The catalytic activity of Ni/La(2)O(3)-Al(2)O(3) Catalysts modified with noble metals(Pt and Pd) was investigated in the steam reforming of ethanol. The catalysts were characterized by ICP, S(BFT), X-ray diffraction, temperature-programmed reduction, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and X-ray absorption fine structure (XANES). The results showed that the formation of inactive nickel aluminate was prevented by the presence of La(2)O(3) dispersed on the alumina. The promoting effect of noble metals included a marked decrease in the reduction temperatures of NiO species interacting with the support. due to the hydrogen spillover effect, facilitating greatly the reduction of the promoted catalysts. it was seen that the addition of noble metal stabilized the Ni sites in the reduced state throughout the reaction, increasing ethanol conversion and decreasing coke formation, irrespective of the nature or loading of the noble metal. We have investigated the adsorbed intermediates of ethanol electro-oxidation at Pt(1 1 1), Pt(1 0 0) and Pt(1 1 0) using FTIR and SFG spectroscopies. Mainly, we focus on the CO formation. The aim of the present work is to compare the responses coming from two different surf, cc probes: a FTIR spectroscopy and SFG spectroscopy. Between 1800cm(-1) and 2300cm(-1), our MR and SFG results are in good agreement. Specifically in the case of the ethanol/Pt(1 1 1) interface, the SFG spectroscopy presents higher sensibility to the interface response compared to the FTIR spectroscopy. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Supported nickel catalysts of composition Ni/Y(2)O(3)-ZrO(2) were synthesized in one step by the polymerization method and compared with a nickel catalyst prepared by wet impregnation. Stronger interactions were observed in the formed catalysts between NiO species and the oxygen vacancies of the Y(2)O(3)-ZrO(2) in the catalysts made by polymerization, and these were attributed to less agglomeration of the NiO during the synthesis of the catalysts in one step. The dry reforming of ethanol was catalyzed with a maximum CO(2) conversion of 61% on the 5NiYZ catalyst at 800 degrees C, representing a better response than for the catalyst of the same composition prepared by wet impregnation. Objective Underreporting of energy intake is prevalent in food surveys, but there is controversy about which dietary assessment method provides greater underreporting rates. Our objective is to compare validity of self-reported energy intake obtained by three dietary assessment methods with total energy expenditure (TEE) obtained by doubly labeled water (DLW) among Brazilian women. Design We used a cross-sectional study. Subjects/setting Sixty-five females aged 18 to 57 years (28 normal-weight, 10 over-weight, and 27 obese) were recruited from two universities to participate. Main outcome measures TEE determined by DLW, energy intake estimated by three 24-hour recalls, 3-day food record, and a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Statistical analyses performed Regression and analysis of variance with repeated measures compared TEE and energy intake values, and energy intake-to-TEE ratios and energy intake-TEE values between dietary assessment methods. Bland and Altman plots were provided for each method. chi(2) test compared proportion of underreporters between the methods. Results Mean TEE was 2,622 kcal (standard deviation [SD] =490 kcal), while mean energy intake was 2,078 kcal (SD=430 kcal) for the diet recalls; 2,044 kcal (SD=479 kcal) for the food record and 1,984 kcal (SD=832 kcal) for the FFQ (all energy intake values significantly differed from TEE; P<0.0001). Bland and Altman plots indicated great dispersion, negative mean differences between measurements, and wide limits of agreement. Obese subjects underreported more than normal-weight subjects in the diet recalls and in the food records, but not in the FFQ. Years of education, income and ethnicity were associated with reporting accuracy. Conclusions The FFQ produced greater under- and overestimation of energy intake. Underreporting of energy intake is a serious and prevalent error in dietary self-reports provided by Brazilian women, as has been described in studies conducted in developed countries.

This work models the carbon neutralization capacity of Brazil`s ethanol program since 1975. In addition to biofuel, we also assessed the mitigation potential of other energy products, such as, bioelectricity, and CO(2) emissions captured during fermentation of sugar cane`s juice. Finally, we projected the neutralization capacity of sugar cane`s bio-energy system over the next 32 years. The balance between several carbon stocks and flows was considered in the model, including the effects of land-use change. Our results show that the neutralization of the carbon released due to land-use change was attained only in 1992, and the maximum mitigation potential of the sugar cane sector was 128 tonnes Of CO(2) per ha in 2006. An ideal reconstitution of the deployment of the sugar cane sector, including the full exploitation of bio-electricity`s potential, plus the capture Of CO(2) released during fermentation, shows that the neutralization of land-use change emissions would have been achieved in 1988, and its mitigation potential would have been 390 tCO(2)/ha. Finally, forecasts of the sector up to 2039 shows that the mitigation potential in 2039 corresponds to 836 tCO(2)/ha, which corresponds to 5.51 kg Of CO(2) per liter of ethanol produced, or 55% above the negative emission level. In this work we investigate the degenerate two-photon absorption spectrum of all-trans retinal ill ethanol employing the Z-scan technique with femtosecond pulses, The two-photon absorption (2PA) spectrum presents a monotonous increase as the excitation wavelength approaches the one-photon absorption band and it peak at 790 nm. We attribute the 2PA hand to the mixing of states (1)B(u)+-like and vertical bar S(1)>, which are strongly allowed by one- and two-photon, respectively. We modeled the 2PA spectrum by using the sum-over-states approach and obtained spectroscopic parameters of the electronic transitions to vertical bar S >, vertical bar S(2)> (""(1)Bu(+)""), vertical bar S(3)>, and vertical bar S(4)> singlet-excited states. The results were compared with theoretical predictions of one- and two-photon transition calculations using the response Functions formalism within the density functional theory framework with the aid of the CAM-B3LYP functional.

In this work, the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra of pyridine (py) on thin films of Co and Ni electrodeposited on an Ag electrode activated by oxidation-reduction cycles (ORC) are presented. The SERS spectra from the thin films were compared to those of py on activated bare transition metal electrodes. It was verified that the SERS spectra of py on 3 monolayers (ML)-thick films of Ni and Co presented only bands assignable to the py adsorbed on transition metal surfaces. It was also observed that even for 50 ML-thick transition metal films, the py SERS intensity was ca. 40% of the intensity from the 3 ML-thick films. The relative intensities of the SERS bands depended on the thickness of the films, and for films thicker than 7 ML for Co and 9 ML for Ni they were very similar to those of the bare transition metal electrodes. The transition metal thin films over Ag activated electrodes presented SERS intensities 3 orders of magnitude higher than the ones from bare transition metal electrodes. These films are more suitable to study the adsorption of low Raman cross-section molecules than are ORC-activated transition metal electrodes.
