Electronic properties of a methane-water solution were investigated by a sequential quantum mechanical/molecular dynamics approach. Upon hydration methane acquires an induced dipole moment of similar to 0.5 +/- 0.2 D. This is related to polarisation effects and to weak methane-water hydrogen bond interactions. From gas phase to solution, the first vertical excitation and ionisation energies of methane are red-shifted by 0.45 +/- 0.25 and 0.87 +/- 0.40 eV, respectively. We also report results for the dynamic polarisability of methane in water. In comparison with water, no difference was found for the average monomeric dipole moment of water molecules in close interaction with methane. (c) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Four new ternary complexes of copper(I) with thiosaccharin and phosphanes were prepared. The reaction of [Cu(4)(tsac)(4)(CH(3)CN)(2)] (1) (tsac: thiosaccharinate anion) with PPh(3) in molar ratios Cu(I)/PPh(3) 1:075 and 1:2 gave the complexes [Cu(4)(tsac)(4)(PPh(3))(3)] center dot CH(3)CN (2) and Cu(tsac)(PPh(3))(2) (3), respectively. The reaction of 1 with Ph(2)PCH(2)PPh(2) (dppm) in molar ratios Cu(I)/dppm 2:1 and 1:1 gave the complexes [Cu(4) (tsac)(4)(dppm)(2)] center dot 2CH(2)Cl(2) (4) and [Cu(2)(tsac)(2)(dppm)(2)] center dot CH(2)Cl(2) (5), respectively. All the compounds have been characterized by spectroscopic and X-ray crystallographic methods. Complex 2 presents a tetra-nuclear arrangement with three metal centers in distorted tetrahedral S(2)NP environments, the fourth one with the Cu(I) ion in a distorted trigonal S(2)N coordination sphere, and the tsac anions acting as six electron donor ligands in mu(3)-S(2)N coordination forms. Complex 3 shows mononuclear molecular units with copper(I) in a distorted trigonal planar coordination sphere, built with the exocyclic S atom of a mono-coordinated thiosaccharinate anion and two P-atoms of triphenylphosphane molecules. With dppm as secondary ligand the structures of the complexes depends strongly on the stoicheometry of the preparation reaction. Complex 4 has a centrosymmetric structure. Two triply bridged Cu(2)(tsac)(2)(dppm) units are joined together by the exocyclic S-atoms of two tsac anions acting effectively as bridging tridentate ligands. Complex 5 is conformed by asymmetric dinuclear moieties where the two dppm and one tsac ligands bridge two Cu(I) atoms and the second tsac anion binds one of the metal centers through its exocyclic S-atom. Nickel catalysts with a load of 5 wt% Ni, supported on pure ZrO(2) and ZrO(2) stabilized with 4, 8 and 14 mol% CaO, were prepared by the polymerization method. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature-programmed reduction with hydrogen (TPR-H(2)), specific surface area (BET) and impedance spectroscopy (IS) and tested in the carbon dioxide reforming of methane. The XRD patterns showed the presence of the oxide precursor (NiO) and the tetragonal phase of CaO-ZrO(2) solid solutions. According to the TPR-H(2) analysis, the reduction of various NiO species was influenced by the support composition. The electrical properties of the support have a proportional effect on the catalytic activities. Catalytic tests were done at 800 degrees C for 6 h and the composition of the gaseous products and the catalytic conversion depended on the CaO-ZrO(2) solid solution composition and its influence on supported NiO species. A direct relation was found between the variation in the electrical conductivity of the support, the nickel species supported on it and the performance in the catalytic tests. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Catalysts` precursor of Co/Mg/Al promoted with Ce and La were tested in the steam reforming of methane (SRM). The addition of promoters was made by anion-exchange. The oxides characterization was made by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) analysis that confirmed Co(2+) species in free form on surface and interacted with Mg and Al in the form of solid solution. In the SRM with high fed molar ratio of H(2)O:CH(4) = 4:1, the catalysts showed a great affinity with water and immediately deactivated by oxidation of the active sites. In the stoichiometric ratio of H(2)O:CH(4) = 2: 1 the catalysts were active and presented low carbon deposition during the time reaction tested. Also a test with low fed molar ratio H(2)O:CH(4) = 0.5:1 was carried out to evaluate the stability of the catalysts by CH(4) decomposition and all the catalysts were stable during 6 h of reaction. Promoted catalysts presented lower carbon deposition. (C) 2009 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Nickel catalysts with a load of 5 wt.% Ni, supported on pure ZrO(2) and ZrO(2) stabilized with 4 mol%, 8 mol% and 12 mol% of Y(2)O(3), were prepared by the polymerization method. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature-programmed reduction with hydrogen (TPR-H(2)), specific surface area (BET) and electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and tested as catalysts for carbon dioxide reforming of methane. The XRD patterns showed the presence of the oxide precursor (NiO) and the tetragonal phase of a Y(2)O(3)-ZrO(2) solid solution. According to the TPR-H(2) analysis, the reduction of various NiO species was influenced by the composition of the support. Catalytic tests were conducted at 800 degrees C for 6 h, and the composition of the gaseous products and the catalytic conversion rate depended on the composition of the Y(2)O(3)-ZrO(2) solid solution and its influence on the supported NiO species. A direct relation was observed between the variation in the support, the nickel species supported on it and the performance in the catalytic tests. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Catalysts of Co/Mg/Al promoted with Ce and La were tested in the catalytic partial oxidation of methane (POM) reaction. The addition of promoters was made by anion-exchange. X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the formation of hydrotalcite phase for precursors. The mixed oxides were characterized as a mixture of Co3O4, periclase (Co, Al)MgO and/or spinel structure (Mg, Co)Al2O4. In the catalytic POM reaction over the promoted catalysts, a reduction in the carbon formation rate was found. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The effect of noble metal addition on the catalytic properties of Co/Al2O3 was evaluated for the steam reforming of methane. Co/Al2O3 catalysts were prepared with addition of different noble metals (Pt, Pd, Ru and Ir 0.3 wt.%) by a wetness impregnation method and characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, temperature programmed reduction (TPR) and temperature programmed oxidation (TPO) of the reduced catalysts. The UV-vis spectra of the samples indicate that, most likely, large amounts of the supported cobalt form Co species in which cobalt is in octahedral and tetrahedral symmetries. No peaks assigned to cobalt species from aluminate were found for the promoted and unpromoted cobalt catalysts. TPO analyses showed that the addition of the noble metals on the Co/Al2O3 catalyst leads to a more stable metallic state and less susceptible to the deactivation process during the reforming reaction. The Co/Al2O3 promoted with Pt showed higher stability and selectivity for H(2)production during the methane steam reforming. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Ni catalysts supported on gamma-Al(2)O(3) and Mg(Al)O were prepared with and without Rh as a promoter and tested in the reforming of methane in the presence of excess methane, simulating a model biogas. The effects of adding synthetic air on the methane conversion and the formation of carbon were assessed. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), surface area (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and XPD. The results showed that in catalysts without Rh, the Ni interacts strongly with the supports, showing high reduction temperatures in TPR tests. The addition of Rh increased the amount of reducible Ni and facilitated the reduction of the species interacting strongly with the support. In the catalytic tests, the samples promoted with Rh suffered higher carbon deposition. The in situ XPD suggested that on the support gamma-Al(2)O(3), the presence of Rh probably led to a segregation of Ni species with time on stream, leading to carbon deposition. On the support MgAlO, the presence of Rh improved the dispersion of Ni, by reducing the Ni(0) crystallite size, suggesting that in this case the carbon deposition was due to a favoring of CH(4) decomposition by Rh. NiO/Al(2)O(3) catalyst precursors were prepared by simultaneous precipitation, in a Ni:Al molar ratio of 3:1, promoted with Mo oxide (0.05, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 wt%). The solids were characterized by adsorption of N(2), XRD, TPR, Raman spectroscopy and XPS, then activated by H(2) reduction and tested for the catalytic activity in methane steam reforming. The characterization results showed the presence of NiO and Ni(2)AlO(4) in the bulk and Ni(2)AlO(4) and/or Ni(2)O(3) and MoO(4)(-2) at the surface of the samples. In the catalytic tests, high stability was observed with a reaction feed of 4:1 steam/methane. However, at a steam/methane ratio of 2: 1, only the catalyst with 0.05% Mo remained stable throughout the 500 min of the test. The addition of Mo to Ni catalysts may have a synergistic effect, probably as a result of electron transfer from the molybdenum to the nickel, increasing the electron density of the catalytic site and hence the catalytic activity.
