O rearranjo [3,3]-sigmatrópico térmico (180ºC) de diferentes N-alil-N-sililoxi enaminas foi estudado. Os respectivos produtos de rearranjo (éteres de óxima) foram obtidos com rendimentos elevados (80%). A regiosselectividade, [3,3] vs [1,3], e a diastereosselectividade do processo foram elevadas, superior a 99% e aproximadamente 80%, respectivamente. Foi demonstrada a importância do grupo sililoxilo na promoção do rearranjo face a substratos sem este tipo de substituição. Posteriormente, foi estudada a possibilidade de aceleração aniónica deste tipo de rearranjo por formação de oxianião ligado ao átomo de azoto. A estratégia seguida para a formação do mesmo, consistiu na O-dessililação de diferentes N-alil-N-sililoxi enaminas tendo-se obtido as nitronas correspondentes ou produtos de ciclização. Num exemplo envolvendo um derivado de isoxazole-5-(2H)-ona foi observado um aumento de velocidade do rearranjo por reacção com ião etoxilo. Este aumento de velocidade foi atribuído à abertura de anel do N-O éster cíclico para o N-oxianião, seguida de rearranjo e posterior fecho. Métodos alternativos de aceleração do rearranjo por geração de carga positiva, parcial ou completa, no átomo de azoto levaram apenas à dessililação das N-alil-N-sililoxi enaminas. ABSTRACT - [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement of a variety of N-allyl-N-silyloxy enamines was studied. The corresponding rearrangement products (oxime-ethers) were obtained in high yields (80%). High regioselectivity, [3,3] vs [1,3] (> 99%) and in appropriate cases, diastereoselectivity (80%) were observed. The importance of the silyloxy group in promoting the rearrangement, in relation to substrates lacking this functionality, is underlined. The possible anionic acceleration of the rearrangements was next examined by O-desilylation the N-silyloxy group bonded to the nitrogen. Attempted generation of these species however, was found to lead either to the corresponding nitrones or to cyclization products. In one particular example involving an isoxazol-5-(2H)-one derivative rate enhancement of rearrangement was indeed observed with ethoxide ion. It is tentatively attributed to ring opening of the cyclic N-O ester to the N-oxyanion ethyl ester followed by rearrangement and subsequent reclosure. Alternative methods to accelerate the process by generating a partial or complete positive charge on the nitrogen atom led only to desilylation.

A multistate molecular dyad containing flavylium and viologen units was synthesized and the pH dependent thermodynamics of the network completely characterized by a variety of spectroscopic techniques such as NMR, UV-vis and stopped-flow. The flavylium cation is only stable at acidic pH values. Above pH ≈ 5 the hydration of the flavylium leads to the formation of the hemiketal followed by ring-opening tautomerization to give the cis-chalcone. Finally, this last species isomerizes to give the trans-chalcone. For the present system only the flavylium cation and the trans-chalcone species could be detected as being thermodynamically stable. The hemiketal and the cis-chalcone are kinetic intermediates with negligible concentrations at the equilibrium. All stable species of the network were found to form 1 : 1 and 2 : 1 host : guest complexes with cucurbit[7]uril (CB7) with association constants in the ranges 10(5)-10(8) M(-1) and 10(3)-10(4) M(-1), respectively. The 1 : 1 complexes were particularly interesting to devise pH responsive bistable pseudorotaxanes: at basic pH values (≈12) the flavylium cation interconverts into the deprotonated trans-chalcone in a few minutes and under these conditions the CB7 wheel was found to be located around the viologen unit. A decrease in pH to values around 1 regenerates the flavylium cation in seconds and the macrocycle is translocated to the middle of the axle. On the other hand, if the pH is decreased to 6, the deprotonated trans-chalcone is neutralized to give a metastable species that evolves to the thermodynamically stable flavylium cation in ca. 20 hours. By taking advantage of the pH-dependent kinetics of the trans-chalcone/flavylium interconversion, spatiotemporal control of the molecular organization in pseudorotaxane systems can be achieved.

P>Reconstruction of the South Atlantic opening has long been a matter of debate and several models have been proposed. One problem in tracing properly the Atlantic history arises from the existence of a long interval without geomagnetic reversals, the Cretaceous Normal Superchron, for which ages are difficult to assign. Palaeomagnetism may help in addressing this issue if high-quality palaeomagnetic poles are available for the two drifting continental blocks, and if precise absolute ages are available. In this work we have investigated the Cabo Magmatic Province, northeastern Brazil, recently dated at 102 +/- 1 Ma (zircon fission tracks, Ar39/Ar40). All volcanic and plutonic rocks showed stable thermal and AF demagnetization patterns, and exhibit primary magnetic signatures. AMS data also support a primary origin for the magnetic fabric and is interpreted to be contemporaneous of the rock formation. The obtained pole is located at 335.9 degrees E/87.9 degrees S (N = 24; A(95) = 2.5; K = 138) and satisfies modern quality criteria, resulting in a reference pole for South America at similar to 100 Ma. This new pole also gives an insight to test and discuss the kinematic models currently proposed for the South Atlantic opening during mid-Cretaceous.

We investigate the structural and thermodynamic properties of a model of particles with 2 patches of type A and 10 patches of type B. Particles are placed on the sites of a face centered cubic lattice with the patches oriented along the nearest neighbor directions. The competition between the self- assembly of chains, rings, and networks on the phase diagram is investigated by carrying out a systematic investigation of this class of models, using an extension ofWertheim's theory for associating fluids and Monte Carlo numerical simulations. We varied the ratio r epsilon(AB)/epsilon(AA) of the interaction between patches A and B, epsilon(AB), and between A patches, epsilon(AA) (epsilon(BB) is set to theta) as well as the relative position of the A patches, i.e., the angle. between the (lattice) directions of the A patches. We found that both r and theta (60 degrees, 90 degrees, or 120 degrees) have a profound effect on the phase diagram. In the empty fluid regime (r < 1/2) the phase diagram is reentrant with a closed miscibility loop. The region around the lower critical point exhibits unusual structural and thermodynamic behavior determined by the presence of relatively short rings. The agreement between the results of theory and simulation is excellent for theta = 120 degrees but deteriorates as. decreases, revealing the need for new theoretical approaches to describe the structure and thermodynamics of systems dominated by small rings. Two series of new diorganotin(IV) cycloalkylhydroxamate complexes with different ring sizes (cyclopropyl, cyclobutyl, cyclopentyl and cyclohexyl), formulated as the mononuclear [R2Sn(HL)(2)] (1:2) (a, R=Bu-n and Ph) and the polymeric [R2SnL](n) (1:1) (b, R=Bu-n) compounds, were prepared and fully characterized. Single crystal X-ray diffraction for [(Bu2Sn)-Bu-n{C5H9C(O)NHO}(2)] (3a) discloses the cis geometry and strong intermolecular NH center dot center dot center dot O interactions. The in vitro cytotoxic activities of the complexes were evaluated against HL-60, Bel-7402, BGC-823 and KB human tumour cell lines, the greater activity concerning [(Bu2Sn)-Bu-n(HL)(2)] [HL=C3H5C(O)NHO (1a), C6H11C(O)NHO (4a)] towards BGC-823. The complexes undergo, by cyclic voltammetry and controlled-potential electrolysis, one irreversible overall two-electron cathodic process at a reduction potential that does not appear to correlate with the antitumour activity. The electrochemical behaviour of [R2Sn(C5H9C(O)NHO)(2)] [R=Bu-n (3a), Ph (7a)] was also investigated using density functional theory (DFT) methods, showing that the ultimate complex structure and the mechanism of its formation are R dependent: for the aromatic (R = Ph) complex, the initial reduction step is centred on the phenyl ligands and at the metal, being followed by a second reduction with Sn-O and Sn-C ruptures, whereas for the alkyl (R=Bu-n) complex the first reduction step is centred on one of the hydroxamate ligands and is followed by a second reduction with Sn-O bond cleavages and preservation of the alkyl ligands. In both cases, the final complexes are highly coordinative unsaturated Sn-II species with the cis geometry, features that can be of biological significance.

In this paper we investigate some classes of semigroup rings with respect to (semi)primeness and (semi)primitivity. We do so by extending the techniques developed by Munn in (Proc R Soc Edinbur Sect A 107:175-196, 1987) and (Proc R Soc Edinbur Sect A 115:109-117, 1990) for the study of semigroup rings of inverse semigroups. Restriction, weakly ample and ample semigroups are considered.
