Materials selection is a matter of great importance to engineering design and software tools are valuable to inform decisions in the early stages of product development. However, when a set of alternative materials is available for the different parts a product is made of, the question of what optimal material mix to choose for a group of parts is not trivial. The engineer/designer therefore goes about this in a part-by-part procedure. Optimizing each part per se can lead to a global sub-optimal solution from the product point of view. An optimization procedure to deal with products with multiple parts, each with discrete design variables, and able to determine the optimal solution assuming different objectives is therefore needed. To solve this multiobjective optimization problem, a new routine based on Direct MultiSearch (DMS) algorithm is created. Results from the Pareto front can help the designer to align his/hers materials selection for a complete set of materials with product attribute objectives, depending on the relative importance of each objective.

Processes are a central entity in enterprise collaboration. Collaborative processes need to be executed and coordinated in a distributed Computational platform where computers are connected through heterogeneous networks and systems. Life cycle management of such collaborative processes requires a framework able to handle their diversity based on different computational and communication requirements. This paper proposes a rational for such framework, points out key requirements and proposes it strategy for a supporting technological infrastructure. Beyond the portability of collaborative process definitions among different technological bindings, a framework to handle different life cycle phases of those definitions is presented and discussed. A utilização de placas de OSB – Oriented Strand Board está em franca expansão no território nacional e parece ser uma alternativa ecológica e económica aos painéis de derivados de madeira normalmente usados. O OSB é obtido num processo de fabrico resultante da interacção de diversas variáveis, que conferem aos painéis uma vasta gama de aplicações estruturais ou não estruturais (paredes exteriores e interiores, pavimentos, coberturas, componentes de vigas, cofragens, embalagens, móveis, elementos de decoração, etc.). Neste trabalho pretendeu-se investigar, através de pesquisa bibliográfica as características das placas OSB assim como seu processo de fabrico e condicionantes existentes no seu decurso. Em seguida estas foram comparadas com os seus principais concorrentes, o contraplacado e o aglomerado de madeira e cimento. O trabalho experimental realizado teve como objectivo analisar as propriedades de OSB, proveniente do mercado nacional, de acordo com a EN 300:2006 e com os dados recolhidos na pesquisa bibliográfica. Foram executados ensaios de flexão (EN 310:2002), inchamento em espessura (EN 317:2002) e ensaios de flexão após envelhecimento (EN 321:2010). Concluiu-se que o OSB é um material com algumas características de destaque, no entanto a substituição de outros derivados de madeira por este deve ser acompanhada por estudos, principalmente em ambientes húmidos. É importante realçar que este possui modelos com características específicas para determinadas utilizações e ambientes que possibilitam uma optimização do seu comportamento, no entanto, nos ensaios realizados apenas foi utilizado um modelo base de OSB.

Integrated manufacturing constitutes a complex system made of heterogeneous information and control subsystems. Those subsystems are not designed to the cooperation. Typically each subsystem automates specific processes, and establishes closed application domains, therefore it is very difficult to integrate it with other subsystems in order to respond to the needed process dynamics. Furthermore, to cope with ever growing marketcompetition and demands, it is necessary for manufacturing/enterprise systems to increase their responsiveness based on up-to-date knowledge and in-time data gathered from the diverse information and control systems. These have created new challenges for manufacturing sector, and even bigger challenges for collaborative manufacturing. The growing complexity of the information and communication technologies when coping with innovative business services based on collaborative contributions from multiple stakeholders, requires novel and multidisciplinary approaches. Service orientation is a strategic approach to deal with such complexity, and various stakeholders' information systems. Services or more precisely the autonomous computational agents implementing the services, provide an architectural pattern able to cope with the needs of integrated and distributed collaborative solutions. This paper proposes a service-oriented framework, aiming to support a virtual organizations breeding environment that is the basis for establishing short or long term goal-oriented virtual organizations. The notion of integrated business services, where customers receive some value developed through the contribution from a network of companies is a key element.

In the field of appearance-based robot localization, the mainstream approach uses a quantized representation of local image features. An alternative strategy is the exploitation of raw feature descriptors, thus avoiding approximations due to quantization. In this work, the quantized and non-quantized representations are compared with respect to their discriminativity, in the context of the robot global localization problem. Having demonstrated the advantages of the non-quantized representation, the paper proposes mechanisms to reduce the computational burden this approach would carry, when applied in its simplest form. This reduction is achieved through a hierarchical strategy which gradually discards candidate locations and by exploring two simplifying assumptions about the training data. The potential of the non-quantized representation is exploited by resorting to the entropy-discriminativity relation. The idea behind this approach is that the non-quantized representation facilitates the assessment of the distinctiveness of features, through the entropy measure. Building on this finding, the robustness of the localization system is enhanced by modulating the importance of features according to the entropy measure. Experimental results support the effectiveness of this approach, as well as the validity of the proposed computation reduction methods.
