We present a rigorous, regularization-independent local quantum field theoretic treatment of the Casimir effect for a quantum scalar field of mass mu not equal 0 which yields closed form expressions for the energy density and pressure. As an application we show that there exist special states of the quantum field in which the expectation value of the renormalized energy-momentum tensor is, for any fixed time, independent of the space coordinate and of the perfect fluid form g(mu,nu)rho with rho > 0, thus providing a concrete quantum field theoretic model of the cosmological constant. This rho represents the energy density associated to a state consisting of the vacuum and a certain number of excitations of zero momentum, i.e., the constituents correspond to lowest energy and pressure p <= 0. Path-integral representations for a scalar particle propagator in non-Abelian external backgrounds are derived. To this aim, we generalize the procedure proposed by Gitman and Schvartsman of path-integral construction to any representation of SU(N) given in terms of antisymmetric generators. And for arbitrary representations of SU(N), we present an alternative construction by means of fermionic coherent states. From the path-integral representations we derive pseudoclassical actions for a scalar particle placed in non-Abelian backgrounds. These actions are classically analyzed and then quantized to prove their consistency.

The scalar-isoscalar term in the two-pion exchange NN potential is abnormally large and does not respect the hierarchy of effects predicted by chiral perturbation theory. We argue that this anomaly is associated with non-perturbative effects, which are also present in the pi N scalar form factor.

In this paper we give a partially affirmative answer to the following question posed by Haizhong Li: is a complete spacelike hypersurface in De Sitter space S(1)(n+1)(c), n >= 3, with constant normalized scalar curvature R satisfying n-2/nc <= R <= c totally umbilical? A new inflationary scenario whose exponential potential V (Phi) has a quadratic dependence on the field Phi in addition to the standard linear term is confronted with the five-year observations of the Wilkinson-Microwave Anisotropy Probe and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data. The number of e-folds (N), the ratio of tensor-to-scalar perturbations (r), the spectral scalar index of the primordial power spectrum (n(s)) and its running (dn(s)/d ln k) depend on the dimensionless parameter a multiplying the quadratic term in the potential. In the limit a. 0 all the results of the exponential potential are fully recovered. For values of alpha not equal 0, we find that the model predictions are in good agreement with the current observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies and Large-Scale Structure (LSS) in the Universe. The problem of cosmological particle creation for a spatially flat, homogeneous and isotropic universes is discussed in the context of f (R) theories of gravity. Different from cosmological models based on general relativity theory, it is found that a conformal invariant metric does not forbid the creation of massless particles during the early stages (radiation era) of the universe. We propose a new class of accelerating world models unifying the cosmological dark sector (dark matter and dark energy). All the models are described by a simplified version of the Chaplygin gas quartessence cosmology. It is found that even for Omega(k) not equal 0, this quartessence scenario depends only on a pair of parameters which can severely be constrained by the cosmological tests. As an example we perform a joint analysis involving the latest SNe type la data and the recent Sloan Digital Sky Survey measurement of baryon acoustic oscillations. In our analysis we have considered the SNe type la Union sample compiled by Kowalski et al. [M. Kowalski et al., Astrophys. J. 686 (2008) 749, arXiv:0804.4142]. At 95.4% (c.l.), we find for BAD + Union sample, alpha = 0.81(-0.04)(+0.04) and Omega(Q4) = 1.15(-0.17)(+0.16) The best-fit for this simplified quartessence scenario is a spatially closed Universe and its reduced chi(2) is exactly the same of the flat concordance model (Lambda CDM). The degree to which habitat fragmentation affects bird incidence is species specific and may depend on varying spatial scales. Selecting the correct scale of measurement is essential to appropriately assess the effects of habitat fragmentation on bird occurrence. Our objective was to determine which spatial scale of landscape measurement best describes the incidence of three bird species (Pyriglena leucoptera, Xiphorhynchus fuscus and Chiroxiphia caudata) in the fragmented Brazilian Atlantic forest and test if multi-scalar models perform better than single-scalar ones. Bird incidence was assessed in 80 forest fragments. The surrounding landscape structure was described with four indices measured at four spatial scales (400-, 600-, 800- and 1,000-m buffers around the sample points). The explanatory power of each scale in predicting bird incidence was assessed using logistic regression, bootstrapped with 1,000 repetitions. The best results varied between species (1,000-m radius for P. leucoptera; 800-m for X. fuscus and 600-m for C. caudata), probably due to their distinct feeding habits and foraging strategies. Multi-scale models always resulted in better predictions than single-scale models, suggesting that different aspects of the landscape structure are related to different ecological processes influencing bird incidence. In particular, our results suggest that local extinction and (re)colonisation processes might simultaneously act at different scales. Thus, single-scale models may not be good enough to properly describe complex pattern-process relationships. Selecting variables at multiple ecologically relevant scales is a reasonable procedure to optimise the accuracy of species incidence models.

In tetrapod squamates, the diversity of micro-ornamentations of the epidermis of the contact areas of hands and feet is generally associated with constraints and modalities related to locomotion. Polychrus acutirostris is a medium-sized lizard that occurs in open heterogeneous habitats in South America, such as the cerrados, caatingas, and fallow lands. It progresses slowly on branches of various diameters in its arboreal environment. It can also move more rapidly on the ground. The hands and feet are prehensile and may be considered an adaptation for grasping and climbing. Epidermal surfaces from the palmar and plantar areas of the hands and feet of P. acutirostris were prepared for SEM examination, and studied at various magnifications. They show three major levels of complexity: (1) scale types, organized in gradients of size and imbrication, (2) scalar ornamentations, organized by increasing complexity and polarity, and (3) presence of Oberhautchen showing typically iguanian honeycomb micro-ornamentations. The shape and surface structure of the scales with their pattern of micro-ornamental peaks, which improve grip, and the grasping hands and feet indicate that P. acutirostris is morpho-functionally specialized for arboreality. Predictive performance evaluation is a fundamental issue in design, development, and deployment of classification systems. As predictive performance evaluation is a multidimensional problem, single scalar summaries such as error rate, although quite convenient due to its simplicity, can seldom evaluate all the aspects that a complete and reliable evaluation must consider. Due to this, various graphical performance evaluation methods are increasingly drawing the attention of machine learning, data mining, and pattern recognition communities. The main advantage of these types of methods resides in their ability to depict the trade-offs between evaluation aspects in a multidimensional space rather than reducing these aspects to an arbitrarily chosen (and often biased) single scalar measure. Furthermore, to appropriately select a suitable graphical method for a given task, it is crucial to identify its strengths and weaknesses. This paper surveys various graphical methods often used for predictive performance evaluation. By presenting these methods in the same framework, we hope this paper may shed some light on deciding which methods are more suitable to use in different situations.

In this paper we establish the existence of standing wave solutions for quasilinear Schrodinger equations involving critical growth. By using a change of variables, the quasilinear equations are reduced to semilinear one. whose associated functionals are well defined in the usual Sobolev space and satisfy the geometric conditions of the mountain pass theorem. Using this fact, we obtain a Cerami sequence converging weakly to a solution v. In the proof that v is nontrivial, the main tool is the concentration-compactness principle due to P.L. This study investigates the numerical simulation of three-dimensional time-dependent viscoelastic free surface flows using the Upper-Convected Maxwell (UCM) constitutive equation and an algebraic explicit model. This investigation was carried out to develop a simplified approach that can be applied to the extrudate swell problem. The relevant physics of this flow phenomenon is discussed in the paper and an algebraic model to predict the extrudate swell problem is presented. It is based on an explicit algebraic representation of the non-Newtonian extra-stress through a kinematic tensor formed with the scaled dyadic product of the velocity field. The elasticity of the fluid is governed by a single transport equation for a scalar quantity which has dimension of strain rate. Mass and momentum conservations, and the constitutive equation (UCM and algebraic model) were solved by a three-dimensional time-dependent finite difference method. The free surface of the fluid was modeled using a marker-and-cell approach. The algebraic model was validated by comparing the numerical predictions with analytic solutions for pipe flow. In comparison with the classical UCM model, one advantage of this approach is that computational workload is substantially reduced: the UCM model employs six differential equations while the algebraic model uses only one. The results showed stable flows with very large extrudate growths beyond those usually obtained with standard differential viscoelastic models. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We use the QCD sum rules to evaluate the mass of a possible scalar mesonic state that couples to a molecular D(s)*(D) over bar (s)* current. We find a mass m(Ds)*(Ds)* = (4.14 +/- 0.09) GeV, which is in an excellent agreement with the recently observed Y(4140) charmonium state. We consider the contributions of condensates up to dimension-eight, we work at leading order in alpha(s) and we keep terms which are linear in the strange quark mass m(s). We also consider a molecular D*(D) over bar* current and we obtain m m(D)*(D)* = (4.13 +/- 0.10), around 200 MeV above the mass of the Y(3930) charmonium state. We conclude that it is possible to describe the Y(4140) structure as a D(s)*(D) over bar (s)* molecular state or even as a mixture of D(s)*(D) over bar (s)* and D*(D) over bar* molecular states. We study the duality of the supersymmetric self-dual and Maxwell-Chern-Simons theories coupled to a fermionic matter superfield, using a master action. This approach evades the difficulties inherent to the quartic couplings that appear when matter is represented by a scalar superfield. The price is that the spinorial matter superfield represents a unusual supersymmetric multiplet, whose main physical properties we also discuss. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A new approach to constructing coherent states (CS) and semiclassical states (SS) in a magnetic-solenoid field is proposed. The main idea is based on the fact that the AB solenoid breaks the translational symmetry in the xy-plane; this has a topological effect such that there appear two types of trajectories which embrace and do not embrace the solenoid. Due to this fact, one has to construct two different kinds of CS/SS which correspond to such trajectories in the semiclassical limit. Following this idea, we construct CS in two steps, first the instantaneous CS (ICS) and then the time-dependent CS/SS as an evolution of the ICS. The construction is realized for nonrelativistic and relativistic spinning particles both in (2 + 1) and (3 + 1) dimensions and gives a non-trivial example of SS/CS for systems with a nonquadratic Hamiltonian. It is stressed that CS depending on their parameters (quantum numbers) describe both pure quantum and semiclassical states. An analysis is represented that classifies parameters of the CS in such respect. Such a classification is used for the semiclassical decompositions of various physical quantities.
