Maternal investment in egg production: environmental and population-specific effects on offspring performance in the snapping shrimp Alpheus nuttingi (Schmitt, 1924) (Decapoda, Alpheidae)

Among marine invertebrates, the overall biomass invested in egg production varies widely within populations, which can result from the interaction of endogenous and exogenous factors. Species that have constant reproduction throughout the year can be good models to study the influence of environmental factors on reproductive processes. We conducted a seasonal comparison of egg production in the intertidal snapping shrimp Alpheus nuttingi, which shows a continuous reproductive pattern, to examine the hypothesis that differences in egg production are driven by environmental conditions and population features. This population showed an uncommon strategy, characterized by females that produce eggs of varying sizes within their clutches, with reduced egg volume when the number of eggs is higher (Spring-Summer). In these seasons, higher temperatures and greater food availability may allow the production of more eggs compared to the Autumn-Winter seasons. Compared to other alpheid shrimps, this population produces small eggs, but in larger numbers. Despite the higher fecundity, the reproductive output is relatively low, this production being supported by the large size of females from the southern Atlantic region. Our findings showed that the egg production of A. nuttingi was greatly influenced by environmental factors. Cinco novas espécies de Cerambycidae (Insecta: Coleoptera) da Região Neotropical e novos registros

New species are described: Tessaropa elongata sp. nov. from Brazil (Rondônia) has long elytra, a character that distinguishes it from the remaining species with short elytra; Hexoplon immaculatum sp. nov. from Ecuador (Pichincha) is characterized by the red-orange general color and black legs. Eburodacrys inaequalis sp. nov. from Bolivia (Santa Cruz) has elytral apices and same-color femora that cause it to be similar to E. ayri Martins & Galileo, 2006 and E. silviamariae Martins & Galileo, 2006, yet it differs from either species in the black lateral spines and dorsal tubercles of pronotum and the elongate eburneuos maculae of the elytra. Coleomethia bezarki sp. nov. (Costa Rica, Guanacaste) differs from C. australis Hovore, 1987 by male pronotum without rugosities, peduculate metafemora and metatibiae entirely pubescent. Bisaltes (B.) petilus sp. nov. (Costa Rica, Guanacaste, Alajuela) is separated from B. (B.)buquetii Thomson, 1868 and B. (B.) fuchsi Breuning, 1971 by the more slender body appearance, the absence of dark belts on pronotum, and the absence of circular macula in the anterior third of elytra. Notes and new records are provided for: Tetraibion concolor Martins, 2006 (Bolivia: La Paz); Gnomidolon ornaticolle Martins, 1960 (Panama: Colón); Mephritus apicatus (Linsley, 1935) (Brazil: Rondônia).

Contribuição para o estudo dos Rhinotragini (Coleoptera, Cerambycidae). III: Oxyommata Zajciw, 1970 e novo gênero oriundo da divisão de Xenocrasis Bates, 1873

Oxyommata Zajciw, 1970 e O. collaris (Audinet-Serville, 1833) são redescritos e comentados. Um novo gênero proveniente da divisão de Xenocrasis Bates, 1873 é descrito e três espécies alocadas nele: X. fulvicollis(Lacordaire, 1868); X. pubipennis (Fisher, 1952); e X. vestitipennis Zajciw, 1963. É apresentada chave para as espécies do novo gênero.

Onciderini (Coleoptera, Cerambycidae, Lamiinae): notas, descrições, novas combinações e chave para grupo de espécies de Trachysomus

Considera-se Charoides Dillon & Dillon, 1945 sinônimo de Tulcus Dillon & Dillon, 1945 e todas as espécies arroladas em Charoides são transferidas para Tulcus como novas combinações. Novas espécies descritas da Bolívia: Tulcus diaphorus sp. nov., Hesychotypa balia sp. nov., Proplerodia piriana sp. nov. and Trachysomus clarkei sp. nov. Novas espécies descritas do Brasil: Bucoides montana sp. nov. (Minas Gerais); Tulcoides tibialis sp. nov., (procedência desconhecida); Oncideres immensa sp. nov. (Pará); Oncideres errata sp. nov. (Bahia a Santa Catarina, Goiás). Trachysomus wappesi sp. nov. é descrita de Trinidad y Tobago. Oncideres fabricii Thomson, 1868 é considereda sinônima de O. cephalotes Bates, 1865. Acrescenta-se chave para espécies castanhas ou pretas de Trachysomus.

Isolamento compulsório de portadores de hanseníase: memória de idosos

De 1924 a 1962 o Brasil utilizou a internação compulsória de pacientes de hanseníase como controle da doença na comunidade. Com o final dessa política, muitos pacientes continuaram a viver nessas unidades. O Asilo Pirapitingui, hoje Hospital Dr. Francisco Ribeiro Arantes, é a única retaguarda asilar para internação de portadores de hanseníase por indicação social. Obtivemos o relato da história de vida de oito de seus remanescentes, que foram gravados e transcritos. A análise temática desses relatos permitiu a identificação das seguintes categorias: hanseníase; internação; vida cotidiana; a instituição; condições atuais de saúde; e permanência na instituição após a extinção da internação compulsória.

INTERPOPULATION COMPARISON OF REPRODUCTION OF THE ATLANTIC SHRIMP HIPPOLYTE OBLIQUIMANUS (CARIDEA: HIPPOLYTIDAE)

The genus Hippolyte is represented by typically small shrimps with intriguing mechanisms of reproduction. In order to study possible variability in reproductive aspects among different populations, we conducted an exhaustive comparative study of H. obliquimanus from South (Brazil) and Central American (Costa Rica) waters. The study focuses on fecundity and reproductive output. Mean size of ovigerous females was significantly larger, and both mean reproductive output and mean fecundity were significantly higher in specimens from Costa Rica then in those collected in Brazil. Embryo volume was significantly smaller in the Costa Rican population, and in both populations embryos doubled their volume during embryogenesis. We discuss and compare our findings with the information available regarding H. obliquimanus and other hippolytid shrimp. The reproductive traits of both populations of H. obliquimanus show some important differences which may reflect adaptations to local environmental conditions, demonstrating a high plasticity of reproductive features of the species in Brazilian and Costa Rican waters.

A Brief History of the Research and Its Ideas

This article is an introduction to the special issue of Sexuality Research & Social Policy, where we share some of the research of our project, ""Relations among 'race,' sexuality and gender in different local and national contexts."" The goal of this project was to develop broad comparative research on race, sexuality, and gender in Brazil, South Africa, and the USA. New signs of identity and contestation were noted during our research. Given the numerous and important changes which are currently in progress in these interlinked fields, we identified important connections between transformations in the symbolic order and social gains, which cannot necessarily be converted into more widespread decreases in social inequality or which can break apart forms of hierarchization and exclusion. The results of our studies in South Africa and Brazil are the focus of this special issue, given that these two contexts are less well known by the American public.
