A versatile and metal-free approach for the synthesis of molecules bearing seven- and eight-membered rings is described. The strategy is based on the ring expansion of 1-vinylcycloalkanols (or the corresponding silyl or methyl ether) mediated by the hypervalent iodine reagent HTIB (Phl(OH)OTs). The reaction condition can be easily adjusted to give seven-membered rings bearing different functional groups. A route to medium-ring lactones was also developed.

Agitation rate is an important parameter in the operation of Anaerobic Sequencing Biofilm Batch Reactors (ASBBRs), and a proper agitation rate guarantees good mixing, improves mass transfer, and enhances the solubility of the particulate organic matter. Dairy effluents have a high amount of particulate organic matter, and their anaerobic digestion presents inhibitory intermediates (e. g., long-chain fatty acids). The importance of studying agitation in such batch systems is clear. The present study aimed to evaluate how agitation frequency influences the anaerobic treatment of dairy effluents. The ASBBR was fed with wastewater from milk pasteurisation process and cheese manufacture with no whey segregation. The organic matter concentration, measured as chemical oxygen demand (COD), was maintained at approximately 8,000 mg/L. The reactor was operated with four agitation frequencies: 500 rpm, 350 rpm, 200 rpm, and no agitation. In terms of COD removal efficiency, similar results were observed for 500 rpm and 350 rpm (around 90%) and for 200 rpm and no agitation (around 80%). Increasing the system`s agitation thus not only improved the global efficiency of organic matter removal but also influenced volatile acid production and consumption and clearly modified this balance in each experimental condition.

This study presents the results of the degradation of the pesticide atrazine using electrochemical and photo-assisted electrochemical degradation techniques using SnO(2)-containing electrode of nominal composition electrodes of composition Ti/Ru(x)Sni-(x)O(2) (where X = 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25 and 0.30). The materials were characterized ex situ and in situ in order to correlate the observed atrazine removal rates with electrode morphology/composition. The results obtained demonstrate the effectiveness of the photo-assisted electrochemical degradation. Using purely electrochemical methods the rate of atrazine removal is almost zero at all the electrodes studied. However, the application of photo-assisted degradation results in almost complete atrazine removal in 1 h of electrolysis. The efficiency of atrazine degradation does not seem to be greatly affected by the electrode material or by SnO(2) content, but the overall COD removal is dependent on the SnO(2) content. Overall, the SnO(2)-containing electrodes do not reach the level of COD removal (maximum similar to 21%) seen for the Ti/Ru(0.3)Ti(0.2)O(2) electrode. An interesting correlation between the morphology factor (phi) and chemical oxygen demand removal is observed. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In the present study, photo-assisted electrochemical degradation of real textile wastewater was performed. Degradation assays were performed at constant current (40 mA cm(-2)) in a combined electro/photochemical flow-cell using a Ti/Ru(0.3)Ti(0.7)O(2) DSA(R) type electrode. The results show that the method is capable of removing color and chemical oxygen demand (COD) from the effluent. Additionally, the effect of initial pH and type of supporting electrolyte (Na(2)SO(4) or NaCl) was investigated. The principal figures of merit used in this study were COD removal and color removal (605 nm). The results show that up to 72% color and up to 59% COD removal in 120 min is possible under the operating conditions employed. Studies of the phytotoxicity of the wastewater before and after the photo-assisted degradation assays are also presented and the results demonstrate that the toxicity of the effluent is dependent on the length of electrolysis time and the treatment procedure employed.

Lead calcium titanate (Pb(1-x)Ca(x)TiO(3) or PCT) thin films have been thermally treated under different oxygen pressures, 10, 40 and 80 bar, by using the so-called chemical solution deposition method. The structural, morphological, dielectric and ferroelectric properties were characterized by x-ray diffraction, FT-infrared and Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy and polarization-electric-field hysteresis loop measurements. By annealing at a controlled pressure of around 10 and 40 bar, well-crystallized PCT thin films were successfully prepared. For the sample submitted to 80 bar, the x-ray diffraction, Fourier transformed-infrared and Raman data indicated deviation from the tetragonal symmetry. The most interesting feature in the Raman spectra is the occurrence of intense vibrational modes at frequencies of around 747 and 820 cm(-1), whose presence depends strongly on the amount of the pyrochlore phase. In addition, the Raman spectrum indicates the presence of symmetry-breaking disorder, which would be expected for an amorphous (disorder) and mixed pyrochlore-perovskite phase. During the high-pressure annealing process, the crystallinity and the grain size of the annealed film decreased. This process effectively suppressed both the dielectric and ferroelectric behaviour. Ferroelectric hysteresis loop measurements performed on these PCT films exhibited a clear decrease in the remanent polarization with increasing oxygen pressure.

Nanostrucured europium oxide and hydroxide films were obtained by pulsed Nd:YAG (532 nm) laser ablation of a europium metallic target, in the presence of a 1 mbar helium buffer atmosphere. Both the produced film and the ambient plasma were characterized. The plasma was monitored by an electrostatic probe, for plume expansion in vacuum or in the presence of the buffer atmosphere. The time evolution of the ion saturation current was obtained for several probe to substrate distances. The results show the splitting of the plume into two velocity groups, being the lower velocity profile associated with metal cluster formation within the plume. The films were obtained in the presence of helium atmosphere, for several target-to-substrate distances. They were analyzed by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, x-ray diffraction, and atomic force microscopy, for as-deposited and 600 degrees C treated-in-air samples. The results show that the as-deposited samples are amorphous and have chemical composition compatible with europium hydroxide. The thermally treated samples show x-ray diffraction peaks of Eu(2)O(3), with chemical composition showing excess oxygen. Film nanostructuring was shown to be strongly correlated with cluster formation, as shown by velocity splitting in probe current versus time plots. (C) 2010 American Vacuum Society. Recently, it has been proposed that there are two type Ia supernova progenitors: short-lived and long-lived. On the basis of this idea, we develop a theory of a unified mechanism for the formation of the bimodal radial distribution of iron and oxygen in the Galactic disc. The underlying cause for the formation of the fine structure of the radial abundance pattern is the influence of the spiral arms, specifically the combined effect of the corotation resonance and turbulent diffusion. From our modelling, we conclude that in order to explain the bimodal radial distributions simultaneously for oxygen and iron and to obtain approximately equal total iron output from different types of supernovae, the mean ejected iron mass per supernova event should be the same as quoted in the literature if the maximum mass of stars, which eject heavy elements, is 50 M(circle dot). For the upper mass limit of 70 M(circle dot), the production of iron by a type II supernova explosion should increase by about 1.5 times.

We have formed and characterized polycrystalline diamond films with surfaces having hydrogen terminations, oxygen terminations, or fluorine terminations, using a small, simple and novel plasma gun to bombard the diamond surface, formed by plasma assisted CVD in a prior step, with ions of the wanted terminating species. The potential differences between surface regions with different terminations were measured by Kelvin Force Microscopy (KFM). The highest potential occurred for oxygen termination regions and the lowest for fluorine. The potential difference between regions with oxygen terminations and hydrogen terminations was about 80 mV, and between regions with hydrogen terminations and fluorine terminations about 150 mV. Regions with different terminations were identified and imaged using the secondary electron signal provided by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). since this signal presents contrast for surfaces with different electrical properties. The wettability of the surfaces with different terminations was evaluated, measuring contact angles. The sample with oxygen termination was the most hydrophilic, with a contact angle of 75 degrees. hydrogen-terminated regions with 83 degrees, and fluorine regions 93 degrees, the most hydrophobic sample. Thin silicon nitride films were prepared at 350 degrees C by inductively coupled plasma chemical vapor deposition on Si(100) substrates under different NH(3)/SiH(4) or N(2)/SiH(4) gas mixture. The chemical composition and bonding structure of the deposited films were investigated as a function of the process parameters, such as the gas flow ratio NH(3)/SiH(4) or N(2)/SiH(4) and the RF power, using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The gas flow ratio was 1.4, 4.3, 7.2 or 9.5 and the RF power, 50 or 100 W. Decomposition results of Si 2p XPS spectra indicated the presence of bulk Si, under-stoichiometric nitride, stoichiometric nitride Si(3)N(4), oxynitride SiN(x)O(y), and stoichiometric oxide SiO(2), and the amounts of these compounds were strongly influenced by the two process parameters. These results were consistent with those obtained from N 1s XPS spectra. The chemical composition ratio N/Si in the film increased with increasing the gas flow ratio until the gas flow ratio reached 4.3, reflecting the high reactivity of nitrogen, and stayed almost constant for further increase in gas flow ratio, the excess nitrogen being rejected from the growing film. A considerable and unexpected incorporation of contaminant oxygen and carbon into the depositing film was observed and attributed to their high chemical reactivity. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. In this work the results of a spectroscopic study of the southern field narrow-line Be star HD 171054 are presented. High dispersion and signal-to-noise ratio spectra allowed the estimation of the fundamental photospheric parameters such as the projected rotational velocity, effective temperature and superficial gravity from non-LTE stellar atmosphere models. From these parameters and microturbulence, the abundances of He, C, N, O, Mg, Al and Si for this object are estimated. Results show that C is depleted whereas N is overabundant compared with the sun and OB stars in the solar vicinity. Oxygen and helium are close to the solar value. Magnesium is down by 0.43 dex and aluminium and silicon are overabundant. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The photoactivation of a photosensitizer is the initial step in photodynamic therapy (PDT) where photochemical reactions result in the production of reactive oxygen species and eventually cell death. In addition to oxidizing biomolecules, some of these photochemical reactions lead to photosensitizer degradation at a rate dependent on the oxygen concentration among other factors. We investigated photodegradation of Photogem A (R) (28 mu M), a hematoporphyrin derivative, at different oxygen concentrations (9.4 to 625.0 mu M) in aqueous solution. The degradation was monitored by fluorescence spectroscopy. The degradation rate (M/s) increases as the oxygen concentration increases when the molar ratio of oxygen to PhotogemA (R) is greater than 1. At lower oxygen concentrations (< 25 mu M) an inversion of this behavior was observed. The data do not fit a simple kinetic model of first-order dependence on oxygen concentration. This inversion of the degradation rate at low oxygen concentration has not previously been demonstrated and highlights the relationship between photosensitizer and oxygen concentrations in determining the photobleaching mechanism(s). The findings demonstrate that current models for photobleaching are insufficient to explain completely the effects at low oxygen concentration.

Photodynamic therapy, used mainly for cancer treatment and microorganisms inaction, is based on production of reactive oxygen species by light irradiation of a sensitizer. Hematoporphyrin derivatives as Photofrin (R) (PF) Photogem (R) (PG) and Photosan (R) (PF), and chlorin-c6-derivatives as Photodithazine (R)(PZ), have suitable sensitizing properties. The present study provides a way to make a fast previous evaluation of photosensitizers efficacy by a combination of techniques: a) use of brovine serum albumin and uric acid as chemical dosimeters; b) photo-hemolysis of red blood cells used as a cell membrane interaction model, and c) octanol/phosphate buffer partition to assess the relative lipophilicity of the compounds. The results suggest the photodynamic efficient rankings PZ > PG >= PF > PS. These results agree with the cytotoxicity of the photosensitizers as well as to chromatographic separation of the HpDs, both performed in our group, showing that the more lipophilic is the dye, the more acute is the damage to the RBC membrane and the oxidation of indol, which is immersed in the hydrophobic region of albumin.

High energy band gap hosts doped with lanthanide ions are suitable for optical devices applications To study the potential of Ta(2)O(5) as a host compound pure and Eu(2)O(3)-doped Ta(2)O(5) crystal fibers were grown by the laser-heated pedestal growth technique in diameters ranging from 250 to 2600 pm and in lengths of up to 50 mm The axial temperature gradient at the solid/liquid interface of pure Ta(2)O(5) fibers revealed a critical diameter of 2200 gm above which the fiber cracks X-ray diffraction measurements of the pure Ta(2)O(5) single crystals showed a monoclinic symmetry and a growth direction of [1 (1) over bar 0] An analysis of the pulling rate as a function of the fiber diameter for Eu(2)O(3)-doped Ta(2)O(5) fibers indicated a well defined region in which constitutional supercooling is absent Photoluminescence measurements of pure Ta(2)O(5) crystals using excitation above the band gap (3 8 eV) were dominated by a broad unstructured green band that peaked at 500 nm Three Eu(3+)-related optical centers were identified in the doped samples with nominal concentrations exceeding 1 mol% Two of these centers were consistent with the ion in the monoclinic phase with different oxygen coordinations The third one was visible in the presence of the triclinic phase (C) 2010 Elsevier B V All rights reserved

CaNb(2)O(6) single crystal fibers were grown by the laser-heated pedestal growth technique, directly from the starting reagents. Optically transparent fibers were obtained in the form of rods with elliptical cross-section, free from cracks, impurities, and secondary phases, with an average diameter of 0.4 mm and about 20 mm of length. The fibers grew within the orthorhombic Pbcn columbite structure, with the growth axis nearly parallel to the crystallographic a-direction. The parameters b and c were parallel to the shorter and larger ellipsis axes. A special setup using a microscope was developed to obtain the far-infrared reflectivity spectra of these micrometer-sized fibers, allowing the identification and assignment of 34 of the 38 polar phonons foreseen for the material. From these phonons, the intrinsic dielectric constant ( of 185 THz) could be estimated, showing the potential of the material for applications in microwave circuitry. These results, along with previous polarized Raman data (Cryst. Growth Des. 2010, 10, 1569), allow us to present a comprehensive set of optical phonon modes and to discuss the potential use of designed CaNb(2)O(6) microcrystals in compact optical devices.

The structure of laser glasses in the system (B(2)O(3))(0.6){(Al(2)O(3))(0.4-x)(Y(2)O(3))(x)} (0.1 <= x <= 0.25) has been investigated by means of (11)B, (27)Al, and (89)Y solid state NMR as well as Y-3d core-level X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, (11)B magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR spectra reveal that the majority of the boron atoms are three-coordinated, and a slight increase of four-coordinated boron content with increasing x can be noticed. (27)Al MAS NMR spectra show that the alumina species are present in the coordination states four, five and six. All of them are in intimate contact with both the three- and the four-coordinate boron species and vice versa, as indicated by (11)B/(27)Al rotational echo double resonance (REDOR) data. These results are consistent with the formation of a homogeneous, nonsegregated glass structure. For the first time, (89)Y solid state NMR has been used to probe the local environment of Y(3+) ions in a glass-forming system. The intrinsic sensitivity problem associated with (89)Y NMR has been overcome by combining the benefits of paramagnetic doping with those of signal accumulation via Carr-Purcell spin echo trains. Both the (89)Y chemical shifts and the Y-3d core level binding energies are found to be rather sensitive to the yttrium bonding state and reveal that the bonding properties of the yttrium atoms in these glasses are similar to those found in the model compounds YBO(3) and YAl(3)(BO(3))(4), Based on charge balance considerations as well as (11)B NMR line shape analyses, the dominant borate species are concluded to be meta- and pyroborate anions.
