This paper is concerned with the existence and nonlinear stability of periodic travelling-wave solutions for a nonlinear Schrodinger-type system arising in nonlinear optics. We show the existence of smooth curves of periodic solutions depending on the dnoidal-type functions. We prove stability results by perturbations having the same minimal wavelength, and instability behaviour by perturbations of two or more times the minima period. We also establish global well posedness for our system by using Bourgain`s approach.

We investigate the impact of hydroxyl groups on the properties of C(60)(OH)(n) systems, with n = 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 10, 16, 18, 24, 32 and 36 by means of first-principles density functional theory calculations. A detailed analysis from the local density of states has shown that adsorbed OH groups can induce dangling bonds in specific carbon atoms around the adsorption site. This increases the tendency to form polyhydroxylated fullerenes (fullerenols). The structural stability is analyzed in terms of the calculated formation enthalpy of each species. Also, a careful examination of the electron density of states for different fullerenols shows the possibility of synthesizing single molecules with tunable optical properties.

Glossoscolex paulistus hemoglobin (HbGp) was studied by dynamic light scattering (DLS), optical absorption spectroscopy (UV-VIS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). At pH 7.0, cyanomet-HbGp is very stable, no oligomeric dissociation is observed, while denaturation occurs at 56 degrees C, 4 degrees C higher as compared to oxy-HbGp. The oligomeric dissociation of HbGp occurs simultaneously with some protein aggregation. Kinetic studies for oxy-HbGp using UV-VIS and DES allowed to obtain activation energy (E(a)) values of 278-262 kJ/mol (DES) and 333 kJ/mol (UV-VIS). Complimentary DSC studies indicate that the denaturation is irreversible, giving endotherms strongly dependent upon the heating scan rates, suggesting a kinetically controlled process. Dependence on protein concentration suggests that the two components in the endotherms are due to oligomeric dissociation effect upon denaturation. Activation energies are in the range 200-560 kJ/mol. The mid-point transition temperatures were in the range 50-65 degrees C. Cyanomet-HbGp shows higher mid-point temperatures as well as activation energies, consistent with its higher stability. DSC data are reported for the first time for an extracellular hemoglobin. Optical Properties and Charge-Transfer Excitations in Edge-Functionalized All-Graphene Nanojunctions
Resumo:
We investigate the optical properties of edge-fiinctionalized graphene nanosystems, focusing on the formation of junctions and charge-transfer excitons. We consider a class of graphene structures that combine the main electronic features of graphene with the wide tunability of large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. By investigating prototypical ribbon-like systems, we show that, upon convenient choice of functional groups, low-energy excitations with remarkable charge-transfer character and large oscillator strength are obtained. These properties can be further modulated through an appropriate width variation, thus spanning a wide range in the low-energy region of the UV-vis spectra. Our results are relevant in view of designing all-graphene optoelectronic nanodevices, which take advantage of the versatility of molecular functionalization, together with the stability and the electronic properties of graphene nanostructures.

The use of conjugated polymers in the gas and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) detections represents an advance in the development of the electronic noses. Polythiophenes show good thermal and environmental stability, are easily synthesized and they have been studied as gas and VOCs sensors using different principles or transduction techniques. Among these techniques, optical sensing has been attracted attention, mainly due to its versatility. However, conjugated polymer-based optical sensors are still less studied. This paper describes the use of two poly(3-alkylthiophenes) for VOCs optical detection. The sensing measurements were carried out using visible spectroscopy. Both polymers showed good sensitivity to the VOCs, showing fast and reversible responses with some hysteresis, and were unable to detect hydroxylated samples. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the thickness of polymer films influences the intensity of the optical response. Although there is similarity in the superficial composition of the polymers films, demonstrated by their surface energies, they showed significant differences in their optical properties upon exposure to the VOCs.
