A luta contra o cancro em Portugal: análise do processo de institucionalização do Instituto Português de Oncologia

Este artigo resulta de um trabalho de investigação realizado no âmbito da tese de licenciatura em Sociologia1, e nele se pretende dar conta dos resultados empíricos sobre o processo de institucionalização do Instituto Português de Oncologia (IPO). Através de um exercício de enquadramento histórico-sociológico sobre a emergência do cancro como uma doença socialmente representada como o mal absoluto, e tendo como uma das principais plataformas teóricas o construtivismo fenomenológico, procurar-se-á compreender de que modo o cancro se cristalizou como um dos mais graves problemas de Saúde Pública das sociedades contemporâneas, analisando para o efeito o caso concreto de Portugal, através da análise do processo de institucionalização do IPO, ocorrido, tal como em outros contextos, no dealbar do século XX.

Demixing instability in coil-rod blends undergoing polycondensation reactions

The authors extend their earlier work on the stability of a reacting binary polymer blend with respect to demixing [D. J. Read, Macromolecules 31, 899 (1998); P. I. C. Teixeira , Macromolecules 33, 387 (2000)] to the case where one of the polymers is rod-like and may order nematically. As before, the authors combine the random phase approximation for the free energy with a Markov chain model for the chemistry to obtain the spinodal as a function of the relevant degrees of reaction. These are then calculated by assuming a simple second-order chemical kinetics. Results are presented, for linear systems, which illustrate the effects of varying the proportion of coils and rods, their relative sizes, and the strength of the nematic interaction between the rods. Measuring and evaluating the impacts of TOD measures: searching for evidence of TOD characteristics in Azambuja train line

TOD (Transit Oriented Development) is typically defined as a high density mixed area (residential and commercial) within easy walking distance of a high capacity public transport station (typically within an 800m buffer area). TOO is viewed as a set of strategies to increase the use of public transport, increasing walking activity, containing urban sprawl, and creating more liveable places. It is believed that this type of combined strategies will improve sustainable growth. This work is an exploratory work for evidence of TOD characteristics in train station areas in Azambuja train line, setting further methodologies to evaluate the success of TOD areas.
