Multilevel power converters have been introduced as the solution for high-power high-voltage switching applications where they have well-known advantages. Recently, full back-to-back connected multilevel neutral point diode clamped converters (NPC converter) have been used inhigh-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems. Bipolar-connected back-to-back NPC converters have advantages in long-distance HVDCtransmission systems over the full back-to-back connection, but greater difficulty to balance the dc capacitor voltage divider on both sending and receiving end NPC converters. This study shows that power flow control and dc capacitor voltage balancing are feasible using fast optimum-predictive-based controllers in HVDC systems using bipolar back-to-back-connected five-level NPC multilevel converters. For both converter sides, the control strategytakes in account active and reactive power, which establishes ac grid currents in both ends, and guarantees the balancing of dc bus capacitor voltages inboth NPC converters. Additionally, the semiconductor switching frequency is minimised to reduce switching losses. The performance and robustness of the new fast predictive control strategy, and its capability to solve the DC capacitor voltage balancing problem of bipolar-connected back-to-back NPCconverters are evaluated.

Voltage source multilevel power converter structures are being considered for high power high voltage applications where they have well known advantages. Furthermore, the fast predictivecontroller minimizes the semiconductor switching frequency to reduce global switching losses. This paper presents a direct power control (DPC) for three-phase matrix converters operating as unified power flow controllers (UPFCs). Matrix converters (MCs) allow the direct ac/ac power conversion without dc energy storage links; therefore, the MC-based UPFC (MC-UPFC) has reduced volume and cost, reduced capacitor power losses, together with higher reliability. Theoretical principles of direct power control (DPC) based on sliding mode control techniques are established for an MC-UPFC dynamic model including the input filter. As a result, line active and reactive power, together with ac supply reactive power, can be directly controlled by selecting an appropriate matrix converter switching state guaranteeing good steady-state and dynamic responses. Experimental results of DPC controllers for MC-UPFC show decoupled active and reactive power control, zero steady-state tracking error, and fast response times. Compared to an MC-UPFC using active and reactive power linear controllers based on a modified Venturini high-frequency PWM modulator, the experimental results of the advanced DPC-MC guarantee faster responses without overshoot and no steady-state error, presenting no cross-coupling in dynamic and steady-state responses.

As wind power generation undergoes rapid growth, new technical challenges emerge: dynamic stability and power quality. The influence of wind speed disturbances and a pitch control malfunction on the quality of the energy injected into the electric grid is studied for variable-speed wind turbines with different power-electronic converter topologies. Additionally, a new control strategy is proposed for the variable-speed operation of wind turbines with permanent magnet synchronous generators. The performance of disturbance attenuation and system robustness is ascertained. Simulation results are presented and conclusions are duly drawn. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper is on variable-speed wind turbines with permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). Three different drive train mass models and three different topologies for the power-electronic converters are considered. The three different topologies considered are respectively a matrix, a two-level and a multilevel converter. A novel control strategy, based on fractional-order controllers, is proposed for the wind turbines. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the behaviour of the wind turbines during a converter control malfunction, considering the fractional-order controllers. Como recurso natural fundamental à vida, a água e os ecossistemas aquáticos devem ser alvo de avaliação contínua, no que se reporta à sua qualidade física, química e biológica. Segundo a Organização Mundial de Saúde cerca de 1,1 biliões de pessoas estão impossibilitadas em aceder a qualquer tipo de água potável e, as populações residentes nas proximidades de rios, lagoas, e reservatórios utilizam estas águas para as suas necessidades de consumo, aumentando o risco de transmissão de doenças. Enquanto constituintes da comunidade fitoplanctónica, as cianobactérias são microrganismos procariotas, fotossintéticos, que obtêm os nutrientes diretamente da coluna de água e, um aumento da concentração de nutrientes (principalmente azoto e fósforo), associado a condições ambientais favoráveis, pode desencadear um crescimento rápido originando fluorescências. Sob determinadas condições as cianobactérias podem produzir toxinas existindo registos que evidenciam que fluorescências toxicas são responsáveis pelo envenenamento agudo e morte de animais e humanos pelo que, a água utilizada para consumo humano deverá ser regularmente monitorizada para este elemento biológico. O objetivo deste estudo é relacionar a ocorrência de fluorescências de cianobactérias (> 2000 cel/ml) e toxicidade associada, com o impacte potencial na Saúde Pública avaliado através do consumo direto ou indireto da água. Em Portugal foram selecionados oito reservatórios situados na região Sul, pertencentes às bacias hidrográficas do Sado e Guadiana e estudados entre 2000 e 2008. No Brasil foram selecionados os reservatórios de Três Marias (Estado de Minas Gerais) e de Tucuruí (Estado do Pará) e estudados em 2005 e 2006 respetivamente. Os reservatórios foram caracterizados em termos físicos e químicos, tendo-se igualmente procedido à caracterização da comunidade fitoplanctónica através da identificação e quantificação dos principais grupos presentes em diferentes épocas do ano. Em termos fitoplanctónicos os reservatórios portugueses apresentaram maior diversidade,verificando-se contudo dominância das cianobactérias na comunidade. Associados a fluorescências, foram registados nestes reservatórios géneros produtores de hepato e neurotoxinas como Aphanizomenon sp, Microcystis aeruginosa e Oscillatoria sp. No Brasil, em situação de fluorescências, os géneros produtores de neuro e hepatotoxinas foram Microcystis (> 350.000 cels/ml) e Cylindrospermopsis. A presença destes géneros, poderá constituir um risco potencial para a saúde pública, pelo que é importante a implementação de medidas de mitigação em todos os reservatórios objeto de estudo, devendo essa atuação passar pelo controle do estado trófico no sentido de evitar o desenvolvimento de fluorescências. Assim sugere-se a implementação de um tratamento adequado para a produção de água de consumo e a organização de ações de sensibilização e aviso e informação às populações que utilizam os reservatórios em Portugal e no Brasil para diversos usos. - ABSTRACT - As a life fundamental natural resource, water and aquatic ecosystems must be continuously evaluated in their physical, chemical and biological quality. According World Health Organization, 1.1 billion people has no chance to access any kind of potable water. Populations living near rivers, lagoons or reservoirs use those waters to content their needs, increasing risks disease transmission. As members of phytoplankton community, cyanobacteria are prokaryotic, photosynthetic microorganisms and get its nutrients directly from water column. The increase of this nutrients (especially nitrogen and phosphorus) associated with favorable environment conditions, can support a sudden grow and instigate blooms. Under specific conditions cyanobacteria can produce toxins and several records have shown that toxic blooms are responsible by acute poisoning and death in animals and humans so, water for human consumption must be regularly surveyed for this biologic element. The aim of this study is to correlate Cyanobacteria blooms (>2.000cels/ml) and connected toxicity with public health impact, evaluated through water consumption. In Portugal, eight reservoirs located in the South region were selected and study between 2000 and 2008. In Brazil, Três Marias reservoir (Minas Gerais Provence) and Tucuruí (Pará Provence) were selected and study in 2005 and 2006. Reservoirs were characterized in physical and chemical aspects, as well as phytoplankton community, through identification and counting of main present groups along study period. In bloom circumstances, liver toxins and neurotoxins producers like Aphanizomenon sp, Microcystis aeruginosa and Oscillatoria sp. were founded in Portuguese reservoirs. In Brazil, cyanobacteria genera involved in toxic bloom were Microcystis (> 350.000 cels/ml) and Cylindrospermopsis. This genera presence represents a potential risk for public health, and show the requirement to implement mitigation measures in all study reservoirs. These measures can be represented by water eutrophication control to avoid blooms, by appropriate treatments of water to human consumption, and public warnings or information to dose people in Portugal and Brazil that use these reservoirs to several activities.

This paper presents a distributed model predictive control (DMPC) for indoor thermal comfort that simultaneously optimizes the consumption of a limited shared energy resource. The control objective of each subsystem is to minimize the heating/cooling energy cost while maintaining the indoor temperature and used power inside bounds. In a distributed coordinated environment, the control uses multiple dynamically decoupled agents (one for each subsystem/house) aiming to achieve satisfaction of coupling constraints. According to the hourly power demand profile, each house assigns a priority level that indicates how much is willing to bid in auction for consume the limited clean resource. This procedure allows the bidding value vary hourly and consequently, the agents order to access to the clean energy also varies. Despite of power constraints, all houses have also thermal comfort constraints that must be fulfilled. The system is simulated with several houses in a distributed environment.

Multilayered heterostructures based on embedded a-Si:H and a-SiC:H p-i-n filters are analyzed from differential voltage design perspective using short- and long-pass filters. The transfer functions characteristics are presented. A numerical simulation is presented to explain the filtering properties of the photonic devices. Several monochromatic pulsed lights, separately (input channels) or in a polychromatic mixture (multiplexed signal) at different bit rates, illuminated the device. Steady-state optical bias is superimposed from the front and the back side. Results show that depending on the wavelength of the external background and impinging side, the device acts either as a short- or a long-pass band filter or as a band-stop filter. Particular attention is given to the amplification coefficient weights, which allow to take into account the wavelength background effects when a band or frequency needs to be filtered or the gate switch, in which optical active filter gates are used to select and filter input signals to specific output ports in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) communication systems. This nonlinearity provides the possibility for selective removal or addition of wavelengths. A truth table of an encoder that performs 8-to-1 MUX function exemplifies the optoelectronic conversion.

One of the most effective ways of controlling vibrations in plate or beam structures is by means of constrained viscoelastic damping treatments. Contrary to the unconstrained configuration, the design of constrained and integrated layer damping treatments is multifaceted because the thickness of the viscoelastic layer acts distinctly on the two main counterparts of the strain energy the volume of viscoelastic material and the shear strain field. In this work, a parametric study is performed exploring the effect that the design parameters, namely the thickness/length ratio, constraining layer thickness, material modulus, natural mode and boundary conditions have on these two counterparts and subsequently, on the treatment efficiency. This paper presents five parametric studies, namely, the thickness/length ratio, the constraining layer thickness, material properties, natural mode and boundary conditions. The results obtained evidence an interesting effect when dealing with very thin viscoelastic layers that contradicts the standard treatment efficiency vs. layer thickness relation; hence, the potential optimisation of constrained and integrated viscoelastic treatments through the use of properly designed thin multilayer configurations is justified. This work presents a dimensionless analysis and provides useful general guidelines for the efficient design of constrained and integrated damping treatments based on single or multi-layer configurations. This paper presents a new driving scheme utilizing an in-pixel metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) photosensor for luminance control of active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) pixel. The proposed 3-TFT circuit is controlled by an external driver performing the signal readout, processing, and programming operations according to a luminance adjusting algorithm. To maintain the fabrication simplicity, the embedded MIS photosensor shares the same layer stack with pixel TFTs. Performance characteristics of the MIS structure with a nc-Si : H/a-Si : H bilayer absorber were measured and analyzed to prove the concept. The observed transient dark current is associated with charge trapping at the insulator-semiconductor interface that can be largely eliminated by adjusting the bias voltage during the refresh cycle. Other factors limiting the dynamic range and external quantum efficiency are also determined and verified using a small-signal model of the device. Experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the MIS photosensor for the discussed driving scheme.

This paper reports on the structural and optical properties of Co-doped TiO2 thin films grown onto (0001)Al2O3 substrates by non-reactive pulsed laser deposition (PLD) using argon as buffer gas. It is shown that by keeping constant the substrate temperature at as low as 310 degrees C and varying only the background gas pressure between 7 Pa and 70 Pa, it is possible to grow either epitaxial rutile or pure anatase thin films, as well as films with a mixture of both polymorphs. The optical band gaps of the films are red shifted in comparison with the values usually reported for undoped TiO2, which is consistent with n-type doping of the TiO2 matrix. Such band gap red shift brings the absorption edge of the Co-doped TiO2 films into the visible region, which might favour their photocatalytic activity. Furthermore, the band gap red shift depends on the films' phase composition, increasing with the increase of the Urbach energy for increasing rutile content. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Objectives - Evaluate the nutritional status of patients with inactive or mildly active Crohn's disease (CD), and identify possible causes for potential deficiencies. Methods - A total of 78 CD patients and 80 healthy controls were evaluated in respect of nutritional status, dietary intake, and life styles factors. Results - These 73/78 CD patients were on immunomodulating therapies. Mean body mass index (BMI) was lower in patients as compared to controls (P= 0.006) but 32% of CD patients and 33.8% of controls had a BMI > 25, whereas 8% and 23.8% in each group, respectively, were obese (BMI > 30Kg/m(2)). Fat free mass was significantly decreased in both genders (P < 0.05) whereas fat mass was decreased only in males (P= 0.01). Energy intake was significantly lower in CD patients (P < 0.0001) and we observed significantly lower adjusted mean daily intakes of carbohydrates, monounsaturated fat, fiber, calcium, and vitamins C, D, E, and K (P < 0.05). 29% of patients had excluded grains from their usual diet, 28% milk, 18% vegetables, and 11% fruits. Milk exclusion resulted in a significantly lower consumption of calcium and vitamin K (P < 0.001) and the exclusion of vegetables was associated to a lower consumption of vitamins C and E (P < 0.05). Physical activity was significantly lower in CD patients (P= 0.01) and this lack of physical activity was inversely correlated with increased fat mass percentage (r=-0.315, P= 0.001). Conclusions - Results showed that the most prevalent form of malnutrition in CD patients was an excess of body weight, which was concomitant with an inadequate dietary intake, namely micronutrients, clearly related to dietary exclusion of certain foods.
