LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS IN THE CONTEXT OF A MASTER DEGREE IN ANIMATION AND ILLUSTRATION

This paper aims to describe the processes of teaching illustration and animation, together, in the context of a masters degree program. In Portugal, until very recently, illustration and animation higher education courses, were very scarce and only provided by a few private universities, which offered separated programs - either illustration or animation. The MA in Illustration and Animation (MIA) based in the Instituto Politécnico do Cávado e Ave in Portugal, dared to join these two creative areas in a common learning model and is already starting it’s third edition with encouraging results and will be supported by the first international conference on illustration and animation (CONFIA). This masters program integrates several approaches and techniques (in illustration and animation) and integrates and encourages creative writing and critique writing. This paper describes the iterative process of construction, and implementation of the program as well as the results obtained on the initial years of existence in terms of pedagogic and learning conclusions. In summary, we aim to compare pedagogic models of animation or illustration teaching in higher education opposed to a more contemporary and multidisciplinary model approach that integrates the two - on an earlier stage - and allows them to be developed separately – on the second part of the program. This is based on the differences and specificities of animation (from classic techniques to 3D) and illustration (drawing the illustration) and the intersection area of these two subjects within the program structure focused on the students learning and competencies acquired to use in professional or authorial projects.

Afinal, ficamos a saber que a austeridade, tantas vezes chumbada no Tribunal Constitucional, era uma estratégia para investir na Investigação, Ciência e Inovação europeias! É uma boa altura para aumentar, de modo justo e proporcional, todos os orçamentos de todas as universidades e politécnicos portugueses, os quais têm relações privilegiadas com África, Brasil e parte da Ásia, uma evidente mais-valia para a União Europeia! Abstract: After all, we learn that the austerity so often sinker in the Constitutional Court, was a strategy to invest in Research, Science and European Innovation! It is a good time to increase, fair and proportionate manner, all the budgets of all Portuguese universities and polytechnics, which have a special relationship with Africa, Brazil and parts of Asia, an asset apparent to the European Union!

Automation & control remote laboratory: evaluating a cooperative methodology

This paper presents a study carried out in order to evaluate the students' perception in the development and use of remote Control and Automation education kits developed by two Universities. Three projects, based on real world environments, were implemented, being local and remotely operated. Students implemented the kits using the theoretical and practical knowledge, being the teachers a catalyst in the learning process. When kits were operational, end-user students got acquainted to the kits in the course curricula units. It is the author's believe that successful results were achieved not only in the learning progress on the Automation and Control fields (hard skills) but also on the development of the students soft skills, leading to encouraging and rewarding goals, motivating their future decisions and promoting synergies in their work. The design of learning experimental kits by students, under teacher supervision, for future use in course curricula by enduser students is an advantageous and rewarding experience.

Legalidade do Júri do Doutoramento

Qualquer coincidência com a realidade é pura coincidência, ciência. Chegou-nos aos ouvidos por voz credível que haveria quem no Minho defendesse, e passamos a citar, qualquer coisa como: os professores dos institutos politécnicos e os professores de universidades de baixa reputação não deverão fazer parte de júris para provas de doutoramento em determinada Universidade…. Se isto é verdade – além da difamação que pode gerar responsabilidade judicial e civil para os seus autores (quem te avisa, teu amigo é!) -, salvo o devido respeito e amizade, é violador da legislação que, no Estado de Direito, regula a constituição de júris para provas de doutoramento. Se dúvidas existirem, veja-se o art. 34º do DL nº 115/2013, de 7/8 § Any coincidence with reality is purely coincidental, science. We reached our ears by credible voice that there would be anyone in the Minho defend, and we quote, something like: teachers of polytechnics and teachers of low-reputation universities should not be part of juries for PhD exams in certain University .... If this is true - in addition to the defamation that can generate judicial and civil liability for their authors (who warns you, your friend is!) - Unless due respect and friendship, is in breach of legislation, the rule of law, regulates the constitution of juries for doctoral exams. Use of Performance Measurement in the Public Sector: the case of the police service

Many public organisations have been under great pressure in recent years to increase the efficiency and transparency of outputs, to rationalise the use of public resources, and to increase the quality of service delivery. In this context, public organisations were encouraged to introduce the New Public Management reforms with the goal of improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the performance organisation through a new public management model. This new public management model is based on measurement by outputs and outcomes, a clear definition of responsibilities, the transparency and accountability of governmental activities, and on a greater value for citizens. What type of performance measurement systems are used in police services? Based on the literature, we see that multidimensional models, such as the Balanced Scorecard, are important in many public organisations, like municipalities, universities, and hospitals. Police services are characterised by complex, diverse objectives and stakeholders. Therefore, performance measurement of these public services calls for a specific analysis. Based on a nationwide survey of all police chiefs of the Portuguese police force, we find that employee performance measurement is the main form of measurement. Also, we propose a strategic map for the Portuguese police service.
