To think museology today

In the present text we intend to analyse 5 basic documents that translate the Museological Thinking in our century and that, chiefly, have led professionals of the area to apply this “science” in a less hermetic way and to understand its practice. The option to study and analyse the documents results from the fact that they influence present day museological practice and thinking. It is impossible to speak of museology nowadays without referring to one of these documents, not to mention a few nations that have even modified and/or created specific laws for the management of their preservationist cultural policy. Anyway, we are aware that this text intends only to carry out a preliminary approach to the documents, in the sense that the wealth of its content would allow us to slowx over an infinity of issues that they raise. I specifically refer to the documents produced at UNESCO Regional Seminar on the Role of Museums in Education, which took place in Rio de Janeiro in 1958; at the Santiago Round Table in 1972, in Chile; at the 1rst New Museology International Workshop, in Quebec, Canada, 1984; at the Oaxtepec Meeting, in Mexico 1984; and at the Caracas Meeting in 1992. These are documents elaborated within the ICOM –International Council of Museums. These documents are the result of a joint reflection by professionals who seek the evolution of ideas within their areas of action, recognising that in order to do so it is necessary to leave the cocoon of the museological institutions and try to discuss their conceptual advances with professionals of related areas. It is important to be capacitated to reuse these advances in their areas of action. This is the recognition of the importance of interdisciplinarity for the museological context.

Le changement et les institutions culturelles et muséologiques : L’ICOM et le changement

Je remercie Raul Mendez Lugo, le Président de MINOM et Alfredo Tinoco, le Président de MINOM-Portugal… Mesdames et messieurs, amis et collègues, c’est un honneur de représenter le Conseil international des musées aujourd’hui ici à Lisbonne pour l’ouverture d’un atelier qui promet d’être fructueux et instructif de tous les points de vue, notamment en nous esquissant les grandes lignes d’actions à mener en plus étroite collaboration. Parmi les musées que les participants à cet atelier pourraient visiter dimanche, nous prenons note du “Museu nacional do azulejo” et de l’écomusée “Ecomuseu do Seixal”. D’une part, un musée national présente à un public international une forme d’artisanat traditionnel et mondialement connu par des moyens muséologiques contemporains et d’autre part une communauté qui a fondé et qui gère l’écomusée s’attache à son patrimoine au sein de son territoire.

Manual de Normas : documentando os acervos africanos (Tradução)

Tradução para português de “Handbook of Standards. Documenting African Collections” International Council of African Museums AFRICOM & International Committee for Documentation (CIDOC) - ICOM / Culturália / TERCUD-ULHT. A tradução para português do “Manual de Normas – Documentando Acervos Africanos” o qual foi em boa hora realizado pelo AFRICOM – Conselho Internacional dos Museus Africanos, vem facilitar a imensa tarefa dos Museus dos países de língua portuguesa em favor da defesa e da valorização dos patrimónios culturais em particular no domínio da Documentação Museológica. Trata-se de disponibilizar um importante recurso de trabalho destinado a apoiar, tanto os museus existentes á data da Independência, como aqueles que desde então foram criados, não só nas grandes cidades mas também nos municípios mais afastados e com menos recursos. No momento em que se edita este manual, importa prestar a devida homenagem a todos aqueles, profissionais de museologia e amigos dos museus, que durante os muitos anos de guerra civil souberam manter esses museus abertos e salvaguardar suas colecções em condições de extrema dificuldade, contra a violência daqueles que tentaram impedir por todos os meios que Angola, Moçambique e mais tarde a Guiné-Bissau, seguissem o caminho da paz e do progresso após a Independência. Este manual ajudará, certamente, à organização, o controlo e à gestão das coleções que sempre ocuparão um lugar central nos Museus, quer se trate de Museus mais tradicionais ou de Museus mais envolvidos com o desenvolvimento local e nos quais as colecções são, sobretudo, um referencial de identidade e uma razão para criar parcerias e redes para a paz e o progresso da inclusão social.

The local population and museums. An analysis based on the use of museums in the Alt Pirineu and Aran Region (Catalonia, Spain)

His paper is based on a study of visitors to the museums in the Alt Pirineu and Aran region (Catalonia, Spain). We describe the characteristics of the museums’ users and analyse the relationship between the museums and the local community. We highlight the importance of these facilities for local development, and the need to consider and prioritize their role as culture centres for the region’s population.
