We present a study of the magnetic properties of a group of basalt samples from the Saldanha Massif (Mid-Atlantic Ridge - MAR - 36degrees 33' 54" N, 33degrees 26' W), and we set out to interpret these properties in the tectono-magmatic framework of this sector of the MAR. Most samples have low magnetic anisotropy and magnetic minerals of single domain grain size, typical of rapid cooling. The thermomagnetic study mostly shows two different susceptibility peaks. The high temperature peak is related to mineralogical alteration due to heating. The low temperature peak shows a distinction between three different stages of low temperature oxidation: the presence of titanomagnetite, titanomagnetite and titanomaghemite, and exclusively of titanomaghemite. Based on established empirical relationships between Curie temperature and degree of oxidation, the latter is tentatively deduced for all samples. Finally, swath bathymetry and sidescan sonar data combined with dive observations show that the Saldanha Massif is located over an exposed section of upper mantle rocks interpreted to be the result of detachment tectonics. Basalt samples inside the detachment zone often have higher than expected oxidation rates; this effect can be explained by the higher permeability caused by the detachment fault activity.

Esta comunicação integrada no seminário “Polícia e os Media – Comunicação da (in)segurança”, analisa os resultados da análise de conteúdo, em termos quantitativos, e caracterização metodológica de uma amostra de telejornais de horário nobre nos quatro canais de sinal aberto entre 2002 a 2006, focando-se nas notícias sobre Ordem Interna. Este foi o quarto tema mais frequente nos noticiários portugueses, representando cerca de 11% das notícias só sendo suplantado pela política nacional e internacional e pelo desporto. Relativamente a este tema foram explorados diversos fatores de caracterização das notícias que o abordavam, comparação da sua distribuição ao longo do alinhamento dos telejornais e dos noticiários de cada canal.

O Conselho Cientifico do Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa dá continuidade à publicação do Anuário Científico do ISEL com esta edição relativa ao ano de 2002. Os trabalhos científicos, artigos, comunicações, teses e livros, cujos resumos integram este Anuário Científico são reveladores do entrosamento do nosso corpo docente com a comunidade científica (académica e de investigação) e são um indicador da qualidade do trabalho científico e de investigação realizado. A investigação é uma das obrigações da academia. Esta actividade, por envolver o desconhecido e a procura de soluções inéditas, não se coaduna com a imposição de limitações, especialmente quando estas são artificiais. Todos aqueles que para o trabalho de investigação possuam competência devem, em nosso entender, ser estimulados a dar o seu contributo para o desenvolvimento da sociedade. No âmbito do ensino da engenharia, estamos certos que as alterações legislativas em curso no nosso país, se forem orientadas no sentido do incremento da qualidade, terão em conta o real valor de cada instituição e saberão aproveitar o potencial humano, científico e tecnológico do Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa, quebrando o actual espartilho legal, cerceador de parte da actividade de I&D, que inibe, presentemente, a concessão dos graus académicos de Mestre e Doutor. É nosso entendimento que a faculdade de atribuição, pelas instituições de ensino superior, dos graus de pós-graduação deve ser estabelecida com base em critérios, universais e predefinidos, afiançadoras das competências específicas e garantes da qualidade dos resultados.

The Ni-II and Zn-II complexes [MCl(Tpms(Ph))] (Tpms(Ph) = SO3C(pz(Ph))(3), pz = pyrazolyl; M = Ni 2 or Zn 3) and the Cu-II complex [CuCl(Tpms(Ph))(H2O)] (4) have been prepared by treatment of the lithium salt of the sterically demanding and coordination flexible tris(3-phenyl-1-pyrazolyl)methanesulfonate (Tpms(Ph))(-) (1) with the respective metal chlorides. The (Tpms(Ph))(-) ligand shows the N-3 or N2O coordination modes in 2 and 3 or in 4, respectively. Upon reaction of 2 and 3 with Ag(CF3SO3) in acetonitrile the complexes [M(Tpms(Ph))-(MeCN)](CF3SO3) (M = Ni 5 or Zn 6, respectively) were formed. The compounds were obtained in good yields and characterized by analytic and spectral (IR, H-1 and C-13{H-1} NMR, ESI-MS) data, density functional theory (DFT) methods and {for 4 and [(Bu4N)-Bu-n](Tpms(Ph)) (7), the tatter obtained upon Li+ replacement by [(Bu4N)-Bu-n](+) in Li(Tpms(Ph))} by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The Zn-II and Cu-II complexes (3 and 4, respectively) act as efficient catalyst precursors for the diastereoselective nitroaldol reaction of benzaldehydes and nitroethane to the corresponding beta-nitroalkanols (up to 99% yield, at room temperature) with diastereoselectivity towards the formation of the anti isomer, whereas the Ni-II complex 2 only shows a modest catalytic activity.

We present a palaeomagnetic study on 38 lava flows and 20 dykes encompassing the past 1.3 Myr on S. Jorge Island (Azores ArchipelagoNorth Atlantic Ocean). The sections sampled in the southeastern and central/western parts of the island record reversed and normal polarities, respectively. They indicate a mean palaeomagnetic pole (81.3 degrees N, 160.7 degrees E, K= 33 and A95= 3.4 degrees) with a latitude shallower than that expected from Geocentric Axial Dipole assumption, suggesting an effect of non-dipolar components of the Earth magnetic field. Virtual Geomagnetic Poles of eight flows and two dykes closely follow the contemporaneous records of the Cobb Mountain Subchron (ODP/DSDP programs) and constrain the age transition from reversed to normal polarity at ca. 1.207 +/- 0.017 Ma. Volcano flank instabilities, probably related to dyke emplacement along an NNWSSE direction, led to southwestward tilting of the lava pile towards the sea. Two spatially and temporally distinct dyke systems have been recognized on the island. The eastern is dominated by NNWSSE trending dykes emplaced before the end of the Matuyama Chron, whereas in the central/western parts the eruptive fissures oriented WNWESE controlled the westward growth of the S. Jorge Island during the Brunhes Chron. Both directions are consistent with the present-day regional stress conditions deduced from plate kinematics and tectonomorphology and suggest the emplacement of dykes along pre-existing fractures. The distinct timing and location of each dyke system likely results from a slight shift of the magmatic source.

The morpho-structural evolution of oceanic islands results from competition between volcano growth and partial destruction by mass-wasting processes. We present here a multi-disciplinary study of the successive stages of development of Faial (Azores) during the last 1 Myr. Using high-resolution digital elevation model (DEM), and new K/Ar, tectonic, and magnetic data, we reconstruct the rapidly evolving topography at successive stages, in response to complex interactions between volcanic construction and mass wasting, including the development of a graben. We show that: (1) sub-aerial evolution of the island first involved the rapid growth of a large elongated volcano at ca. 0.85 Ma, followed by its partial destruction over half a million years; (2) beginning about 360 ka a new small edifice grew on the NE of the island, and was subsequently cut by normal faults responsible for initiation of the graben; (3) after an apparent pause of ca. 250 kyr, the large Central Volcano (CV) developed on the western side of the island at ca 120 ka, accumulating a thick pile of lava flows in less than 20 kyr, which were partly channelized within the graben; (4) the period between 120 ka and 40 ka is marked by widespread deformation at the island scale, including westward propagation of faulting and associated erosion of the graben walls, which produced sedimentary deposits; subsequent growth of the CV at 40 ka was then constrained within the graben, with lava flowing onto the sediments up to the eastern shore; (5) the island evolution during the Holocene involves basaltic volcanic activity along the main southern faults and pyroclastic eruptions associated with the formation of a caldera volcano-tectonic depression. We conclude that the whole evolution of Faial Island has been characterized by successive short volcanic pulses probably controlled by brief episodes of regional deformation. Each pulse has been separated by considerable periods of volcanic inactivity during which the Faial graben gradually developed. We propose that the volume loss associated with sudden magma extraction from a shallow reservoir in different episodes triggered incremental downward graben movement, as observed historically, when immediate vertical collapse of up to 2 m was observed along the western segments of the graben at the end of the Capelinhos eruptive crises (1957-58).
