Objective To assess trends in the prevalence and social distribution of child stunting in Brazil to evaluate the effect of income and basic service redistribution policies implemented in that country in the recent past. Methods The prevalence of stunting (height-for-age z score below 2 using the Child Growth Standards of the World Health Organization) among children aged less than 5 years was estimated from data collected during national household surveys carried out in Brazil in 1974-75 (n = 34 409), 1989 (n = 7374), 1996 (n = 4149) and 2006-07 (n = 4414). Absolute and relative socioeconomic inequality in stunting was measured by means of the slope index and the concentration index of inequality, respectively. Findings Over a 33-year period, we documented a steady decline in the national prevalence of stunting from 37.1% to 7.1%. Prevalence dropped from 59.0% to 11.2% in the poorest quintile and from 12.1% to 3.3% among the wealthiest quintile. The decline was particularly steep in the last 10 years of the period (1996 to 2007), when the gaps between poor and wealthy families with children under 5 were also reduced in terms of purchasing power; access to education, health care and water and sanitation services; and reproductive health indicators. Conclusion In Brazil, socioeconomic development coupled with equity-oriented public policies have been accompanied by marked improvements in living conditions and a substantial decline in child undernutrition, as well as a reduction of the gap in nutritional status between children in the highest and lowest socioeconomic quintiles. Future studies will show whether these gains will be maintained under the current global economic crisis.

Receiver functions from small local earthquakes were used to determine sediment thicknesses in Porto dos Gauchos seismic zone (PGSZ), Parecis basin, Amazonian craton, Brazil. The high velocity contrast between basement and sediments (P-wave velocities of 6.1 and 3.0 km/s, respectively) favors the generation of clear P-to-S converted phases (Ps) seen in the radial component, and also S-to-P conversions (Sp) seen in the vertical component. A reference 10 velocity model determined with shallow refraction experiment in PGSZ helped to convert Ps P time differences to basement depths at 15 stations deployed for aftershocks studies. The results of receiver function integrated with the shallow refraction reveal that the basement depths in the PGSZ increases from the basin border in the north up to about 600 m depth in the south. The basement topography, however, does not vary smoothly and a basement high with a steep topography was detected near the epicentral area. A 400 m elevation difference within 1.7 km distance suggests a possible border fault of a buried graben. This feature seems to be oriented roughly WSW-ENE and could indicate basement structures related to the seismicity of the Porto dos Gauchos Seismic Zone. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This work reports on magnetic measurements of the quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) system Zn(1-x)Mn(x)In(2)Se(4), with 0.01 <= x <= 1.00. For x > 0.67, the quasi-2D system seems to develop a spin-glass behaviour. Evidence of a true phase transition phenomenon is provided by the steep increase of the nonlinear susceptibility chi(nl) when approaching T(C) from above. The static scaling of chi(nl) data yields critical exponents delta = 4.0 +/- 0.2, phi = 4.37 +/- 0.17 and TC = 3.4 +/- 0.1 K for the sample with x = 1.00 and similar values for the sample with x = 0.87. These critical exponents are in good agreement with values reported for other spin-glass systems with short-range interactions.

Axelrod`s model for culture dissemination offers a nontrivial answer to the question of why there is cultural diversity given that people`s beliefs have a tendency to become more similar to each other`s as they interact repeatedly. The answer depends on the two control parameters of the model, namely, the number F of cultural features that characterize each agent, and the number q of traits that each feature can take on, as well as on the size A of the territory or, equivalently, on the number of interacting agents. Here, we investigate the dependence of the number C of distinct coexisting cultures on the area A in Axelrod`s model, the culture-area relationship, through extensive Monte Carlo simulations. We find a non-monotonous culture-area relation, for which the number of cultures decreases when the area grows beyond a certain size, provided that q is smaller than a threshold value q (c) = q (c) (F) and F a parts per thousand yen 3. In the limit of infinite area, this threshold value signals the onset of a discontinuous transition between a globalized regime marked by a uniform culture (C = 1), and a completely polarized regime where all C = q (F) possible cultures coexist. Otherwise, the culture-area relation exhibits the typical behavior of the species-area relation, i.e., a monotonically increasing curve the slope of which is steep at first and steadily levels off at some maximum diversity value.

The various stages of the interaction between the detergent Triton X-100 (TTX-100) and membranes of whole red blood cells (RBC) were investigated in a broad range of detergent concentrations. The interaction was monitored by RBC hemolysis-assessed by release of intracellular hemoglobin (Hb) and inorganic phosphate- and by analysis of EPR spectra of a fatty acid spin probe intercalated in whole RBC suspensions, as well as pellets and supernatants obtained upon centrifugation of detergent-treated cells. Hemolysis finished at ca. 0.9 mM TTX-100. Spectral analysis and calculation of order parameters (S) indicated that a complex sequence of events takes place, and allowed the characterization of various structures formed in the different stages of detergent-membrane interaction. Upon reaching the end of cell lysis, essentially no pellet was detected, the remaining EPR signal being found almost entirely in the supernatants. Calculated order parameters revealed that whole RBC suspensions, pellets, and supernatants possessed a similar degree of molecular packing, which decreased to a small extent up to 2.5 mM detergent. Between 3.2 and 10 mM TTX-100, a steep decrease in S was observed for both whole RBC suspensions and supernatants. Above 10 mM detergent, S decreased in a less pronounced manner and the EPR spectra approached that of pure TTX-100 micelles. The data were interpreted in terms of the following events: at the lower detergent concentrations, an increase in membrane permeability occurs: the end of hemolysis coincides with the lack of pellet upon centrifugation. Up to 2.5 mM TTX-100 the supernatants consist of a (very likely) heterogeneous population of membrane fragments with molecular packing similar to that of whole cells. As the detergent concentration increases, mixed micelles are formed containing lipid and/or protein, approaching the packing found in pure TTX-100 micelles. This analysis is in agreement with the models proposed by Lasch (Biochim. Biophys Acta 1241 (1995) 269-292) and by Le Maire and coworkers (Biochim. Biophys. Acta 1508 (2000) 86-111). We report in this work the study of the interaction between formic acid and an oxidized platinum surface under open circuit conditions. The investigation was carried out with the aid of in situ infrared spectroscopy, and results analyzed in terms of a mathematical model and numerical simulations. It has been found that during the first seconds of the interaction a small amount of CO(2) is produced and absolutely no adsorbed CO was observed. A sudden drop in potential then follows, which is accompanied by a steep increase first of CO(2) production and then by adsorbed CO. The steep transient was rationalized in terms of an autocatalytic production of free platinum sites which enhances the overall rate of reaction. Modeling and simulation showed nearly quantitative agreement with the experimental observations and provided further insight into some experimentally inaccessible variables such as surface free sites. Finally, based on the understanding provided from the combined experimental and theoretical approach, we discuss the general aspects influencing the open circuit transient.
