Topological defects in foam, either isolated (disclinations and dislocations) or in pairs, affect the energy and stress, and play an important role in foam deformation. Surface Evolver simulations were performed on large finite clusters of bubbles. These allow us to evaluate the effect of the topology of the defects, and the distance between defects, on the energy and pressure of foam clusters of different sizes. The energy of such defects follows trends similar to known analytical results for a continuous medium.

We have calculated the equilibrium shape of the axially symmetric Plateau border along which a spherical bubble contacts a flat wall, by analytically integrating Laplace's equation in the presence of gravity, in the limit of small Plateau border sizes. This method has the advantage that it provides closed-form expressions for the positions and orientations of the Plateau border surfaces. Results are in very good overall agreement with those obtained from a numerical solution procedure, and are consistent with experimental data. In particular we find that the effect of gravity on Plateau border shape is relatively small for typical bubble sizes, leading to a widening of the Plateau border for sessile bubbles and to a narrowing for pendant bubbles. The contact angle of the bubble is found to depend even more weakly on gravity. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

We have performed Surface Evolver simulations of two-dimensional hexagonal bubble clusters consisting of a central bubble of area lambda surrounded by s shells or layers of bubbles of unit area. Clusters of up to twenty layers have been simulated, with lambda varying between 0.01 and 100. In monodisperse clusters (i.e., for lambda = 1) [M.A. Fortes, F Morgan, M. Fatima Vaz, Philos. Mag. Lett. 87 (2007) 561] both the average pressure of the entire Cluster and the pressure in the central bubble are decreasing functions of s and approach 0.9306 for very large s, which is the pressure in a bubble of an infinite monodisperse honeycomb foam. Here we address the effect of changing the central bubble area lambda. For small lambda the pressure in the central bubble and the average pressure were both found to decrease with s, as in monodisperse clusters. However, for large,, the pressure in the central bubble and the average pressure increase with s. The average pressure of large clusters was found to be independent of lambda and to approach 0.9306 asymptotically. We have also determined the cluster surface energies given by the equation of equilibrium for the total energy in terms of the area and the pressure in each bubble. When the pressures in the bubbles are not available, an approximate equation derived by Vaz et al. [M. Fatima Vaz, M.A. Fortes, F. Graner, Philos. Mag. Lett. 82 (2002) 575] was shown to provide good estimations for the cluster energy provided the bubble area distribution is narrow. This approach does not take cluster topology into account. Using this approximate equation, we find a good correlation between Surface Evolver Simulations and the estimated Values of energies and pressures. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We have calculated the equilibrium shape of the axially symmetric meniscus along which a spherical bubble contacts a flat liquid surface by analytically integrating the Young-Laplace equation in the presence of gravity, in the limit of large Bond numbers. This method has the advantage that it provides semianalytical expressions for key geometrical properties of the bubble in terms of the Bond number. Results are in good overall agreement with experimental data and are consistent with fully numerical (Surface Evolver) calculations. In particular, we are able to describe how the bubble shape changes from hemispherical, with a flat, shallow bottom, to lenticular, with a deeper, curved bottom, as the Bond number is decreased.

The theory of ecological stoichiometry considers ecological interactions among species with different chemical compositions. Both experimental and theoretical investigations have shown the importance of species composition in the outcome of the population dynamics. A recent study of a theoretical three-species food chain model considering stoichiometry [B. Deng and I. Loladze, Chaos 17, 033108 (2007)] shows that coexistence between two consumers predating on the same prey is possible via chaos. In this work we study the topological and dynamical measures of the chaotic attractors found in such a model under ecological relevant parameters. By using the theory of symbolic dynamics, we first compute the topological entropy associated with unimodal Poincareacute return maps obtained by Deng and Loladze from a dimension reduction. With this measure we numerically prove chaotic competitive coexistence, which is characterized by positive topological entropy and positive Lyapunov exponents, achieved when the first predator reduces its maximum growth rate, as happens at increasing delta(1). However, for higher values of delta(1) the dynamics become again stable due to an asymmetric bubble-like bifurcation scenario. We also show that a decrease in the efficiency of the predator sensitive to prey's quality (increasing parameter zeta) stabilizes the dynamics. Finally, we estimate the fractal dimension of the chaotic attractors for the stoichiometric ecological model.

We present a study of the magnetic properties of a group of basalt samples from the Saldanha Massif (Mid-Atlantic Ridge - MAR - 36degrees 33' 54" N, 33degrees 26' W), and we set out to interpret these properties in the tectono-magmatic framework of this sector of the MAR. Most samples have low magnetic anisotropy and magnetic minerals of single domain grain size, typical of rapid cooling. The thermomagnetic study mostly shows two different susceptibility peaks. The high temperature peak is related to mineralogical alteration due to heating. The low temperature peak shows a distinction between three different stages of low temperature oxidation: the presence of titanomagnetite, titanomagnetite and titanomaghemite, and exclusively of titanomaghemite. Based on established empirical relationships between Curie temperature and degree of oxidation, the latter is tentatively deduced for all samples. Finally, swath bathymetry and sidescan sonar data combined with dive observations show that the Saldanha Massif is located over an exposed section of upper mantle rocks interpreted to be the result of detachment tectonics. Basalt samples inside the detachment zone often have higher than expected oxidation rates; this effect can be explained by the higher permeability caused by the detachment fault activity.

In-plane deformation of foams was studied experimentally by subjecting bidisperse foams to cycles of traction and compression at a prescribed rate. Each foam contained bubbles of two sizes with given area ratio and one of three initial arrangements: sorted perpendicular to the axis of deformation (iso-strain), sorted parallel to the axis of deformation (iso-stress), or randomly mixed. Image analysis was used to measure the characteristics of the foams, including the number of edges separating small from large bubbles N-sl, the perimeter (surface energy), the distribution of the number of sides of the bubbles, and the topological disorder mu(2)(N). Foams that were initially mixed were found to remain mixed after the deformation. The response of sorted foams, however, depended on the initial geometry, including the area fraction of small bubbles and the total number of bubbles. For a given experiment we found that (i) the perimeter of a sorted foam varied little; (ii) each foam tended towards a mixed state, measured through the saturation of N-sl; and (iii) the topological disorder mu(2)(N) increased up to an "equilibrium" value. The results of different experiments showed that (i) the change in disorder, Delta mu(2)(N), decreased with the area fraction of small bubbles under iso-strain, but was independent of it under iso-stress; and (ii) Delta mu(2)(N) increased with Delta N-sl under iso-strain, but was again independent of it under iso-stress. We offer explanations for these effects in terms of elementary topological processes induced by the deformations that occur at the bubble scale.

Dos indícios documentais biográficos, releva uma relação com a indumentária pessoal muito sóbria, muito menos preocupada que a de outros escritores, mas igualmente longe do desleixo. Na sua obra, as descrições de vestuário e as referências à moda são parcas e multo limitadas e nem mesmo a excepção de ter escrito um conto sobre um vestido questiona uma atitude geral de alheamento e desinteresse. ABSTRACT - What was the relationship between José Régio and Fashion? His biography reveals a very sober personal relationship with clothing, much less worried than other writers, but also away from the carelessness. In his work, descriptions of clothing and references to fashion are scarce and limited and not even have written a short story about one dress changes a general attitude of aloofness and detachment.

The population growth of a Staphylococcus aureus culture, an active colloidal system of spherical cells, was followed by rheological measurements, under steady-state and oscillatory shear flows. We observed a rich viscoelastic behavior as a consequence of the bacteria activity, namely, of their multiplication and density-dependent aggregation properties. In the early stages of growth (lag and exponential phases), the viscosity increases by about a factor of 20, presenting several drops and full recoveries. This allows us to evoke the existence of a percolation phenomenon. Remarkably, as the bacteria reach their late phase of development, in which the population stabilizes, the viscosity returns close to its initial value. Most probably, this is caused by a change in the bacteria physiological activity and in particular, by the decrease of their adhesion properties. The viscous and elastic moduli exhibit power-law behaviors compatible with the "soft glassy materials" model, whose exponents are dependent on the bacteria growth stage. Nickel-copper metallic foams were electrodeposited from an acidic electrolyte, using hydrogen bubble evolution as a dynamic template. Their morphology and chemical composition was studied by scanning electron microscopy and related to the deposition parameters (applied current density and deposition time). For high currents densities (above 1 A cm(-2)) the nickel-copper deposits have a three-dimensional foam-like morphology with randomly distributed nearly-circular pores whose walls present an open dendritic structure. The nickel-copper foams are crystalline and composed of pure nickel and a copper-rich phase containing nickel in solid solution. The electrochemical behaviour of the material was studied by cyclic voltammetry and chronopotentiometry (charge-discharge curves) aiming at its application as a positive electrode for supercapacitors. Cyclic voltammograms showed that the Ni-Cu foams have a pseudocapacitive behaviour. The specific capacitance was calculated from charge-discharge data and the best value (105 F g(-1) at 1 mA cm(-2)) was obtained for nickel-copper foams deposited at 1.8 A cm(-2) for 180 s. Cycling stability of these foams was also assessed and they present a 90 % capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles at 10 mA cm(-2).

The activity of growing living bacteria was investigated using real-time and in situ rheology-in stationary and oscillatory shear. Two different strains of the human pathogen Staphylococcus aureus-strain COL and its isogenic cell wall autolysis mutant, RUSAL9-were considered in this work. For low bacteria density, strain COL forms small clusters, while the mutant, presenting deficient cell separation, forms irregular larger aggregates. In the early stages of growth, when subjected to a stationary shear, the viscosity of the cultures of both strains increases with the population of cells. As the bacteria reach the exponential phase of growth, the viscosity of the cultures of the two strains follows different and rich behaviors, with no counterpart in the optical density or in the population's colony-forming units measurements. While the viscosity of strain COL culture keeps increasing during the exponential phase and returns close to its initial value for the late phase of growth, where the population stabilizes, the viscosity of the mutant strain culture decreases steeply, still in the exponential phase, remains constant for some time, and increases again, reaching a constant plateau at a maximum value for the late phase of growth. These complex viscoelastic behaviors, which were observed to be shear-stress-dependent, are a consequence of two coupled effects: the cell density continuous increase and its changing interacting properties. The viscous and elastic moduli of strain COL culture, obtained with oscillatory shear, exhibit power-law behaviors whose exponents are dependent on the bacteria growth stage. The viscous and elastic moduli of the mutant culture have complex behaviors, emerging from the different relaxation times that are associated with the large molecules of the medium and the self-organized structures of bacteria. Nevertheless, these behaviors reflect the bacteria growth stage.

Geophysical data acquired on the conjugate margins system of the Gulf of Lion and West Sardinia (GLWS) is unique in its ability to address fundamental questions about rifting (i.e. crustal thinning, the nature of the continent-ocean transition zone, the style of rifting and subsequent evolution, and the connection between deep and surface processes). While the Gulf of Lion (GoL) was the site of several deep seismic experiments, which occurred before the SARDINIA Experiment (ESP and ECORS Experiments in 1981 and 1988 respectively), the crustal structure of the West Sardinia margin remains unknown. This paper describes the first modeling of wide-angle and near-vertical reflection multi-channel seismic (MCS) profiles crossing the West Sardinia margin, in the Mediterranean Sea. The profiles were acquired, together with the exact conjugate of the profiles crossing the GoL, during the SARDINIA experiment in December 2006 with the French R/V L'Atalante. Forward wide-angle modeling of both data sets (wide-angle and multi-channel seismic) confirms that the margin is characterized by three distinct domains following the onshore unthinned, 26 km-thick continental crust : Domain V, where the crust thins from 26 to 6 km in a width of about 75 km; Domain IV where the basement is characterized by high velocity gradients and lower crustal seismic velocities from 6.8 to 7.25 km/s, which are atypical for either crustal or upper mantle material, and Domain III composed of "atypical" oceanic crust.The structure observed on the West Sardinian margin presents a distribution of seismic velocities that is symmetrical with those observed on the Gulf of Lion's side, except for the dimension of each domain and with respect to the initiation of seafloor spreading. This result does not support the hypothesis of simple shear mechanism operating along a lithospheric detachment during the formation of the Liguro-Provencal basin.
