[RuCl(arene)(-Cl)](2) dimers were treated in a 1:2 molar ratio with sodium or thallium salts of bis- and tris(pyrazolyl)borate ligands [Na(BpBr3)], [Tl(TpBr3)], and [Tl(Tp(iPr,4Br))]. Mononuclear neutral complexes [RuCl(arene)((2)-BpBr3)] (1: arene=p-cymene (cym); 2: arene=hexamethylbenzene (hmb); 3: arene=benzene (bz)), [RuCl(arene)((2)-TpBr3)] (4: arene=cym; 6: arene=bz), and [RuCl(arene)((2)-Tp(iPr,4Br))] (7: arene=cym, 8: arene=hmb, 9: arene=bz) have been always obtained with the exception of the ionic [Ru-2(hmb)(2)(-Cl)(3)][TpBr3] (5), which formed independently of the ratio of reactants and reaction conditions employed. The ionic [Ru(CH3OH)(cym)((2)-BpBr3)][X] (10: X=PF6, 12: X=O3SCF3) and the neutral [Ru(O2CCF3)(cym)((2)-BpBr3)] (11) have been obtained by a metathesis reaction with corresponding silver salts. All complexes 1-12 have been characterized by analytical and spectroscopic data (IR, ESI-MS, H-1 and (CNMR)-C-13 spectroscopy). The structures of the thallium and calcium derivatives of ligand TpBr3, [Tl(TpBr3)] and [Ca(dmso)(6)][TpBr3](2)2DMSO, of the complexes 1, 4, 5, 6, 11, and of the decomposition product [RuCl(cym)(Hpz(iPr,4Br))(2)][Cl] (7) have been confirmed by using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Electrochemical studies showed that 1-9 and 11 undergo a single-electron (RuRuIII)-Ru-II oxidation at a potential, measured by cyclic voltammetry, which allows comparison of the electron-donor characters of the bis- and tris(pyrazol-1-yl)borate and arene ligands, and to estimate, for the first time, the values of the Lever E-L ligand parameter for BpBr3, TpBr3, and Tp(iPr,4Br). Theoretical calculations at the DFT level indicated that both oxidation and reduction of the Ru complexes under study are mostly metal-centered with some involvement of the chloride ligand in the former case, and also demonstrated that the experimental isolation of the (3)-binuclear complex 5 (instead of the mononuclear 5) is accounted for by the low thermodynamic stability of the latter species due to steric reasons.

The ruthenium(II)-cymene complexes [Ru(eta(6)-cymene)(bha)Cl] with substituted halogenobenzohydroxamato (bha) ligands (substituents = 4-F, 4-Cl, 4-Br, 2,4-F-2, 3,4-F-2, 2,5-F-2, 2,6-F-2) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, cyclic voltammetry and controlled-potential electrolysis, and density functional theory (DFT) studies. The compositions of their frontier molecular orbitals (MOs) were established by DFT calculations, and the oxidation and reduction potentials are shown to follow the orders of the estimated vertical ionization potential and electron affinity, respectively. The electrochemical E-L Lever parameter is estimated for the first time for the various bha ligands, which can thus be ordered according to their electron-donor character. All complexes exhibit very strong protein tyrosine kinase (PTK) inhibitory activity, even much higher than that of genistein, the clinically used PTK inhibitory drug. The complex containing the 2,4-difluorobenzohydroxamato ligand is the most active one, and the dependences of the PTK activity of the complexes and of their redox potentials on the ring substituents are discussed. Solvatochromic UV-Vis shifts of four indicators (4-nitroaniline, 4-nitroanisole, 4-nitrophenol and N,N-dimethy-1-4-nitro aniline) have been measured at 298.15 K in the ternary mixture methano1/1-propanol/acetonitrile (MeOH/1-PrOH/MeCN) in a total of 22 mole fractions, along with 18 additional mole fractions for each of the corresponding binary mixtures, MeOH/1-PrOH, 1-PrOH/MeCN and MeOH/MeCN. These values, combined with our previous experimental results for 2,6-dipheny1-4-(2,4,6-triphenylpyridinium-1-yl)phenolate (Reichardt's betaine dye) in the same mixtures, permitted the computation of the Kamlet-Taft solvent parameters, alpha, beta, and pi*. The rationalization of the spectroscopic behavior of each probe within each mixture's whole mole fraction range was achieved through the use of the Bosch and Roses preferential solvation model. The applied model allowed the identification of synergistic behaviors in MeCN/alcohol mixtures and thus to infer the existence of solvent complexes in solution. Also, the addition of small amounts of MeCN to the binary mixtures was seen to cause a significant variation in pi*, whereas the addition of alcohol to MeCN mixtures always lead to a sudden change in a and The behavior of these parameters in the ternary mixture was shown to be mainly determined by the contributions of the underlying binary mixtures. The evolution of the topography of titanium surfaces treated with femtosecond laser radiation in stationary conditions as a function of radiation fluence and number of laser pulses is investigated. Depending on the processing parameters, ripples, microcolumns, wavy or smooth surfaces can be obtained. The ripples predominate for fluences near the damage threshold of titanium (0.2+/-0.1) J/cm(2), while microcolumns form during the first 200 pulses for fluences between (0.6+/-0.2) and (1.7+/-0.2) J/cm(2). A wavy topography develops for fluences and number of pulses higher than (1.7+/-0.2) J/cm(2) and 300, respectively. A bimodal surface topography consisting of surface ripples overlapping a microcolumnar topography can be obtained if the surfaces are firstly treated to create microcolumns followed by laser treatment with a lower fluence near the ablation threshold of the material, in order to generate periodic ripple

The surface morphology, structure and composition of human dentin treated with a femtosecond infrared laser (pulse duration 500 fs, wavelength 1030 nm, fluences ranging from 1 to 3 J cm(-2)) was studied by scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The average dentin ablation threshold under these conditions was 0.6 +/- 0.2 J cm(-2) and the ablation rate achieved in the range 1 to 2 mu m/pulse for an average fluence of 3 J cm(-2). The ablation surfaces present an irregular and rugged appearance, with no significant traces of melting, deformation, cracking or carbonization. The smear layer was entirely removed by the laser treatment. For fluences only slightly higher than the ablation threshold the morphology of the laser-treated surfaces was very similar to the dentin fracture surfaces and the dentinal tubules remained open. For higher fluences, the surface was more porous and the dentin structure was partially concealed by ablation debris and a few resolidified droplets. Independently on the laser processing parameters and laser processing method used no sub-superficial cracking was observed. The dentin constitution and chemical composition was not significantly modified by the laser treatment in the processing parameter range used. In particular, the organic matter is not preferentially removed from the surface and no traces of high temperature phosphates, such as the beta-tricalcium phosphate, were observed. The achieved results are compatible with an electrostatic ablation mechanism. In conclusion, the high beam quality and short pulse duration of the ultrafast laser used should allow the accurate preparation of cavities, with negligible damage of the underlying material.

Solubility measurements of quinizarin. (1,4-dihydroxyanthraquinone), disperse red 9 (1-(methylamino) anthraquinone), and disperse blue 14 (1,4-bis(methylamino)anthraquinone) in supercritical carbon dioxide (SC CO2) were carried out in a flow type apparatus, at a temperature range from (333.2 to 393.2) K and at pressures from (12.0 to 40.0) MPa. Mole fraction solubility of the three dyes decreases in the order quinizarin (2.9 x 10(-6) to 2.9.10(-4)), red 9 (1.4 x 10(-6) to 3.2 x 10(-4)), and blue 14 (7.8 x 10(-8) to 2.2 x 10(-5)). Four semiempirical density based models were used to correlatethe solubility of the dyes in the SC CO2. From the correlation results, the total heat of reaction, heat of vaporization plus the heat of solvation of the solute, were calculated and compared with the results presented in the literature. The solubilities of the three dyes were correlated also applying the Soave-Redlich-Kwong cubic equation of state (SRK CEoS) with classical mixing rules, and the physical properties required for the modeling were estimated and reported.

Two multinuclear complexes [Fe-6(mu(3)-O)(2)(mu(4)-O-2)L-10(OAc)(2)(H2O)(2)]center dot 2.625Et(2)O center dot 2.375H(2)O (1) and [(Fe11Cl)-Cl-III-(mu(4)-O)(3)(mu(3)-O)(5)L-16(dmf)(2.5)(H2O)(0.5)]center dot Et2O center dot 1.25dmf center dot 3.8H(2)O (2), where HL = 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzoic acid and dmf = dimethylformamide, have been prepared from trinuclear iron(III) carboxylates via their structural rearrangement in dimethylformamide or diethyl ether-dimethylformamide 9:1, respectively, and slow vapor diffusion of diethyl ether into the reaction mixture. Both compounds have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, optical, Mossbauer spectroscopy, and magnetic measurements. Complex 1 possesses a hexanuclear ferric peroxido-dioxido {Fe-6(O-2)(O)(2)}(12+) core unit, which adopts a recliner conformation, while complex 2 contains an unprecedented {Fe11O8Cl}(16+) core, in which 9 ferric ions are six-coordinate and the remaining two are five-coordinate. Another structural feature of note of the undecanuclear core is the presence of a deformed cubane entity {Fe-4(mu(3)-O)(mu(4)-O)(3)}(4+). Both complexes act as catalyst precursors for the oxidation of cyclohexane to cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone with aqueous H2O2, in the presence of pyrazinecarboxylic acid. Remarkable TONs and TOFs (the latter mainly for 1) with concomitant quite good yields have been achieved under mild conditions. Moreover, 1 exhibits remarkably high activity in an exceptionally short reaction time (45 min), being unprecedented for any metal catalyzed alkane oxidation by H2O2. The catalytic reactions proceed via Fenton type chemistry.

The fatty acid profile of erythrocyte membranes has been considered a good biomarker for several pathologic situations. Dietary intake, digestion, absorption, metabolism, storage and exchange amongst compartments, greatly influence the fatty acids composition of different cells and tissues. Lipoprotein and hepatic lipases were also involved in fatty acid availability. In the present work we examined the correlations between fatty acid in Red Blood Cells (RBCs) membranes, the fatty acid desaturase and elongase activities, glycaemia, blood lipids, lipoproteins and apoproteins, and the endothelial lipase (EL) mass in plasma. Twenty one individuals were considered in the present study, with age >18 y. RBCs membranes were obtained and analysed for fatty acid composition by gas chromatography. The amount of fatty acids (as percentage) were analysed, and the ratios between fatty acid 16:1/16:0; 18:1/18:0; 18:0/16:0; 22:6 n-3/20:5 n-3 and 20:4 n-6/18:2 n-6 were calculated. Bivariate analysis (rs) and partial correlations were determined. SCD16 estimation activity correlated positively with BMI (rs=0.466, p=0.043) and triacylglycerols (TAG) (rs=0.483, p=0.026), and negatively with the ratio ApoA1/ApoB (rs=-0.566, p=0.007). Endothelial lipase (EL) correlated positively with the EPA/AA ratio in RBCs membranes (rs=0.524, p=0.045). After multi-adjustment for BMI, age, hs-CRP and dietary n3/n6 ratio, the correlations remained significant between EL and EPA/AA ratio. At the best of our knowledge this is the first report that correlated EL with the fatty acid profile of RBCs plasma membranes. The association found here can suggest that the enzyme may be involved in the bioavailability and distribution of n-3/n-6 fatty acids, suggesting a major role for EL in the pathophysiological mechanisms involving biomembranes’ fatty acids, such as in inflammatory response and eicosanoids metabolites pathways.

The potential of the electrocardiographic (ECG) signal as a biometric trait has been ascertained in the literature over the past decade. The inherent characteristics of the ECG make it an interesting biometric modality, given its universality, intrinsic aliveness detection, continuous availability, and inbuilt hidden nature. These properties enable the development of novel applications, where non-intrusive and continuous authentication are critical factors. Examples include, among others, electronic trading platforms, the gaming industry, and the auto industry, in particular for car sharing programs and fleet management solutions. However, there are still some challenges to overcome in order to make the ECG a widely accepted biometric. In particular, the questions of uniqueness (inter-subject variability) and permanence over time (intra-subject variability) are still largely unanswered. In this paper we focus on the uniqueness question, presenting a preliminary study of our biometric recognition system, testing it on a database encompassing 618 subjects. We also performed tests with subsets of this population. The results reinforce that the ECG is a viable trait for biometrics, having obtained an Equal Error Rate of 9.01% and an Error of Identification of 15.64% for the entire test population.

New highly fluorescent calix[4]arene-containing phenylene-alt-ethynylene-3,6- and 2,7-carbazolylene polymers (CALIX-PPE-CBZs) have been synthesized for the first time and their photophysical properties evaluated. Both polymers were obtained in good isolated yields (70-84%), having M-w ranging from 7660-26,700 g mol(-1). It was found that the diethynyl substitution (3,6- or 2,7-) pattern on the carbazole monomers markedly influences the degree of polymerization. The amorphous yellow polymers are freely soluble in several nonprotic organic solvents and have excellent film forming abilities. TG/DSC analysis evidences similar thermal behaviors for both polymers despite their quite different molecular weight distributions and main-chain connectivities (T-g, in the range 83-95 degrees C and decomposition onsets around 270 degrees C). The different conjugation lengths attained by the two polymers dictates much of their photophysical properties. Thus, whereas the fully conjugated CALIX-PPE-2,7-CBZ has its emission maximum at 430 nm (E-g = 2.84 eV; Phi(F) = 0.62, CHCl3), the 3,6-linked counterpart (CALIX-PPE-3,6-CBZ) fluoresces at 403 nm with a significant lower quantum yield (E-g = 3.06 eV; Phi(F) = 0.31, CHCl3). The optical properties of both polymers are predominantly governed by the intrachain electronic properties of the conjugated backbones owing to the presence of calix[4]arenes along the polymer chain which disfavor significant interchain interactions, either in fluid- or solid-state.

This paper provides a two-stage stochastic programming approach for the development of optimal offering strategies for wind power producers. Uncertainty is related to electricity market prices and wind power production. A hybrid intelligent approach, combining wavelet transform, particle swarm optimization and adaptive-network-based fuzzy inference system, is used in this paper to generate plausible scenarios. Also, risk aversion is explicitly modeled using the conditional value-at-risk methodology. Results from a realistic case study, based on a wind farm in Portugal, are provided and analyzed. Finally, conclusions are duly drawn.
