral data of four-wave mixing over unreliable communication channels. The SiC optical processor is realized by using double pin/pin a-SiC:H photodetector with front and back biased optical gating elements. Visible pulsed signals are transmitted together at different bit sequences. The combined optical signal is analyzed. Data show that the background acts as selector that picks one or more states by splitting portions of the input multi optical signals across the front and back photodiodes. Boolean operations such as EXOR and three bit addition are demonstrated optically, showing that when one or all of the inputs are present, the system will behave as an XOR gate representing the SUM. When two or three inputs are on, the system acts as AND gate indicating the present of the CARRY bit. Additional parity logic operations are performed using four incoming pulsed communication channels that are transmitted and checked for errors together. As a simple example of this approach, we describe an all-optical processor for error detection and then provide an experimental demonstration of this idea. (C) 2014 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. A fuzzy linguistic controller has been developed and implemented with the aim to cope with interactions between control loops due to coupling effects. To access the performance of the proposed approach several experiments have also been conducted using the classical PID controllers in the control loops. A mixing process has been used as test bed of all controllers experimented and the corresponding dynamic model has been derived. The successful results achieved with the fuzzy linguistic controllers suggests that they can be an alternative to classical controllers when in the presence of process plants where automatic control as to cope with coupling effects between control loops. © 2014 IEEE.

Diethyldithiocarbamate (ditiocarb), a metabolite of the old anti-alcoholic drug disulfiram (Antabuse), forms proteasome-inhibiting metal complexes with copper or zinc that suppress cancer cells both in vitro and in vivo. The drug has been used in a clinical trial (NCT00742911) along with copper gluconate as a dietary supplement in patients with cancer spreading to the liver. In this study, we demonstrate the effect of synthetic complexes of disulfiram with four various metals (Mn, Fe, Cr and Cu) used as food supplements. These complexes may be spontaneously formed in the blood during the use of disulfiram with divalent metals and thus may suppress the growth of cancer in vivo. The cytotoxic effect of the compounds and the compounds' ability to inhibit the cellular proteasome were tested in the osteosarcoma cell line U2OS. After 48 h, copper and manganese complexes exhibited cytotoxic effect on the cell line, in sharp contrast to both iron and chromium complexes.
