The wear resistance of denture teeth is important to the longevity of removable prostheses of edentulous patients. The ability of denture teeth to maintain a stable occlusal relationship over time may be influenced by this property. The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the wear resistance of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) denture teeth based on their chemical composition when opposed by a ceramic antagonist. The maxillary canines (n=10) of 3 PMMA denture teeth (Trubyte Biotone, cross-linked PMMA; Trilux, highly cross-linked IPN (interpenetrating polymer network)-PMMA; and Vivodent, highly cross-linked PMMA) were secured in an in vitro 2-body wear-testing apparatus that produced sliding contact of the specimens (4.5 cycles/s, sliding distance of 20 mm, under 37°C running water) against glazed or airborne particle abraded ceramic. Wear resistance was measured as height loss (mm) under 300 g (sliding force) after 100,000 cycles, using a digital measuring microscope. Mean values were analyzed by 2-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (a=0.05). The wear of Trubyte Biotone (0.93 ± 0.14 mm) was significantly higher than that of both other types of teeth tested against abraded ceramic (p<0.05). The Vivodent tooth (0.64 ± 0.17 mm) exhibited the best wear resistance among the denture teeth tested against airborne particle abraded ceramic. There were no statistically significant differences (p>0.05) in wear among the 3 denture teeth evaluated against glazed ceramic. Trilux and Vivodent teeth tested against either glazed or airborne particle abraded ceramic did not differ significantly from each other (p<0.05). All teeth showed significantly more wear against airborne particle abraded ceramic than against glazed ceramic (p<0.05). In conclusion, the three types of PMMA denture teeth presented significantly different wear resistance against the abraded ceramic. The high-strength PMMA denture teeth were more wear-resistant than the conventional PMMA denture tooth.

One of the most important properties of artificial teeth is the abrasion wear resistance, which is determinant in the maintenance of the rehabilitation's occlusal pattern. OBJECTIVES: This in vitro study aims to evaluate the abrasion wear resistance of 7 brands of artificial teeth opposed to two types of antagonists. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seven groups were prepared with 12 specimens each (BIOLUX & BL, TRILUX & TR, BLUE DENT & BD, BIOCLER & BC, POSTARIS & PO, ORTHOSIT & OR, GNATHOSTAR & GN), opposed to metallic (M & nickel-chromium alloy), and to composite antagonists (C & Solidex indirect composite). A mechanical loading device was used (240 cycles/min, 4 Hz speed, 10 mm antagonist course). Initial and final contours of each specimen were registered with aid of a profile projector (20x magnification). The linear difference between the two profiles was measured and the registered values were subjected to ANOVA and Tukey's test. RESULTS: Regarding the antagonists, only OR (M = 10.45 ± 1.42 µm and C = 2.77 ± 0.69 µm) and BC (M = 6.70 ± 1.37 µm and C = 4.48 ± 0.80 µm) presented statistically significant differences (p < 0.05). Best results were obtained with PO (C = 2.33 ± 0.91 µm and M = 1.78 ± 0.42 µm), followed by BL (C = 3.70 ± 1.32 µm and M = 3.70 ± 0.61 µm), statistically similar for both antagonists (p>0.05). Greater result variance was obtained with OR, which presented the worse results opposed to Ni-Cr (10.45 ± 1.42 µm), and results similar to the best ones against composite (2.77 ± 0.69 µm). CONCLUSIONS: Within the limitations of this study, it may be concluded that the antagonist material is a factor of major importance to be considered in the choice of the artificial teeth to be used in the prosthesis.

Dental erosion is a type of wear caused by non bacterial acids or chelation. There is evidence of a significant increase in the prevalence of dental wear in the deciduous and permanent teeth as a consequence of the frequent intake of acidic foods and drinks, or due to gastric acid which may reach the oral cavity following reflux or vomiting episodes. The presence of acids is a prerequisite for dental erosion, but the erosive wear is complex and depends on the interaction of biological, chemical and behavioral factors. Even though erosion may be defined or described as an isolated process, in clinical situations other wear phenomena are expected to occur concomitantly, such as abrasive wear (which occurs, e.g, due to tooth brushing or mastication). In order to control dental loss due to erosive wear it is crucial to take into account its multifactorial nature, which predisposes some individuals to the condition.

Tool wear is a very important subject affecting the economics of machining, especially in tapping, since it is one of the last operations to be performed within most operation sequences. In the present study, some aspects of tapping such as the mechanisms and types of wear were investigated in taps working at conventional and high-speed cutting (HSC). Additionally, different types of coatings and cooling /lubrication conditions were used. The tapping operation (M8 x 1.25) was performed in through holes with two cutting speeds (30 and 60 m/min) in grey cast iron GG25. Lubrication conditions tested were dry and with minimal quantity of lubricant. Tap materials were manufactured by powder metallurgy and coated with (TiAl)N and with TiCN. A go-non-go gauge criterion was used to assess tool life. The wear and surface aspects of the tools and workpiece were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy and energy dissipation spectroscopy. Torque signals were also measured during the tests. The main wear mechanism observed was adhesion, although some abrasion and diffusion may also have occurred, and the main type of wear was flank wear. The adhesion of workpiece material on the tool was the main and decisive factor ending tool life. Tool coatings proved to be an efficient way to minimize adhesion. Torque signals followed the same pattern as the flank wear and no significant change was observed when the cutting speed was increased.

Three welding procedures used to rebuild worn shafts in sugar cane mills were analysed: two submerged arc welding processes and one flux cored arc welding (FCAW) process. Sliding wear tests were in accordance with ASTM G 77 standard, using rings of welding material, blocks of bronze SAE 67, and oil as lubricant. The worn surfaces of rings and blocks were analysed by scanning electron microscopy to determine the wear mechanisms. High contact pressure, high operating temperature, and low relative speed were applied in sliding wear tests to match the conditions in sugar cane mills. Transferred material and evidence of adhesive junctions were detected. Additionally, hardened fragments produced abrasive grooves on the worn surfaces. The welding deposits that presented strong adhesion on the worn surface showed higher mass loss than the materials that presented more abrasive characteristics. Plastic mechanical properties were measured and related to the mass loss. The tested materials presented similar hardness but different yield stress and hardening coefficient. A relationship between wear, strain hardening coefficient, and yield stress was found. The welding deposit that presented the highest hardening coefficient showed the highest mass loss, with evidence of severe adhesion on the worn surface.

Nontwist systems, common in the dynamical descriptions of fluids and plasmas, possess a shearless curve with a concomitant transport barrier that eliminates or reduces chaotic transport, even after its breakdown. In order to investigate the transport properties of nontwist systems, we analyze the barrier escape time and barrier transmissivity for the standard nontwist map, a paradigm of such systems. We interpret the sensitive dependence of these quantities upon map parameters by investigating chaotic orbit stickiness and the associated role played by the dominant crossing of stable and unstable manifolds. In the present work, intermetallic alloys Fe-Si and Fe-Al (Fe(3)Si-C-Cr and Fe(3)Al-C), produced by induction melting, were evaluated regarding their oxidation and abrasive resistance. The tests performed were quasi-isothermal oxidation, cyclic oxidation, and dry sand/rubber wheel abrasion. As reference, the ASTM A297-HH grade stainless steel was tested in the same conditions. In the oxidation tests, the Fe-Al based alloy presented the lowest oxidation rate, and the Fe-Si based alloy achieved the best results in the abrasion test, showing better performance than the HH type stainless steel.

Multilayer CVD coatings for high speed cutting applications were designed to achieve high wear and heat resistance during machining of steel alloys. In this work the microstructure and cutting performance of these novel multilayer CVD coatings are investigated and compared with standard CVD multilayer coatings. 3D-FIB tomography is used to characterize the microstructure of the layers, especially the transition between the Ti(C,N) and the Al(2)O(3) layer. The 3D reconstruction of the surface of the Ti(C,N) layer shows the formation of protruded Ti(C,N) grains with a very particular architecture, which penetrate into the Al(2)O(3) top-layer, providing a mechanical anchoring between both layers. Cemented carbides coated with the novel CVD multilayer present reduced crater and flank wear as well as improved adherence between the Al(2)O(3) top-layer and the Ti(C,N) layer leading to a dramatic improvement of cutting performance.

The high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) thermal spray process produces highly wear and/or corrosion resistant coatings. Tungsten carbide with a metallic binder is often used for this purpose. In this work, tungsten carbide coatings containing cobalt or nickel binder were produced by HVOF and characterised by optical and electron microscopy, hardness and a dry sand/rubber wheel abrasion test. The HVOF process produced dense coatings with low porosity levels and high hardness. The wear resistance of the specimens, which were surface treated, increased as the roughness percentage decreased. Tungsten carbide nickel based coating yielded the best wear resistance in the as sprayed condition. However, the wear rate and wear of the two coatings converged to the same values as the number of revolutions increased. Wear behaviour in the ground condition was similar, although the tungsten carbide cobalt based coating yielded better performance with increasing distance travelled during the wear test.

The superiority of superaustenitic stainless steel (SASS) lies in its good weldability and great resistance to stress corrosion and pitting, because of its higher chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen contents, when compared to general stainless steels. However, some of its applications are limited by very poor wear behavior. Plasma-nitriding is a very effective treatment for producing wear resistant and hard surface layers on stainless steels without compromising the corrosion resistance. In this work, UNS S31254 SASS samples were plasma-nitrided at three different temperatures (400, 450, and 500 degrees C), under a pressure of 500 Pa, for 5 h, in order to verify the influence of the temperature on the morphology, wear, and corrosion behavior of the modified surface layers. The plasma-nitrided samples were analyzed by means of optical microscopy, micro-hardness. X-ray diffraction, wear, and corrosion tests. Wear tests were conducted in a fixed ball micro-wear machine and corrosion behavior was carried out in natural sea water by means of potentiodynamic polarization curves. For the sample which was plasma-nitrided at 400 degrees C, only the expanded austenite phase was observed, and for the treatments performed at 450 and 500 degrees C, chromium nitrides (CrN and Cr(2)N) were formed in addition to the expanded austenite. Wear volume and Knoop surface hardness increased as the plasma-nitriding temperature increased. Higher wear rates were observed at high temperatures, probably due to the increment on layer fragility. The sample modified at 400 degrees C exhibited the best corrosion behavior among all the plasma-nitriding conditions. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Alloys of Al-Sn and Al-Si are widely used in tribological applications such as cylinder liners and journal bearings. Studies of the influence of the as-cast microstructures of these alloys on the final mechanical properties and wear resistance can be very useful for planning solidification conditions in order to permit a desired level of final properties to be achieved. The aim of the present study was to contribute to a better understanding about the relationship between the scale of the dendritic network and the corresponding mechanical properties and wear behavior. The Al-Sn (15 and 20 wt pct Sn) and Al-Si (3 and 5 wt pct Si) alloys were directionally solidified under unsteady-state heat flow conditions in water-cooled molds in order to permit samples with a wide range of dendritic spacings to be obtained. These samples were subjected to tensile and wear tests, and experimental quantitative expressions correlating the ultimate tensile strength (UTS), yield tensile strength, elongation, and wear volume to the primary dendritic arm spacing (DAS) have been determined. The wear resistance was shown to be significantly affected by the scale of primary dendrite arm spacing. For Al-Si alloys, the refinement of the dendritic array improved the wear resistance, while for the Al-Sn alloys, an opposite effect was observed, i.e., the increase in primary dendrite arm spacing improved the wear resistance. The effect of inverse segregation, which is observed for Al-Sn alloys, on the wear resistance is also discussed.

AISI H13 tool steel discs were pulsed plasma minded during different times at a constant temperature of 400 degrees C Wear tests were performed in order to study the acting wear mechanisms The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and hardness measurements The results showed that longer nitriding times reduce the wear volumes. The friction coefficient was 0.20 +/- 0 05 for all tested conditions and depends strongly on the presence of debris After wear tests, the wear tracks were characterized by optical and scanning electron microscopy and the wear mechanisms were observed to change from low cycle fatigue or plastic shakedown to long cycle fatigue These mechanisms were correlated to the microstructure and hardness of the nitrided layer (C) 2010 Elsevier B V All rights reserved

In this paper, a review of the thermodynamic approaches of sliding wear is presented. These approaches are divided into the friction energy dissipation, the energy balance and the entropy production. A concise and critic account of the approaches is discussed, remarking their relative strength and weakness in explaining the phenomena occurring in the sliding wear.

The effects of different tempering temperatures (300-600 degrees C) on abrasive wear resistance of mottled cast iron were studied. Abrasive wear tests were carried out using the rubber-wheel test on quartz sand and the pin test on Al(2)O(3) abrasive cloths. The retained austenite content of the matrix was determined by X-ray diffraction. The wear surface of the specimens was examined by scanning electron microscopy for identifying the wear micromechanism. Bulk hardness and matrix hardness before and after the tests were measured. The results showed that in the two-body (pin-on-disc test) system, the main wear mechanism was microcutting and high matrix hardening was presented. The wear rates presented higher correlation with the retained austenite than with the bulk and matrix hardness. In the three-body system (sand-rubber wheel), the wear surfaces presented indentations due to abrasive rolling. The wear rates had better correlation with both the bulk and matrix hardness (before and after the wear test) than with the retained austenite content. There are two groups of results, high and low wear rates corresponding to each tribosystem, two-body abrasive wear and three-body abrasive wear, respectively. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. The abrasive wear resistance of white cast iron was studied. The iron was solidified using two solidification rates of 1.5 and 15 degrees C/s. Mass loss was evaluated with tests of the type pin on abrasive disc using alumina of different sizes. Two matrices were tested: one predominantly austenitic and the other predominantly martensitic, containing M(3)C carbides. Samples with cooling rate of 15 degrees C/s showed higher hardness and more refined microstructure compared with those solidified at 1.5 degrees C/s. During the test, the movement of successive abrasives gave rise to the strain hardening of the austenite phase, leading to the attainment of similar levels of surface hardness, which explains why the wear rate showed no difference compared to the austenite samples with different solidification rates. For the austenitic matrix the wear rate seems to depend on the hardness of the worn surface and not on the hardness of the material without deformation. The austenitic samples showed cracking and fracture of M(3)C carbides. For the predominantly martensitic matrix, the wear rate was higher at the solidification rate of 1.5 degrees C/s, for grain size of 66 and 93 mu m. Higher abrasive sizes were found to produce greater penetration and strain hardening of austenitic matrices. However, martensitic iron produces more microcutting, increasing the wear rate of the material. The analysis of the worn surface by scanning electron microscopy indicated abrasive wear mechanisms such as: microcutting, microfatigue and microploughing.
