Nesta dissertação descreve-se uma metodologia de dimensionamento do sistema de tracção para equipar um veículo eléctrico ecológico (VEECO) com inclusão de um sistema de travagem regenerativa. Apresenta-se uma perspectiva geral de diversas topologias de sistemas de tracção utilizadas nos veículos eléctricos e realiza-se a sua comparação através do estudo e análise dos acionamentos electromecânicos que podem ser utilizados nesses sistemas de tracção eléctrica. Utilizando ferramentas de simulação numérica, estuda-se o modelo matemático de um veículo eléctrico com travagem regenerativa. A partir deste modelo matemático é adoptado uma possível configuração para o seu sistema de tracção eléctrica e são obtidas características teóricas de desempenho do veículo eléctrico, através da análise de testes padrão ao veículo. Em banco de ensaios, constrói-se um sistema de tracção eléctrica que permite a validação experimental do modelo matemático do veículo eléctrico. Para a construção deste banco de ensaios foram concebidos os sistemas de tracção eléctrica, de carga mecânica e de controlo e monitorização do banco de ensaios. A validação experimental realiza-se através dos mesmos testes padrão ao veículo eléctrico, como o teste NEDC (New European Driving Cycle), o teste de aceleração entre 0 e 100km/h e o teste de gradeabilidade. Desenvolve-se o dimensionamento do sistema de tracção eléctrica a equipar o VEECO, através da componente de modelação paramétrica do modelo matemático do veículo eléctrico. Com esta metodologia é adoptado um conjunto de variáveis paramétricas relacionadas com os elementos que constituem o sistema de tracção eléctrica do VEECO. Estuda-se a influência destas variáveis paramétricas nas características de desempenho pretendidas para o VEECO. Como resultado da análise de modelação paramétrica é apresentada uma solução para o sistema de tracção eléctrica do VEECO que cumpre a execução do NEDC, apresenta um tempo de aceleração entre 0 e 100km/h inferior a 10 segundos, supera uma gradeabilidade de 10% e uma autonomia de 200 km. O sistema de tracção do VEECO também permite realizar a travagem regenerativa com rendimento até 33%. Possui controlo de tracção e anti bloqueio da roda motora, através de uma unidade de controlo que permite reduzir a potência transmitida ao veio, quando a velocidade da roda de tracção difere do valor de referência da velocidade do veículo. Os conhecimentos adquiridos através do processo de investigação e desenvolvimento, para a realização da presente dissertação permitem apresentar perspectivas de desenvolvimento futuro com aplicação nos sistemas de tracção de veículos eléctricos rodoviários.

The present work aims to study the feasibility of deploying a farm of sea current turbines for electricity generation in Portugal. An approach to the tides, which are they, how they are formed, its prediction, is held. It is also conducted a study about the energy of sea currents and it is presented some technology about ocean currents too. A model of tidal height and velocity of the currents it is also developed. The energy produced by a hypothetical park, built in Sines (Portugal), is calculated and afterwards, an economical assessment is performed for two possible scenarios and a sensitivity analysis of NVP (Net Present Value) and LCOE (Levelized Cost of Energy) is figured. The conclusions about the feasibility of the projects are also presented. Despite being desired due to its predictability, this energy source is not yet economically viable as it is in an initial state of development. To push investment in this technology a feed-in tariff of, at least €200/MWh, should be considered.

This paper is on the self-scheduling for a power producer taking part in day-ahead joint energy and spinning reserve markets and aiming at a short-term coordination of wind power plants with concentrated solar power plants having thermal energy storage. The short-term coordination is formulated as a mixed-integer linear programming problem given as the maximization of profit subjected to technical operation constraints, including the ones related to a transmission line. Probability density functions are used to model the variability of the hourly wind speed and the solar irradiation in regard to a negative correlation. Case studies based on an Iberian Peninsula wind and concentrated solar power plants are presented, providing the optimal energy and spinning reserve for the short-term self-scheduling in order to unveil the coordination benefits and synergies between wind and solar resources. Results and sensitivity analysis are in favour of the coordination, showing an increase on profit, allowing for spinning reserve, reducing the need for curtailment, increasing the transmission line capacity factor. This paper presents a computational tool (PHEx) developed in Excel VBA for solving sizing and rating design problems involving Chevron type plate heat exchangers (PHE) with 1-pass-1-pass configuration. The rating methodology procedure used in the program is outlined, and a case study is presented with the purpose to show how the program can be used to develop sensitivity analysis to several dimensional parameters of PHE and to observe their effect on transferred heat and pressure drop.

Within a large set of renewable energies being explored to tackle energy sourcing problems, bioenergy can represent an attractive solution if effectively managed. The supply chain design supported by mathematical programming can be used as a decision support tool to the successful bioenergy production systems establishment. This strategic decision problem is addressed in this paper where we intent to study the design of the residual forestry biomass to bioelectricity production in the Portuguese context. In order to contribute to attain better solutions a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model is developed and applied in order to optimize the design and planning of the bioenergy supply chain. While minimizing the total supply chain cost the production energy facilities capacity and location are defined. The model also includes the optimal selection of biomass amounts and sources, the transportation modes selection, and links that must be established for biomass transportation and products delivers to markets. Results illustrate the positive contribution of the mathematical programming approach to achieve viable economic solutions. Sensitivity analysis on the most uncertain parameters was performed: biomass availability, transportation costs, fixed operating costs and investment costs. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. This paper presents an optimization study of a distillation column for methanol and aqueous glycerol separation in a biodiesel production plant. Considering the available physical data of the column configuration, a steady state model was built for the column using Aspen-HYSYS as process simulator. Several sensitivity analysis were performed in order to better understand the relation between the variables of the distillation process. With the information obtained by the simulator, it is possible to define the best range for some operational variables that maintain composition of the desired product under specifications and choose operational conditions to minimize energy consumptions.

Interest rate risk is one of the major financial risks faced by banks due to the very nature of the banking business. The most common approach in the literature has been to estimate the impact of interest rate risk on banks using a simple linear regression model. However, the relationship between interest rate changes and bank stock returns does not need to be exclusively linear. This article provides a comprehensive analysis of the interest rate exposure of the Spanish banking industry employing both parametric and non parametric estimation methods. Its main contribution is to use, for the first time in the context of banks’ interest rate risk, a nonparametric regression technique that avoids the assumption of a specific functional form. One the one hand, it is found that the Spanish banking sector exhibits a remarkable degree of interest rate exposure, although the impact of interest rate changes on bank stock returns has significantly declined following the introduction of the euro. Further, a pattern of positive exposure emerges during the post-euro period. On the other hand, the results corresponding to the nonparametric model support the expansion of the conventional linear model in an attempt to gain a greater insight into the actual degree of exposure.

One of the most effective ways of controlling vibrations in plate or beam structures is by means of constrained viscoelastic damping treatments. Contrary to the unconstrained configuration, the design of constrained and integrated layer damping treatments is multifaceted because the thickness of the viscoelastic layer acts distinctly on the two main counterparts of the strain energy the volume of viscoelastic material and the shear strain field. In this work, a parametric study is performed exploring the effect that the design parameters, namely the thickness/length ratio, constraining layer thickness, material modulus, natural mode and boundary conditions have on these two counterparts and subsequently, on the treatment efficiency. This paper presents five parametric studies, namely, the thickness/length ratio, the constraining layer thickness, material properties, natural mode and boundary conditions. The results obtained evidence an interesting effect when dealing with very thin viscoelastic layers that contradicts the standard treatment efficiency vs. layer thickness relation; hence, the potential optimisation of constrained and integrated viscoelastic treatments through the use of properly designed thin multilayer configurations is justified. This work presents a dimensionless analysis and provides useful general guidelines for the efficient design of constrained and integrated damping treatments based on single or multi-layer configurations.
