This cross-sectional study determined the influence of antiretroviral therapy (ART) on the lipid profile and insulin sensitivity of 119 perinatally HIV-infected Brazilian patients aged 6-19 years. Inadequate high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) concentrations were observed in 81.4% of patients. High concentrations of total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDI.-c) and triglycerides (TG) were found in 33.9%, 9.7% and 35.6% of patients, respectively. There were statistically significant differences in mean concentrations of TC (P=0.004), HDL-c (P=0.015) and LDL-c (P=0.028) among children (< 10 years), early adolescents (10-14 years) and late adolescents (15-19 years). Children presented the highest mean concentrations of TC and LDL-c, and patients in late adolescence presented the lowest concentrations of HDL-c. Insulin sensitivity, assessed by the Homeostasis Model Assessment (HOMA) index, was diagnosed in 16.7% of patients, with a statistically higher proportion (P=0.034) of insulin-resistant children (33.3%) compared with adolescents (12.5%). There was a statistically significant association between TG concentrations and use of ART regimens containing protease inhibitors (PI) (P=0.0003). Children presented a higher prevalence of insulin resistance and dyslipidaemia compared with adolescents, suggesting that ART, especially Pls, may lead to metabolic complications. The objective of this cross-sectional study was to assess the nutritional status of children and adolescents with human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). One hundred and eighteen subjects aged 6-19 years attending an outpatient clinic in Sao Paulo city were involved in the study. The following anthropometric measurements were assessed: weight, height, waist circumference and triceps and subscapular skinfold thickness. One (0.9%) adolescent was diagnosed with abdominal obesity based on waist circumference measurement; three (2.5%) adolescents were obese based on subscapular skinfold thickness. According to the body mass index, the population studied was mainly eutrophic. The prevalence of fat redistribution, a characteristic of patients with HIV/AIDS under HAART, was low. We advise the development of further studies to assess the nutritional status of children and adolescents with HIV/AIDS using anthropometric measurements as well as computed tomography to detect fat redistribution.

Previous studies found students who both work and attend school undergo a partial sleep deprivation that accumulates across the week. The aim of the present study was to obtain information using a questionnaire on a number of variables (e.g., socio-demographics, lifestyle, work timing, and sleep-wake habits) considered to impact on sleep duration of working (n = 51) and non-working (n = 41) high-school students aged 14-21 yrs old attending evening classes (19:00-22:30h) at a public school in the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Data were collected for working days and days off. Multiple linear regression analyses were performed to assess the factors associated with sleep duration on weekdays and weekends. Work, sex, age, smoking, consumption of alcohol and caffeine, and physical activity were considered control variables. Significant predictors of sleep duration were: work (p < 0.01), daily work duration (8-10h/day; p < 0.01), sex (p = 0.04), age 18-21 yrs (0.01), smoking (p = 0.02) and drinking habits (p = 0.03), irregular physical exercise (p < 0.01), ease of falling asleep (p = 0.04), and the sleep-wake cycle variables of napping (p < 0.01), nocturnal awakenings (p < 0.01), and mid-sleep regularity (p < 0.01). The results confirm the hypotheses that young students who work and attend school showed a reduction in night-time sleep duration. Sleep deprivation across the week, particularly in students working 8-10h/day, is manifested through a sleep rebound (i.e., extended sleep duration) on Saturdays. However, the different roles played by socio-demographic and lifestyle variables have proven to be factors that intervene with nocturnal sleep duration. The variables related to the sleep-wake cyclenaps and night awakeningsproved to be associated with a slight reduction in night-time sleep, while regularity in sleep and wake-up schedules was shown to be associated with more extended sleep duration, with a distinct expression along the week and the weekend. Having to attend school and work, coupled with other socio-demographic and lifestyle factors, creates an unfavorable scenario for satisfactory sleep duration.

Background: We evaluated the outcome of newborns admitted in the neonatal Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in Diadema, Brazil. Methods: We evaluated 72 newborns, data were extracted from research forms, newborns` hospital records, mothers interviews, domiciliary inquiry made with the responsible for the newborn care, and paediatric accompaniment cards. Results: 48.93% presented low birth weight, 48% were considered to have normal birth weight and 2% had a birth weight higher than 4000g. Concerning gestational age, 57.44% were younger than 37 weeks old. During hospitalisation, newborn had appointments with doctors from other specialties (inter-appointments), around 40% were cardiologists. After hospital discharge 82.98% were referred to local primary health care units, and the main specialities were cardiology and neurology. Among the newborns evaluated 85.11% were accompanied by paediatric health care units. Conclusion: The implementation of a specialised newborn health accompaniment program in Brazil after ICU discharge is important for positive outcomes regarding newborns growth and development.

Aims: To test for an association between rhythmic masticatory muscle activity during sleep, as assessed according to polysomnographic criteria for sleep bruxism (RMMA-SB), and myofascial pain (MFP), as well as the chance of occurrence of MFP in patients with RMMA-SB. Methods: Thirty MFP patients (diagnosed according to the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders) and 30 age- and gender-matcbed asymptomatic controls underwent a polysomnographic examination. Also, any self-reporting of daytime clenching (DC) was registered in 58 of these subjects. Results: Most MFP patients reported mild or moderate pain (46.67% and 43.33%, respectively), and only 3 (10%) reported severe pain. Pain duration ranged from 2 to 120 months (mean 34.67 +/- 36.96 months). Significant associations were observed between RMMA-SB and MFP as well as between DC and MFP. Conclusions: (1) RMMA-SB is significantly associated with MFP; (2) although RMMA-SB represents a risk factor for MFP, this risk is low; and (3) DC probably constitutes a stronger risk factor for MFP than RMMA-SB.
