No literature data above atmospheric pressure could be found for the viscosity of TOTIVI. As a consequence, the present viscosity results could only be compared upon extrapolation of the vibrating wire data to 0.1 MPa. Independent viscosity measurements were performed, at atmospheric pressure, using an Ubbelohde capillary in order to compare with the vibrating wire results, extrapolated by means of the above mentioned correlation. The two data sets agree within +/- 1%, which is commensurate with the mutual uncertainty of the experimental methods. Comparisons of the literature data obtained at atmospheric pressure with the present extrapolated vibrating-wire viscosity measurements have shown an agreement within +/- 2% for temperatures up to 339 K and within +/- 3.3% for temperatures up to 368 K. Microarray allow to monitoring simultaneously thousands of genes, where the abundance of the transcripts under a same experimental condition at the same time can be quantified. Among various available array technologies, double channel cDNA microarray experiments have arisen in numerous technical protocols associated to genomic studies, which is the focus of this work. Microarray experiments involve many steps and each one can affect the quality of raw data. Background correction and normalization are preprocessing techniques to clean and correct the raw data when undesirable fluctuations arise from technical factors. Several recent studies showed that there is no preprocessing strategy that outperforms others in all circumstances and thus it seems difficult to provide general recommendations. In this work, it is proposed to use exploratory techniques to visualize the effects of preprocessing methods on statistical analysis of cancer two-channel microarray data sets, where the cancer types (classes) are known. For selecting differential expressed genes the arrow plot was used and the graph of profiles resultant from the correspondence analysis for visualizing the results. It was used 6 background methods and 6 normalization methods, performing 36 pre-processing methods and it was analyzed in a published cDNA microarray database (Liver) available at http://genome-www5.stanford.edu/ which microarrays were already classified by cancer type. All statistical analyses were performed using the R statistical software.

O presente trabalho apresenta um estudo laboratorial que teve como finalidade o reconhecimento de perda de propriedades da madeira de edifícios antigos quando degradada por carunchos. Foi estudada madeira antiga de pinho e de choupo, com idades compreendidas entre 100 e 200 anos. Como abordagem inicial são apresentadas as características da madeira e dos edifícios pombalinos e gaioleiros onde esta era bastante usada, não só como elemento deacabamento, mas principalmente como elemento estrutural. São apresentados os vários fatores que levam à degradação da madeira assim como alguns métodos de avaliação e diagnóstico dos estados de conservação dos elementos de madeira que se encontram nos edifícios. É também desenvolvido um estudo sobre o caruncho grande e caruncho pequeno, seu ciclo de vida e forma como degrada a madeira, servindo de base ao estudo laboratorial. No desenvolvimento foi avaliado o estado de degradação de provetes de madeira antiga com 30 x 30 x 90 mm e de seguida correlacionado com a sua resistência à compressão, o seu módulo de elasticidade e a extensão em fase plástica. Desta forma pretende-se estudar o modo como os diferentes estados de degradação por caruncho influenciam as caraterísticas mecânicas das peças de madeira.

Current Electrocardiographic (ECG) signal acquisition methods are generally highly intrusive, as they involve the use of pre-gelled electrodes and cabled sensors placed directly on the person, at the chest or limbs level. Moreover, systems that make use of alternative conductive materials to overcome this issue, only provide heart rate information and not the detailed signal itself. We present a comparison and evaluation of two types of dry electrodes as interface with the skin, targeting wearable and low intrusiveness applications, which enable ECG measurement without the need for any apparatus permanently fitted to the individual. In particular, our approach is targeted at ECG biometrics using signals collected at the hand or finger level. A custom differential circuit with virtual ground was also developed for enhanced usability. Our work builds upon the current stateof-the-art in sensoring devices and processing tools, and enables novel data acquisition settings through the use of dry electrodes. Experimental evaluation was performed for Ag/AgCl and Electrolycra materials, and results show that both materials exhibit adequate performance for the intended application.
