The effects of aluminum on plasma ion, lipid, protein and steroid hormone concentration were evaluated in Oreochromis niloticus broodstock females. Lipid and protein concentrations from the gonads and liver were also measured Experiments were performed at neutral and acidic water pH Four groups of fish were tested for 96 h. 1) control conditions at neutral water pH, 2) control conditions at acidic water pH (CTR-Ac). 3) aluminum at neutral water pH (Al-N), and 4) aluminum at acidic water pH (Al-Ac) Aluminum and acidic water pH exposure caused no ionoregulatory disturbances Total lipid concentration increased in the mature gonads and decreased in the liver, suggesting an acceleration of lipid mobilization to the ovaries in animals exposed to aluminum However, a decreased protein concentration in ovaries was also observed Exposure of control fish to acidic water pH caused an increased concentration of plasma 17 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone However, females exposed to aluminum at acidic water pH showed a decreased of plasma 17 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone and cortisol. No differences in plasma 17 beta-estradiol were observed The physiological mechanisms underlying the disturbances observed are discussed focusing on reproduction We suggest that aluminum can be considered an endocrine disrupting compound in mature O. mloticus females (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of glycerol contents on physical properties of cassava starch films. The films were prepared from film-forming solutions (FFS) with 2g cassava starch/100g water and 0, 15, 30 and 45g glycerol/100g starch, and were analysed to determine its mechanical properties by tensile tests, the glass-transition temperature (T-g) by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and the crystallinity by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The infrared spectra of the films were also recorded. The resistance values of the films decreased, while those of the elasticity increased with an increase in glycerol concentration due to the plasticizer effect of glycerol, which was also observed in DSC curves. The T-g of the films prepared decreased with the glycerol content. However, for samples with 30 and 45g glycerol/100g starch, two T-g curves were observed, probably due to a phase separation phenomenon. According to the XRD diffractograms, the films with 0 and 15gglycerol/100g starch presented an amorphous character, but some tendency to show crystalline peaks were observed for films with 30 and 45g glycerol/100g starch. The results obtained with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) corroborated these observations. Copyright (C) 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Copper sulfate is widely used in aquaculture. Exposure to this compound can be harmful to fish, resulting in oxidative metabolism alterations and gill tissue damage. Pacu, Piaractus mesopotamicus, (wt = 43.4 +/- A 3.35 g) were distributed in experimental tanks (n = 10; 180 l) and exposed for 48 h to control (without copper addition), 0.4Cu (0.4 mg l(-1)), 0CupH (without copper addition, pH = 5.0) and 0.4CupH (0.4 mg l(-1), pH = 5.0). In liver and red muscle, the superoxide dismutase (SOD) was responsive to the increases in the aquatic copper. The plasmatic intermediary metabolites and hematological variables in the fish of group 0.4Cu were similar to those of the control group. Conversely, the exposure to 0.4CupH caused an increase in the plasmatic lactate, number of red blood cells (RBC) and hemoglobin (Hb). Plasmatic copper concentration [Cu(p)] increased in group 0.4Cu and 0.4CupH, which is higher in group 0.4CupH, suggests an effect of water pH on the absorbed copper. Exposure to 0.4Cu and 0.4CupH resulted in a reduction in the Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase activity and an increase in metallothionein (MT) in the gills. Exposure to 0CupH caused a decrease in glucose and pyruvate concentrations and an increase in RBC, Hb, and the branchial Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase activity. These responses suggest that the fish triggered mechanisms to revert the blood acidosis, save energy and increase the oxygen uptake. MT was an effective biomarker, responding to copper in different pHs and dissolved oxygen. Combined-factors caused more significant disturbance in the biomarkers than single-factors.
