We report results on the electronic, vibrational, and optical properties of SnO(2) obtained using first-principles calculations performed within the density functional theory. All the calculated phonon frequencies, real and imaginary parts of complex dielectric function, the energy-loss spectrum, the refractive index, the extinction, and the absorption coefficients show good agreement with experimental results. Based on our calculations, the SnO(2) electron and hole effective masses were found to be strongly anisotropic. The lattice contribution to the low-frequency region of the SnO(2) dielectric function arising from optical phonons was also determined resulting the values of E > (1aSyen) (latt) (0) = 14.6 and E > (1ayen) (latt) (0) = 10.7 for directions perpendicular and parallel to the tetragonal c-axis, respectively. This is in excellent agreement with the available experimental data. After adding the electronic contribution to the lattice contribution, a total average value of E >(1)(0) = 18.2 is predicted for the static permittivity constant of SnO(2).

This work presents the electro-optical characterization of metal-organic interfaces prepared by the Ion Beam Assisted Deposition (IBAD) method. IBAD applied in this work combines simultaneously metallic film deposition and bombardment with an independently controlled ion beam, allowing different penetration of the ions and the evaporated metallic elements into the polymer. The result is a hybrid, non-abrupt interface, where polymer, metal and ion coexists. We used an organic light emitting diode, which has a typical vertical-architecture, for the interface characterization: Glass/Indium Tin Oxide (ITO)/Poly[ethylene-dioxythiophene/poly{styrenesulfonicacid}]) (PEDOT:PSS) /Emitting Polymer/Metal. The emitting polymer layer comprised of the Poly[(9,9-dioctyl-2,7-divinylenefluorenylene)-alt-co-{2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene}] (PFO) and the metal layer of aluminum prepared with different Ar(+) ion energies varying in the range from 0 to 1000 eV. Photoluminescence, Current-Voltage and Electroluminescence measurements were used to study the emission and electron injection properties. Changes of these properties were related with the damage caused by the energetic ions and the metal penetration into the polymer. Computer simulations of hybrid interface damage and metal penetration were confronted with experimental data. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Electroactive nanostructured membranes have been produced by the layer-by-layer (LbL) technique, and used to make electrochemical enzyme biosensors for glucose by modification with cobalt hexacyanoferrate redox mediator and immobilisation of glucose oxidase enzyme. Indium tin oxide (ITO) glass electrodes were modified with up to three bilayers of polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers containing gold nanoparticles and poly(vinylsulfonate) (PVS). The gold nanoparticles were covered with cobalt hexacyanoferrate that functioned as a redox mediator, allowing the modified electrode to be used to detect H(2)O(2), the product of the oxidase enzymatic reaction, at 0.0 V vs. SCE. Enzyme was then immobilised by cross-linking with glutaraldehyde. Several parameters for optimisation of the glucose biosensor were investigated, including the number of deposited bilayers, the enzyme immobilisation protocol and the concentrations of immobilised enzyme and of the protein that was crosslinked with PAMAM. The latter was used to provide glucose oxidase with a friendly environment, in order to preserve its bioactivity. The optimised biosensor, with three bilayers, has high sensitivity and operational stability, with a detection limit of 6.1 mu M and an apparent Michaelis-Menten constant of 0.20 mM. It showed good selectivity against interferents and is suitable for glucose measurements in natural samples. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Phytase (myo-inositol hexaphosphate phosphohydrolase) and phytic acid (myo-inositol hexaphosphate) play an important environmental role, in addition to being a health issue in food industry. Phytic acid is antinutritional due to its ability to chelate metal ions and may also react with proteins decreasing their bioavailability. In this work, we produced biosensors with phytase immobilized in Layer-by-Layer (LbL) films, which could detect phytic acid with a detection limit of 0.19 mmol L-1, which is sufficient to detect phytic acid in seeds of grains and vegetables. The biosensosrs consisted of LbL films containing up to eight bilayers of phytase alternated with poly(allylamine) hydrochloride (PAH) deposited onto an indium-tin oxide (ITO) substrate modified with Prussian Blue. Amperometric detection was conducted in an acetate buffer solution (at pH 5.5) at room temperature, with the biosensor response attributed to the formation of phosphate ions. In subsidiary experiments with the currents measured at 0.0 V (vs. SCE), we demonstrated the absence of effects from some interferents, pointing to a good selectivity of the biosensor. The immobilization of enzymes in organized two-dimensional matrices is a key requirement for many biotechnological applications. In this paper, we used the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique to obtain controlled architectures of urease immobilized in solid supports, whose physicochemical properties were investigated in detail. Urease molecules were adsorbed at the air-water interface and incorporated into Langmuir monolayers of the phospholipid dipalmitoyl phosphatidyl glycerol (DPPG). Incorporation of urease made DPPG monolayers more flexible and caused the reduction of the equilibrium and dynamic elasticity of the film. Urease and DPPG-urease mixed monolayers could be transferred onto solid substrates, forming LB films. A close packing arrangement of urease was obtained, especially in the mixed LB films, which was inferred with nanogravimetry and electrochemistry measurements. From the blocking effect of the LB films deposited onto indium tin oxide (ITO) substrates, the electrochemical properties of the LB films pointed to a charge transport controlled by the lipid architecture. Layer-by-layer (LBL) films of nickel tetrasulfonated phthalocyanine (NiTsPc) alternated with poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) have been prepared, whose surface charge has been evaluated using surface potential measurements. From adsorption kinetics results, we obtained the immersion time of similar to 40 s, which was used to assemble layers of NiTsPc. The effect of gold (Au) and aluminum (Al) electrodes on the charge behavior was examined. We found that the surface potential (i.e. surface charge) was inverted each time a layer of PAH was alternated with another of NiTsPc molecules for the two types of electrodes, which was attributed to charge overcompensation between positive charges of PAH molecules, and negative charges from NiTsPc molecules. We describe the assembly of layer-by-layer films based on the poly(propylene imine) dendrimer (PPID) generation 3 and nickel tetrasulfonated phthalocyanine (NiTsPc) for application as chemically sensitive membranes in sepal alive extended-gate field effect transistor (SEGFET) pH sensors PPID/NiTsPc films wet e adsorbed on quartz, glass. indium tin oxide. or gold (Au)-covered glass substrates Multilayer formation was monitored via UV-vis absorption upon following the increment in the Q-band intensity (615 nm) of NiTsPc The nanostructured membranes were very stable in a pH range of 4-10 and displayed a good sensitivity toward H(+), ca 30 mV/pH for PPID/N(1)TsPc films deposited on Au-covered substrates For films deposited on ITO, the sensitivity was ca 52 4 mV/pH. close to the expected theoretical value for ton-sensitive membranes. The use of chemically stable PPID/NiTsPc films as gate membranes in SEGFETs, as introduced here, may represent an alternative for the fabrication of nanostructured, porous platforms for enzyme immobilization to be used in enzymatic biosensors.

In this work we studied the properties of absorption and emission line shape of layer-by-layer (LBL) poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) on indium-tin oxide (ITO) electrode. To minimize the PPV thermal conversion effects during the polymer processing, we used a less aggressive leaving group in the precursor polymer; minimizing electrode degradation. LBL ITO/PPV films showed the same absorption and emission line shape compared with LBL PPV films deposited on non-metallic substrates (glass). With this analysis we indirectly observe the decrease in the ITO degradation. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) technique was used to analyze quantitatively the microscopic morphology of the film surface. Results indicated that the substrate topology is not affected, to a large extent, by the use of dodecylbenzensulfonate (DBS) ion. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The present work describes the synthesis of platinum nanoparticles followed by their electrophoretic deposition onto transparent fluorine-doped tin oxide electrodes. The nano-Pt-modified electrodes were characterized by voltammetric studies in acidic solutions showing a great electrocatalytic behavior towards H(+) reduction being very interesting for fuel cell applications. Morphological characterization was performed by atomic force microscopy on different modified electrodes showing a very rough surface which can be tuned by means of time of deposition. Also, nickel hydroxide thin films were galvanostatically grown onto these electrodes showing an interesting electrochemical behavior as sharper peaks, indicating a faster ionic exchange from the electrolyte to the film.

Layer-by-layer (LbL) films from K(2)Nb(6)O(17)(2-) and polyallylamine (PAH) and dip-coating films of H(2)K(2)Nb(6)O(17) were prepared on a fluorine-doped tin-oxide (FTO)-coated glass. The atomic force microscopy (AFM) images were carried out for morphological characterization of both materials. The real surface area and the roughness factor were determined on the basis of pseudocapacitive processes involved in the electroreduction/electrooxidation of gold layers deposited on these films. Next, lithium ion insertion into these materials was examined by means of electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical measurements. More specifically, cyclic voltammetry and current pulses under visible light beams were used to investigate mass transport and chromogenic properties. The lithium ion diffusion coefficient (D(Li)) within the LbL matrix is significantly higher than that within the dip-coating film, ensuring high storage capacity of lithium ions in the self-assembled electrode. Contrary to the LbL film, the potentiodynamic profile of absorbance change (Delta A) as a function of time is not similar to that obtained in the case of current density for the dip-coating film. Aiming at analyzing the rate of the coloration front associated with lithium ion diffusion, a spectroelectrochemical method based on the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) was employed so as to determine the ""optical"" diffusion coefficient (D(op)). In the dip-coating film, the method employed here revealed that the lithium ion rate is higher in diffusion pathways formed from K(2)Nb(6)O(17)(2-) sites that contribute more significantly to Delta A. Meanwhile, the presence of PAH contributed to the increased ionic mobility in diffusion pathways in the LbL film, with low contribution to the electrochromic efficiency. These results aided a better understanding of the potentiodynamic profile of the temporal change of absorbance and current density during the insertion/deinsertion of lithium ions into the electrochromic materials.

In this paper the synthesis, photo luminescence and electroluminescence investigation of the novel tetrakis beta-diketonate of rare-earth complexes such as M[Eu(dbM)(4)] and M[Tb(acac)(4)] with a variety of cationic ligands, M=Li(+), Na(+) and K(+) have been investigated. The emission spectra of the Eu(3+) and Tb(3+) complexes displayed characteristic narrow bands arising from intraconfigurational transitions of trivalent rare-earth ions and exhibited red color emission for the Eu(3+) ion ((5)D(0) -> F(J), J=0-6) and green for the Tb(3+) ion ((5)D(4) -> (7)F(J), J = 6-0). The lack of the broaden emission bands arising from the ligands suggests the efficient intramolecular energy transfer from the dbm and acac ligands to Eu(3+) and Tb(3+) ions, respectively. In accordance to the expected, the values of PL quantum efficiency (eta) of the emitting (5)D(0) state of the tetrakis(beta-diketonate) complexes of Eu(3+) were higher compared with those tris-complexes. Therefore, organic electroluminescent (EL) devices were fabricated with the structure as follows: indium tin oxide (ITO)/hole transport layer (HTL) NPB or MTCD/emitter layer M[RE(beta-diketonate)(4)] complexes)/Aluminum (Al). All the films were deposited by thermal evaporation carried out in a high vacuum environment system. The OLED light emission was independent of driving voltage, indicating that the combination of charge carriers generates excitons within the M[RE(beta-diketonate)(4)] layers, and the energy is efficiently transferred to RE(3+) ion. As a best result, a pure red and green electroluminescent emission was observed from the Eu(3+) and Tb(3+) devices, confirmed by (X,Y) color coordinates. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Copper hexacyanoferrate nanoparticles of about 30 nm in size have been prepared by the sonochemical irradiation of a mixture of aqueous potassium ferricyanide and copper chloride solutions. The nanoparticles were immobilized onto fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) electrodes by using the electrostatic deposition layer-by-layer technique (LbL), obtaining electroactive films with electrocatalytic properties towards H2O2 reduction, providing higher currents than those observed for electrodeposited bulk material, even in electrolytes containing NH4+, Na+ and K+. The nanoparticles assembly was used as mediator in a glucose biosensor by immobilizing glucose oxidase enzyme by both, cross-linking and LbL. techniques. Sensitivities obtained were dependent on the immobilization method ranging from 1.23 mu A mmol(-1) L cm(-2) for crosslinking to 0.47 mu A mmol(-1) L cm(-2) for LbL; these values being of the same order than those obtained with electrodes where the amount of enzyme used is much higher. Moreover, the linear concentration range where the biosensors can operate was 10 times higher for electrodes prepared with the LbL immobilization method than with the conventional crosslinking one. A systematic and comprehensive study of the interaction of citrate-stabilized gold nanoparticles with triruthenium cluster complexes of general formula [Ru(3)(CH(3)COO)(6)(L)](+) [L = 4-cyanopyridine (4-CNpy), 4,4`-bipyridine (4,4`-bpy) or 4,4`-bis(pyridyl)ethylene (bpe)] has been carried out. The cluster-nanoparticle interaction in solution and the construction of thin films of the hybrid materials were investigated in detail by electronic and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) spectroscopy, Raman scattering spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Citrate-stabilized gold nanoparticles readily interacted with [Ru(3)O(CH(3)COO)(6)(L)(3)](+) complexes to generate functionalized nanoparticles that tend to aggregate according to rates and extents that depend on the bond strength defined by the characteristics of the cluster L ligands following the sequence bpe > 4,4`-bpy >> 4-CNpy. The formation of compact thin films of hybrid AuNP/[Ru(3)O(CH(3)COO)(6)(L)(3)](+) derivatives with L = bpe and 4,4`-bpy indicated that the stability/lability of AuNP-cluster bonds as well as their solubility are important parameters that influence the film contruction process. Fluorine-doped tin oxide electrodes modified with thin films of these nanomaterials exhibited similar electrocatalytic activity but much higher sensitivity than a conventional gold electrode in the oxidation of nitrite ion to nitrate depending on the bridging cluster complex, demonstrating the high potential for the development of amperometric sensors.

Semiconducting films of (n-type) ZnSe and (p-type) nitrogen-doped ZnSe were electrodeposited by a linear-sweep voltammetric technique on to a substrate of fluorine-tin oxide (FM) glass ceramics. The films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis and grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction. The results indicated that the material was deposited uniformly over the substrate, forming clusters when the Zn content of the bath was 0.1 mol L(-1) and a film when it was 0.2 or 0.3 mol L(-1). The effectiveness of doping the films with nitrogen by adding ammonium sulfate to the deposition solution was assessed by measuring the film-electrolyte interface capacitance (C) at various applied potentials (E(ap)) and plotting Mott-Schottky curves (C(-2) vs E(ap)), whose slope sign was used to identify p-type ZnSe. Proton-conducting gel polymer electrolytes based on gelatin plasticized with glycerol and containing acetic acid were investigated, characterized, and applied to electrochromic window. For glycerol contents varying from 7% to 48%, the conductivity of the uniform and predominantly amorphous gel electrolyte was found to follow a Vogel-Tamman-Fulcher behavior with the temperature. Typically, for the electrolyte chosen to make 7 x 2 cm(2) electrochromic smart window with the configuration: glass/fluor-doped tin oxide (FTO)/WO(3)/gelatin electrolyte/CeO(2)-TiO(2)/FTO/glass and containing 28% of glycerol, the conductivities were found to be of the order of 5 x 10(-5) S/cm at room temperature and 3.6 x 10(-4) S/cm at 80 A degrees C. The device was characterized by spectroelectrochemical techniques and was tested up to 10,000 cycles showing a fast coloring/bleaching behavior, where the coloring process was achieved in 10 s and the bleaching in 2 s. The transmission variation at the wavelength of 550 nm was about 15%. The cyclic voltammograms showed a very good reversibility of the cathodic/anodic processes, and the charge density was about 3.5 mC/cm(2). The memory tests showed that the transmittance in the colored state increased by 8% in 90 min after removing the potential.
