The superiority of Africanized over European honey bees in tropical and subtropical regions of the New World is both well documented and poorly understood. As part of an effort to try to understand the process by which the displacement of European bees occurred, we examined the ability of these two types of bees and of hybrids between the two to convert natural and artificial diets into usable protein. Newly emerged bees from colonies of tropically adapted Africanized and temperate-origin Carniolan bees and first-generation hybrids between the two were caged and fed artificial and natural protein diets for six days to determine whether there were differences in their ability to use these diets. The Africanized bees developed significantly higher protein levels in the hemolymph than did the Carniolan bees. The difference was 31% when the bees were fed bee bread (37.5 and 28.56 mu g protein/mu L hemolymph, respectively). The hybrids developed protein levels intermediate between the two parental types. These were approximately 10 times the levels found in bees fed with sucrose alone. Superior food conversion efficiency of the Africanized bees may be one of the reasons for their superiority both in the wild and for beekeeping in tropical and subtropical Latin America.

Unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) and micro air vehicles (MAVs) constitute unique application platforms for vibration-based energy harvesting. Generating usable electrical energy during their mission has the important practical value of providing an additional energy source to run small electronic components. Electrical energy can be harvested from aeroelastic vibrations of lifting surfaces of UAVs and MAVs as they tend to have relatively flexible wings compared to their larger counterparts. In this work, an electromechanically coupled finite element model is combined with an unsteady aerodynamic model to develop a piezoaeroelastic model for airflow excitation of cantilevered plates representing wing-like structures. The electrical power output and the displacement of the wing tip are investigated for several airflow speeds and two different electrode configurations (continuous and segmented). Cancelation of electrical output occurs for typical coupled bending-torsion aeroelastic modes of a cantilevered generator wing when continuous electrodes are used. Torsional motions of the coupled modes become relatively significant when segmented electrodes are used, improving the broadband performance and altering the flutter speed. Although the focus is placed on the electrical power that can be harvested for a given airflow speed, shunt damping effect of piezoelectric power generation is also investigated for both electrode configurations.

Resveratrol is a stilbene compound found in grapes and other sources. In this study we examined the effects of trans-resveratrol (4.38-438 mu M/implant) in the vasculogenesis of yolk-sac membranes and its capacity to improve chick embryo growth. High concentrations of the stilbene (43.8-438 mu M) significantly inhibited early vessel formation, decreasing the percentage vitelline vessels of 3.5-day embryos by 50% compared to the control. In addition, basic fibroblast growth factor-stimulated vasculogenesis (140% of vessels as compared to control) was partially reversed by t-resveratrol (35% of inhibition) and treatments with cyclooxygenase inhibitors (acetylsalicylic acid and indomethacin) as well a protein-kinase C (PKC) activator (phorbol-12,13-dibutyrate) decreased the vessel number to 60%, 50%, and 44%, respectively. Treatments with t-resveratrol (4.38-43.8 mu M/implant) significantly increased the body length of embryos incubated in vitro uncoupled from any impairment in the body shape or detectable embryotoxic effect. We suggest that the antivasculogenic activity and the enhancement in embryonic growth promoted by non acute treatments with t-resveratrol were, at least in part, due to PKC inhibition. We suggest that t-resveratrol can be usable not only as a reliable functional nutriment, but also is useful for the development of prophylactic and/or therapeutic agents for treatment of angiogenic-degenerative diseases.

Ferrites of the type M(II)Fe(2)O(4) (M = Fe and Co) have been prepared by the traditional coprecipitation method. These ferrites were modified by the adsorption of fatty acids derived from soybean and castor oil and were then dispersed in cyclohexane, providing very stable magnetic fluids, readily usable in nonpolar media. The structural properties of the ferrites and modified ferrites as well as the magnetic fluids were characterized by XRD (X-ray powder diffraction), TEM (transmission electron microscopy), DRIFTS (diffusion reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy), FTMR (Fourier transform near-infrared), UV-vis, normal Raman spectroscopy, and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). XRD and TEM analysis have shown that the magnetic nanoparticles (nonmodified and modified) present diameters in the range of 10-15 nm. DRIFTS measurements have shown that the carboxylate groups of soybean and castor oil fatty acids adsorb on the ferrite surface, forming three different structures: a bridging bidentate, a bridging monodentate, and a bidentate chelate structure. The FTIR and Raman spectra of nonmodified Fe(3)O(4) and CoFe(2)O(4) nanoparticles have shown that the number of observed phonons is not compatible with the expected O(h)(7) symmetry, since IR-only active phonons were observed. in the Raman spectra and vice versa. SERS measurements of a CoFe(2)O(4) thin film on a SERS-active gold electrode at different applied potentials made possible the assignment of the signals near 550 and 630 cm(-1) to Co-O motions and the signals near 470 and 680 cm(-1) to Fe-O motions.
