In this paper, we address the problem of scheduling jobs in a no-wait flowshop with the objective of minimising the total completion time. This problem is well-known for being nondeterministic polynomial-time hard, and therefore, most contributions to the topic focus on developing algorithms able to obtain good approximate solutions for the problem in a short CPU time. More specifically, there are various constructive heuristics available for the problem [such as the ones by Rajendran and Chaudhuri (Nav Res Logist 37: 695-705, 1990); Bertolissi (J Mater Process Technol 107: 459-465, 2000), Aldowaisan and Allahverdi (Omega 32: 345-352, 2004) and the Chins heuristic by Fink and Voa (Eur J Operat Res 151: 400-414, 2003)], as well as a successful local search procedure (Pilot-1-Chins). We propose a new constructive heuristic based on an analogy with the two-machine problem in order to select the candidate to be appended in the partial schedule. The myopic behaviour of the heuristic is tempered by exploring the neighbourhood of the so-obtained partial schedules. The computational results indicate that the proposed heuristic outperforms existing ones in terms of quality of the solution obtained and equals the performance of the time-consuming Pilot-1-Chins.

The clingfish Gobiesox barbatulus shows nocturnal feeding activity, spending most part of the day stationary and adhered to the inferior part of stones. To feed, this species uses the sit-and-wait and particulate feeding tactics. It shows a carnivorous feeding habit mostly consuming small benthic crustaceans. It can move in two ways: (1) "stone-by-stone", sliding its ventral sucker disc across each stone and (2) "surf", when it takes advantage of the energy of the ebbing tide to quickly cross a distance up to four times its body length. Its reproductive season occurs between the end of spring and the beginning of summer, during which time it lays about 2,000 adhesive eggs of 1 mm each in a single layer under stones. It has more than one egg-laying session per reproductive season, therefore showing several different developmental stages. It performs fanning, mouthing and guarding of the eggs as forms of parental care. Data shown here also indicates that G. barbatulus has some shelter fidelity, being probably territorial.

Bee males (drones) of stingless bees tend to congregate near entrances of conspecific nests, where they wait for virgin queens that initiate their nuptial flight. We observed that the Neotropical solitary wasp Trachypus boharti (Hymenoptera, Cabronidae) specifically preys on males of the stingless bee Scaptotrigona postica (Hymenoptera, Apidae); these wasps captured up to 50 males per day near the entrance of a single hive. Over 90% of the wasp attacks were unsuccessful; such erroneous attacks often involved conspecific wasps and worker bees. After the capture of non-male prey, wasps almost immediately released these individuals unharmed and continued hunting. A simple behavioral experiment showed that at short distances wasps were not specifically attracted to S. postica males nor were they repelled by workers of the same species. Likely, short-range prey detection near the bees' nest is achieved mainly by vision whereas close-range prey recognition is based principally on chemical and/or mechanical cues. We argue that the dependence on the wasp's visual perception during attack and the crowded and dynamic hunting conditions caused wasps to make many preying attempts that failed. Two wasp-density-related factors, wasp-prey distance and wasp-wasp encounters, may account for the fact that the highest male capture and unsuccessful wasp bee encounter rates occurred at intermediate wasp numbers.

A variety of factors influence prey selection by predators. Because Barn Owls (Tyto alba) and Burrowing Owls (Athene cunicularia) differ in size and foraging tactics, we expected differential predation on small mammal prey. We hypothesized that the Barn Owl, all active predator, would prey on smaller and younger individuals than the Burrowing Owl, a sit-and-wait predator. We used pellet analyses to evaluate selection of small mammals by the two owls in relation to prey), species, age, and size at the Ecological Station of Itirapina, state of Sao Paulo, in southeastern Brazil. Small mammals constituted most of the prey individuals and biomass in the diet of Barn Owls. Although Burrowing Owls consumed a wider range of taxa, small mammals represented one-third of all biomass consumed. With respect. to small mammals, Barn Owls foraged selectively relative to prey species, size, and age. Burrowing Owls foraged opportunistically relative to prey species, but selectively relative to prey size and age. Barn Owls selected smaller and younger (juvenile and subadult) individuals of the delicate vesper mouse (Calomys tener) and Burrowing Owls preyed more oil larger and older (subadult only) individuals. morphology and behavior of both prey and predators may explain this differential predation. Our data suggest that the active predator feeds oil smaller and younger prey, and the sit-and-wait predator took relatively larger and older prey.

Cryopreservation of parathyroid tissue is used in the surgical treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism. After surgical resection, the tissue is temporarily maintained in a cell culture solution until it arrives at the specialized laboratory where the cryopreservation process will take place. The present study evaluates the time that the human hyperplastic parathyroid gland tissue can wait before cryopreservation, based on parathyroid cell ultrastructural integrity. This prospective study included 11 patients who underwent total parathyroidectomy with heterotopic autotransplantation and cryopreservation of parathyroid tissue fragments. Part of the tissue was kept in cell culture solution at 4A degrees C. Five time periods between 2 and 24 h were defined, and parathyroid fragments were kept in the solution for that length of time. At the end of each period, the fragments were removed from the transport solution, fixed, and prepared for ultrathin sections. Of the 11 cases studied, 10 showed ultrastructural findings consistent with cellular viability in tissue fragments that remained in the transport solution up to 12 h. Electron microscopy revealed that cell adhesion and the integrity of plasma membranes, nuclei, and mitochondria were preserved in one case for up to 24 h. Changes in mitochondrial structure represented the most constant ultrastructural damage seen in the cases studied, in addition to the presence of edema and cell vacuoles. Analysis of the ultrastructure of hyperplastic parathyroid gland tissue showed that ultrastructural integrity was in most cases properly maintained in fragments stored up to 12 h in a cell culture solution at 4A degrees C.

P>Esophagocoloplasty and gastric transposition are two major methods for esophageal substitution in children with esophageal atresia, and there is broad agreement that these operations should not be performed before the children start walking. However, there are some reported advantages of performing such operations in the first months of life or in the neonatal period. In this study, we compared our experience with esophageal substitution procedures performed in walking children with esophageal atresia, with the outcomes of children who had the operation before the third month of life reported in the literature. The purpose of this study was to establish if we have to wait until the children start walking before indicating the esophageal replacement procedure. From February 1978 to October 2009, 129 children with esophageal atresia underwent esophageal replacement in our hospital (99 colonic interpositions and 30 gastric transpositions). The records of these patients were reviewed for data regarding demographics, complications (leaks, graft failures, strictures, and graft torsion), and mortality and compared with those reported in the two main articles on esophageal replacement in the neonatal period or in patients less than 3 months of age. The main complication of our casuistic was cervical anastomosis leakage, which sealed spontaneously in all except in four patients. One patient of the esophagocoloplasty group developed graft necrosis and three patients in the gastric transposition group had gastric outlet obstruction, secondary to axial torsion of the stomach placed in the retrosternal space. The long-term outcome of the patients in both groups was considered good to excellent in terms of normal weight gain, absence of dysphagia, and other gastrointestinal symptoms. The comparisons of the main complications and mortality rates in walking children with esophageal substitutions performed in the first months of life showed that the incidences of cervical anastomotic leaks and graft failures were similar, but mortality rate in the first few months of life was significantly greater than that observed in our group of patients (P = 0.001). Based on the comparison of our results with those of published series, we conclude that the recommendation of performing esophagocoloplasty or total gastric transposition in children with esophageal atresia after they start walking is still valid.

Objectives: To evaluate clinical and echocardiographic variables that could be used to predict outcomes in patients with asymptomatic severe aortic valve stenosis. Management of asymptomatic severe aortic stenosis is controversial. Because prophylactic surgery may be protective, independent predictors of events that could justify early surgery have been sought. Methods: Outpatients (n= 133; mean [+/- SD] age, 66.2 +/- 13.6 years) with isolated severe asymptomatic aortic stenosis but normal left ventricular function and no previous myocardial infarction were followed up prospectively at a tertiary care hospital. Interventions: We use a ""wait-for-events"" strategy. Clinical and echocardiographic variables were analyzed. Results: Nineteen patients developed angina; 40, dyspnea; 5, syncope; and 7, sudden death during a mean follow-up period of 3.30 +/- 1.87 years. Event-free survival was 90.2 +/- 2.6% at 1 year, 73.4 +/-.9% at 2 years, 70.7 +/- 4.3% at 3 years, 57.8 +/- 4.7% at 4 years, 40.3 +/- 5.0% at 5 years, and 33.3 +/- 5.2% at 6 years. The mean follow-up period until sudden death (1.32 +/- 1.11 years) was shorter than that for dyspnea (2.44 +/- 1.84 years), syncope (2.87 +/- 1.26 years) and angina (3.03 +/- 1.68 years). Cox regression analysis disclosed only reduced but within normal limits ejection fraction as independent predictor of total events. Conclusions: Management on ""wait-for-events"" strategy is generally safe. Progressive left ventricular ejection fraction reduction even within normal limits identified patients at high risk for events in whom valve replacement surgery should be considered. Management of rectal cancer has become increasingly complex and a multidisciplinary approach is considered of key importance for improving outcomes. A national survey among specialists involved in this multidisciplinary setting was performed. A web-based survey containing 11 questions regarding rectal cancer management was sent to surgeons and medical oncologists registered by their corresponding societies as members. Statistical analysis was performed using the chi-square and Fisher`s exact tests for all categorical variables according to response to individual questions. Multivariate analysis was performed using Cox`s logistic regression. Overall, 418 email recipients responded the survey. Local staging was performed without either magnetic resonance imaging or endorectal ultrasound by 64% of responders. Seventy-two percent considered that final management decision should be made after neoadjuvant chemoradiation therapy. Additionally, 46% considered that an alternative procedure (local excision or observation) was appropriate in a patient with a complete clinical response. Colorectal surgeons were more frequently in favor of longer intervals after completion of chemoradiation therapy (P = 0.001) and of alternative management procedures after a complete clinical response (P = 0.02). After multivariate analysis, the choice of a watch and wait approach after a complete clinical response following neoadjuvant chemoradiation therapy was significantly more frequent among surgeons (OR 3.5, 95% CI 1.8-7.1). Surgeons seem to be more in favor of tailoring management of rectal cancer according to tumor response after neoadjuvant chemoradiation therapy, with longer intervals after chemoradiation therapy, decisions about treatment strategy being made after chemoradiation therapy instead of before, and the use of alternative surgical procedures after a complete clinical response following neoadjuvant therapy.

This paper addresses the one-dimensional cutting stock problem when demand is a random variable. The problem is formulated as a two-stage stochastic nonlinear program with recourse. The first stage decision variables are the number of objects to be cut according to a cutting pattern. The second stage decision variables are the number of holding or backordering items due to the decisions made in the first stage. The problem`s objective is to minimize the total expected cost incurred in both stages, due to waste and holding or backordering penalties. A Simplex-based method with column generation is proposed for solving a linear relaxation of the resulting optimization problem. The proposed method is evaluated by using two well-known measures of uncertainty effects in stochastic programming: the value of stochastic solution-VSS-and the expected value of perfect information-EVPI. The optimal two-stage solution is shown to be more effective than the alternative wait-and-see and expected value approaches, even under small variations in the parameters of the problem.
