Electronic polarization of the acetone molecule in the excited n -> pi* state is considered and its influence on the solvent shift in the emission spectrum is analyzed. Using an iterative procedure the electronic polarizations of both the ground and the excited states are included and compared with previous results obtained with Car-Parrinello dynamics. Analysis of the emission transition obtained using CIS(D)/aug-cc-pVDZ on statistically uncorrelated solute-solvent structures, composed of acetone and twelve explicit water molecules embedded in the electrostatic field of remaining 263 water molecules, corroborates that the solvent effect is mild, calculated here between 80 and 380 cm (1). The highly hydrophobic fluorophore Laurdan (6-dodecanoyl-2-(dimethylaminonaphthalene)) has been widely used as a fluorescent probe to monitor lipid membranes. Actually, it monitors the structure and polarity of the bilayer surface, where its fluorescent moiety is supposed to reside. The present paper discusses the high sensitivity of Laurdan fluorescence through the decomposition of its emission spectrum into two Gaussian bands, which correspond to emissions from two different excited states, one more solvent relaxed than the other. It will be shown that the analysis of the area fraction of each band is more sensitive to bilayer structural changes than the largely used parameter called Generalized Polarization, possibly because the latter does not completely separate the fluorescence emission from the two different excited states of Laurdan. Moreover, it will be shown that this decomposition should be done with the spectrum as a function of energy, and not wavelength. Due to the presence of the two emission bands in Laurdan spectrum, fluorescence anisotropy should be measured around 480 nm, to be able to monitor the fluorescence emission from one excited state only, the solvent relaxed state. Laurdan will be used to monitor the complex structure of the anionic phospholipid DMPG (dimyristoyl phosphatidylglycerol) at different ionic strengths, and the alterations caused on gel and fluid membranes due to the interaction of cationic peptides and cholesterol. Analyzing both the emission spectrum decomposition and anisotropy it was possible to distinguish between effects on the packing and on the hydration of the lipid membrane surface. It could be clearly detected that a more potent analog of the melanotropic hormone alpha-MSH (Ac-Ser(1)-Tyr(2)-Ser(3)-Met(4)-Glu(5)-His(6)-Phe(7)-Arg(8)-Trp(9)-Gly(10)-Lys(11)-Pro(12)-Val(13)-NH(2)) was more effective in rigidifying the bilayer surface of fluid membranes than the hormone, though the hormone significantly decreases the bilayer surface hydration.

Synthetic beta-spodumene polycrystals were produced by a devitrification method, undoped and doped with controlled concentration of the Ce3+ or Mn2+ impurities. The TL properties of these polycrystals and of a colourless natural spodumene were investigated. Some dosimetric properties of them were also discussed. The dopants do not affect the TL peak position with respect a pure beta-spodumene sample but the intensity of the TL peaks at 180 and 280 degrees C is improved in the Ce-doped one. The Ce3+ ions do not participate in the TL light emission; on the other hand, the presence of Mn2+ ions cause an emission band around 600-650 nm in the TL light emission spectrum. The emission around 400 nm appears in the TL emission spectrum of all the samples and it is believed to correspond to aluminium centre ([AlO4/hole](0)) recombination with an electron. The more sensitive samples to gamma-radiation are the colourless natural spodumene and the Ce-doped synthetic spodumene, respectively. The colourless natural spodumene crystal shows a TL peak at 180 degrees C suitable for dosimetry, while for Ce-doped beta-spodumene sample the TL peaks at 180 and 280 degrees C can be used. No fading of the TL emission was observed for Ce-doped beta-spodumene sample up to 80 days after irradiation. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

CaYAl(3)O(7):Eu(3+) phosphor was prepared at furnace temperatures as low as 550A degrees C by a solution combustion method. The formation of crystalline CaYAl(3)O(7):Eu(3+) was confirmed by powder X-Ray diffraction pattern. The prepared phosphor was characterized by SEM, FT-IR and photoluminescence techniques. Photoluminescence measurements indicated that emission spectrum is dominated by the red peak located at 618 nm due to the (5)D(0)-(7)F(2) electric dipole transition of Eu(3+) ions. Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) studies were carried out to identify the centres responsible for the thermoluminescence (TL) peaks. Room temperature ESR spectrum of irradiated phosphor appears to be a superposition of two distinct centres. One of the centres (centre I) with principal g-value 2.0126 is identified as an O(-) ion while centre II with an isotropic g-factor 2.0060 is assigned to an F(+) centre (singly ionized oxygen vacancy). An additional defect centre is observed during thermal annealing experiments and this centre (assigned to F(+) centre) seems to originate from an F centre (oxygen vacancy with two electrons). The F(+) centre appears to correlate with the observed high temperature TL peak in CaYAl(3)O(7):Eu(3+) phosphor.

Diopside, a natural silicate mineral of formula CaMgSi2O6, has been investigated concerning its thermoluminescence (TL) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) properties. Glow curves and TL vs. gamma-dose were obtained irradiating natural samples to additional dose varying from 50 to 10,000Gy. Except for a 410 degrees C peak found in the Al-doped artificial diopside, all the other peaks grow linearly with radiation dose, but saturate beyond -1 kGy. To investigate high-temperature effect before irradiation, measurements of TL intensity in samples annealed at 500-900 degrees C and then irradiated to I kGy gamma-dose were carried out. Also the TL emission spectrum has been obtained. To compare with natural diopside, a synthetic pure polycrystal was produced and further those doped with iron, aluminum and manganese were also produced. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper describes the structural evolution of Y(0.9)Er(0.1)Al(3)(BO(3))(4) nanopowders using two soft chemistry routes, the sol-gel and the polymeric precursor methods. Differential scanning calorimetry, differential thermal analyses, thermogravimetric analyses, X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared, and Raman spectroscopy techniques have been used to study the chemical reactions between 700 and 1200 degrees C temperature range. From both methods the Y(0.9)Er(0.1)Al(3)(BO(3))(4) (Er:YAB) solid solution was obtained almost pure when the powdered samples were heat treated at 1150 degrees C. Based on the results, a schematic phase formation diagram of Er:YAB crystalline solid solution was proposed for powders from each method. The Er:YAB solid solution could be optimized by adding a small amount of boron oxide in excess to the Er:YAB nominal composition. The nanoparticles are obtained around 210 nm. Photoluminescence emission spectrum of the Er:YAB nanocrystalline powders was measured on the infrared region and the Stark components of the (4)I(13/2) and (4)I(15/2) levels were determined. Finally, for the first time the Raman spectrum of Y(0.9)Er(0.1)Al(3)(BO(3))(4) crystalline phase is also presented. (C) 2008 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

This paper reports on the effect of glass ceramic silica matrix on [CrO4](4-) and Cr2O3 NIR and visible luminescence. Chromium-containing silica was obtained by precipitation from water-glass and chromium nitrate acid solution with thermal treatment at 1000 degrees C. From XRD results silica and silica-chromium samples are crystalline. The chromium emission spectrum presents two main broad bands: one in the NIR region (1.1-1.7 mu m) and other in the visible region (0.6-0.7 mu m) assigned to Cr4+ and to Cr3+, respectively. This thermal treated glass ceramic silica-chromium sample stabilizes the [CrO4](4-) where Cr4+ substitutes for Si4+ and also hexacoordinated Cr3+ group probably as segregated phase in the system. It can be pointed out that luminescence spectroscopy is a powerful toot for detecting the two chromium optical centers in the glass ceramic silica. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

MgAl(2)O(4):Eu, Dy nanoparticles were prepared by citrate sol-gel method and thermally treated at 600, 700, 800 and 900 degrees C. The trivalent europium ion is partially reduced to the divalent state at 700 and 800 degrees C. Infrared spectra of the phosphors showed bands around 700 and 520 cm(-1) corresponding to the AlO(6) groups. X-ray diffraction patterns present sharp reflections of samples heated from 700 to 900 degrees C indicating the MgAl(2)O(4) spinel phase. Grain size in the range 20-30 nm were observed by measurement of transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The emission spectra of the phosphors show a broadened band at 480 nm assigned to the 4f(G)5d -> 4f(7) ((8)S(7/2)) transition of Eu(2+) ion overlapped to the (4)F(9/2) -> (6)H(15/2) transition of the Dy(3+) ion. Besides, the (4)F(9/2) -> (6)H(13/2) transition (579 nm) of Dy(3+) ion is overlapped with the (5)D(0) -> (7)F(0) (578 nm) and (5)D(0) -> (7)F(1) (595 nm) transitions from the Eu(3+) ion. Excitation spectra of the sample heated at 900 degrees C monitoring the excitation at 615 nm of (5)D(0) -> (7)F(2) transition of Eu(3+) ion exhibit a broad band assigned to the O -> Eu(3+) ligand-to-metal charge-transfer states (LMCT) around 280 nm. The samples present green persistent luminescence after exposure to UV radiation. The chromaticity coordinates were obtained from the luminescence emission spectrum. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. We have developed a spectrum synthesis method for modeling the ultraviolet (UV) emission from the accretion disk from cataclysmic variables (CVs). The disk is separated into concentric rings, with an internal structure from the Wade & Hubeny disk-atmosphere models. For each ring, a wind atmosphere is calculated in the comoving frame with a vertical velocity structure obtained from a solution of the Euler equation. Using simple assumptions, regarding rotation and the wind streamlines, these one-dimensional models are combined into a single 2.5-dimensional model for which we compute synthetic spectra. We find that the resulting line and continuum behavior as a function of the orbital inclination is consistent with the observations, and verify that the accretion rate affects the wind temperature, leading to corresponding trends in the intensity of UV lines. In general, we also find that the primary mass has a strong effect on the P Cygni absorption profiles, the synthetic emission line profiles are strongly sensitive to the wind temperature structure, and an increase in the mass-loss rate enhances the resonance line intensities. Synthetic spectra were compared with UV data for two high orbital inclination nova-like CVs-RW Tri and V347 Pup. We needed to include disk regions with arbitrary enhanced mass loss to reproduce reasonably well widths and line profiles. This fact and a lack of flux in some high ionization lines may be the signature of the presence of density-enhanced regions in the wind, or alternatively, may result from inadequacies in some of our simplifying assumptions.

YAG phosphor powders doped/codoped with Er(3+)/(Er(3+) + Yb(3+)) have been synthesised by using the solution combustion method. The effect of direct pumping into the (4)I(11/2) level under 980 nm excitation of doped/codoped Er(3+)/Yb(3+)-Er(3+) in Y(3)Al(5)O(12) (YAG) phosphor responsible for an infrared (IR) emission peaking at similar to 1.53 mu m corresponding to the (4)I(13/2)->(4)I(15/2) transition has been studied. YAG exhibits three thermally-stimulated luminescence (TSL) peaks at around 140A degrees C, 210A degrees C and 445A degrees C. Electron spin resonance (ESR) studies were carried out to identify the centres responsible for the TSL peaks. The room temperature ESR spectrum of irradiated phosphor appears to be a superposition of two distinct centres. One of the centres (centre I) with principal g-value 2.0176 is identified as O(-) ion, while centre II with an isotropic g-factor 2.0020 is assigned to an F(+) centre (singly ionised oxygen vacancy). An additional defect centre is observed during thermal-annealing experiments and this centre (assigned to F(+) centre) seems to originate from an F-centre (oxygen vacancy with two electrons) and these two centres appear to correlate with the observed high-temperature TSL peak in YAG phosphor.

Proteins have been considered important targets for reactive oxygen species. Indeed, tryptophan (W) has been shown to be a highly susceptible amino acid to many oxidizing agents, including singlet molecular oxygen [O-2 ((1)Delta(g))]. In this study, two cis- and trans-tryptophan hydroperoxide (WOOH) isomers were completely characterized by HPLC/mass spectrometry and NMR analyses as the major W-oxidation photoproducts. These photoproducts underwent thermal decay into the corresponding alcohols. Additionally, WOOHs were shown to decompose under heating or basification, leading to the formation of N-formylkynurenine (FMK). Using O-18-labeled hydroperoxides ((WOOH)-O-18-O-18), it was possible to confirm the formation of two oxygen-labeled FMK molecules derived from (WOOH)-O-18-O-18 decomposition. This result demonstrates that both oxygen atoms in FMK are derived from the hydroperoxide group. In addition, these reactions are chemiluminescent (CL), indicating a dioxetane cleavage pathway. This mechanism was confirmed since the CL spectrum of the WOOH decomposition matched the FMK fluorescence spectrum, unequivocally identifying FMK as the emitting species.
