In this paper, a damage-detection approach using the Mahalanobis distance with structural forced dynamic response data, in the form of transmissibility, is proposed. Transmissibility, as a damage-sensitive feature, varies in accordance with the damage level. Besides, Mahalanobis distance can distinguish the damaged structural state condition from the undamaged one by condensing the baseline data. For comparison reasons, the Mahalanobis distance results using transmissibility are compared with those using frequency response functions. The experiment results reveal quite a significant capacity for damage detection, and the comparison between the use of transmissibility and frequency response functions shows that, in both cases, the different damage scenarios could be well detected. Lossless compression algorithms of the Lempel-Ziv (LZ) family are widely used nowadays. Regarding time and memory requirements, LZ encoding is much more demanding than decoding. In order to speed up the encoding process, efficient data structures, like suffix trees, have been used. In this paper, we explore the use of suffix arrays to hold the dictionary of the LZ encoder, and propose an algorithm to search over it. We show that the resulting encoder attains roughly the same compression ratios as those based on suffix trees. However, the amount of memory required by the suffix array is fixed, and much lower than the variable amount of memory used by encoders based on suffix trees (which depends on the text to encode). We conclude that suffix arrays, when compared to suffix trees in terms of the trade-off among time, memory, and compression ratio, may be preferable in scenarios (e.g., embedded systems) where memory is at a premium and high speed is not critical.

This paper studies the evolution of the default risk premia for European firms during the years surrounding the recent credit crisis. We employ the information embedded in Credit Default Swaps (CDS) and Moody’s KMV EDF default probabilities to analyze the common factors driving this risk premia. The risk premium is characterized in several directions: Firstly, we perform a panel data analysis to capture the relationship between CDS spreads and actual default probabilities. Secondly, we employ the intensity framework of Jarrow et al. (2005) in order to measure the theoretical effect of risk premium on expected bond returns. Thirdly, we carry out a dynamic panel data to identify the macroeconomic sources of risk premium. Finally, a vector autoregressive model analyzes which proportion of the co-movement is attributable to financial or macro variables. Our estimations report coefficients for risk premium substantially higher than previously referred for US firms and a time varying behavior. A dominant factor explains around 60% of the common movements in risk premia. Additionally, empirical evidence suggests a public-to-private risk transfer between the sovereign CDS spreads and corporate risk premia.

In recent works large area hydrogenated amorphous silicon p-i-n structures with low conductivity doped layers were proposed as single element image sensors. The working principle of this type of sensor is based on the modulation, by the local illumination conditions, of the photocurrent generated by a light beam scanning the active area of the device. In order to evaluate the sensor capabilities is necessary to perform a response time characterization. This work focuses on the transient response of such sensor and on the influence of the carbon contents of the doped layers. In order to evaluate the response time a set of devices with different percentage of carbon incorporation in the doped layers is analyzed by measuring the scanner-induced photocurrent under different bias conditions.

Model updating methods often neglect that in fact all physical structures are damped. Such simplification relies on the structural modelling approach, although it compromises the accuracy of the predictions of the structural dynamic behaviour. In the present work, the authors address the problem of finite element (FE) model updating based on measured frequency response functions (FRFs), considering damping. The proposed procedure is based upon the complex experimental data, which contains information related to the damped FE model parameters and presents the advantage of requiring no prior knowledge about the damping matrix structure or its content, only demanding the definition of the damping type. Numerical simulations are performed in order to establish the applicability of the proposed damped FE model updating technique and its results are discussed in terms of the correlation between the simulated experimental complex FRFs and the ones obtained from the updated FE model.

Radial basis functions are being used in different scientific areas in order to reproduce the geometrical modeling of an object/structure, as well as to predict its behavior. Due to its characteristics, these functions are well suited for meshfree modeling of physical quantities, which for instances can be associated to the data sets of 3D laser scanning point clouds. In the present work the geometry of a structure is modeled by using multiquadric radial basis functions, and its configuration is further optimized in order to obtain better performances concerning to its static and dynamic behavior. For this purpose the authors consider the particle swarm optimization technique. A set of case studies is presented to illustrate the adequacy of the meshfree model used, as well as its link to particle swarm optimization technique. © 2014 IEEE.

Sandwich structures with soft cores are widely used in applications where a high bending stiffness is required without compromising the global weight of the structure, as well as in situations where good thermal and damping properties are important parameters to observe. As equivalent single layer approaches are not the more adequate to describe realistically the kinematics and the stresses distributions as well as the dynamic behaviour of this type of sandwiches, where shear deformations and the extensibility of the core can be very significant, layerwise models may provide better solutions. Additionally and in connection with this multilayer approach, the selection of different shear deformation theories according to the nature of the material that constitutes the core and the outer skins can predict more accurately the sandwich behaviour. In the present work the authors consider the use of different shear deformation theories to formulate different layerwise models, implemented through kriging-based finite elements. The viscoelastic material behaviour, associated to the sandwich core, is modelled using the complex approach and the dynamic problem is solved in the frequency domain. The outer elastic layers considered in this work may also be made from different nanocomposites. The performance of the models developed is illustrated through a set of test cases. We present measurements and numerical simulation of a-Si:H p-i-n detectors with a wide range of intrinsic layer thickness between 2 and 10 pm. Such a large active layer thickness is required in applications like elementary particle detectors or X-ray detectors. For large thickness and depending on the applied bias, we observe a sharp peak in the spectral response in the red region near 700 nm. Simulation results obtained with the program ASCA are in agreement with the measurement and permit the explanation of the experimental data. In thick samples holes recombine or are trapped before reaching the contacts, and the conduction mechanism is fully electron dominated. As a consequence, the peak position in the spectral response is located near the optical band gap of the a-Si:H i-layer. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Data analytic applications are characterized by large data sets that are subject to a series of processing phases. Some of these phases are executed sequentially but others can be executed concurrently or in parallel on clusters, grids or clouds. The MapReduce programming model has been applied to process large data sets in cluster and cloud environments. For developing an application using MapReduce there is a need to install/configure/access specific frameworks such as Apache Hadoop or Elastic MapReduce in Amazon Cloud. It would be desirable to provide more flexibility in adjusting such configurations according to the application characteristics. Furthermore the composition of the multiple phases of a data analytic application requires the specification of all the phases and their orchestration. The original MapReduce model and environment lacks flexible support for such configuration and composition. Recognizing that scientific workflows have been successfully applied to modeling complex applications, this paper describes our experiments on implementing MapReduce as subworkflows in the AWARD framework (Autonomic Workflow Activities Reconfigurable and Dynamic). A text mining data analytic application is modeled as a complex workflow with multiple phases, where individual workflow nodes support MapReduce computations. As in typical MapReduce environments, the end user only needs to define the application algorithms for input data processing and for the map and reduce functions. In the paper we present experimental results when using the AWARD framework to execute MapReduce workflows deployed over multiple Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances.

In this brief, a read-only-memoryless structure for binary-to-residue number system (RNS) conversion modulo {2(n) +/- k} is proposed. This structure is based only on adders and constant multipliers. This brief is motivated by the existing {2(n) +/- k} binary-to-RNS converters, which are particular inefficient for larger values of n. The experimental results obtained for 4n and 8n bits of dynamic range suggest that the proposed conversion structures are able to significantly improve the forward conversion efficiency, with an AT metric improvement above 100%, regarding the related state of the art. Delay improvements of 2.17 times with only 5% area increase can be achieved if a proper selection of the {2(n) +/- k} moduli is performed.
